My blog has been changed to make it more appealing for those who have New England ancestors and want to see the area through photos. Things I’ll include are typical white New England churches, libraries showing their genealogical collection, historical societies, cemeteries, war memorials, in general, anything to do with history.

For four years I’ve blogged mostly about my personal genealogy in New England (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire), New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wyoming, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. I still will, can’t forget my own roots.

Please check out the labels on the right side for articles. The header tabs at the top are a work in progress.

Almira was Adopted

Almira Richardson, my 3rd great-grandmother was adopted, between her birth in 1798 and marriage in 1820. Although I don't know anything about her family, there is a marriage record stating Almira was the adopted daughter of JOHN BRYAN. Fortunately, I found quite a bit about her adopted family from a church record, and that is presented below. I'm hoping to find more information to solve this brick wall, for instance; who her parents were, what happened to them and did Almira have siblings. Perhaps somebody from the RICHARDSON or the BRYAN family will provide a clue.

Have you tried looking in the immediate family? I found that two adopted girls in my ancestry were adopted by siblings. Look for a sister or cousin who died young, maybe before Almira was about five years old. In both my cases the father remarried and had more children, but the adopted daughters stayed with their new families until they were both married. This involves doing an indepth genealogy of the extended family, but it might pay off.

I know what you are saying, and have tried everything I can think of. Maybe in a few months, I'll try again. I've known of this for over 15 yrs.

Wow, it seems like finding her birth parents could be really hard. I wish you quick success!

Thanks Nancy. I guess that is what breaking down a brick wall is about. Fun and yet, not so.

This is a long shot, but Almira's middle name might have been her birth name. It was also common for children to be adopted by close relations, so I would also look for anyone living in New Haven Co with the Bryant surname.

Hi Free Genealogy Guide. Thank you for your suggestions. When Almira married, her last name was Richardson, so I don't know her middle name. Also, I've looked high and low for Bryan info. in New Haven. I'm giving $100 to anybody who solves this, it is mentioned under the label "Brick Walls." I appreciate your ideas.
