My blog has been changed to make it more appealing for those who have New England ancestors and want to see the area through photos. Things I’ll include are typical white New England churches, libraries showing their genealogical collection, historical societies, cemeteries, war memorials, in general, anything to do with history.

For four years I’ve blogged mostly about my personal genealogy in New England (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire), New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wyoming, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. I still will, can’t forget my own roots.

Please check out the labels on the right side for articles. The header tabs at the top are a work in progress.

Follow Friday -- I Don't Want to Follow Them

Why I ever decided to subscribe to World Vital Records, I wish I knew.  It was just about a year ago, and I assumed I would use it along with several other subscriptions for aiding in my genealogy research.  I've nothing against the company, it was just that blogging got in the way.  My research time was cut way back.

Last week, I received a call from the company, and was asked if I wanted to renew.  When I replied, "no" that is when I was asked a number of questions.  I held my breath and even offered the bit of information, I hoped was true. I said, I hadn't used it in almost a year.  Well, I was right, she had the exact date!  No secrets there. So, with my "no thank you," I think that means a "maybe we can change her mind."  For the past week, I've received the following emails from them.   (I realize the dates don't show below, but they are daily, and two for today.)

Is there anybody who thinks I should reconsider?

My complaint with them was that half of my "findings" were google books. I didn't renew.

I've never even subscribed to them (I think I took advantage of a free research day or something), and I get emails from them constantly. I've tried to remove my name from their mailing list, but somehow it doesn't ever take, which puts them in the spammer category for me.

I just checked my "deleted" file on my email, and I've recieved most of these messages, too, but I'm not even a subscriber! I had access to this website for free once, and I didn't find anything that wasn't available free elsewhere, or on Ancestry.com and other databases I already subscribed. So I never joined.

I am a current subscriber and I received the same emails...I agree - their emails are a too numerous, but the phone calls are worse.

And you'll probably continue to receive this kind of 'spam'...I was in Real Estate for over 20 years and anytime I would even show a little bit of interest in a product, let alone subscribe to it for a year, the calls and e-mails did not end...just got worse. The only thing you can tell them if you call is that you are on the DO NOT Call list and they will be reported if they continue to call. Then report them, if need be. This does not stop the e-mail. I have a special e-mail account set up for these kind of offers.

Absolutely not! I had a 7-day free trial of World Vital Records several months ago. Any search results that it produced merely led me to other sites to which I already had paid subscriptions or were publicly available (SSDI, FindaGrave, etc). For all of their hype and advertising, the site was a huge disappointment and produced no results for me.

I subscribed on a Sunday, so when I attempted to cancel my subscription on the following Saturday, there was no way to do this via the Internet. I had to telephone them during the day, Monday - Friday, to cancel. So - before I was able to cancel within the 7 day period, they had already charged my credit card.

I will give them credit for refunding the charge made to my credit card, but if you're going to have a subscription sign up online, the cancellation should be available online as well.

Wow, what an eye-opener, I had no idea. All the responses should be helpful to anybody who reads this. Thank you to each of you.

I also used the "free days" and have continuously been receiving those e-mails. My experience was similar to some of those described above: there was very little I couldn't get elsewhere for free.

Greta, It is nice to see that we are all in the same boat, that we can't get out of. Thanks for the comment.

I'm in the boat too... *sigh*
