My blog has been changed to make it more appealing for those who have New England ancestors and want to see the area through photos. Things I’ll include are typical white New England churches, libraries showing their genealogical collection, historical societies, cemeteries, war memorials, in general, anything to do with history.

For four years I’ve blogged mostly about my personal genealogy in New England (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire), New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wyoming, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. I still will, can’t forget my own roots.

Please check out the labels on the right side for articles. The header tabs at the top are a work in progress.

Problems and Surname Saturday

The below genealogy was sent to me recently by a lovely older lady, from Ontario, Canada who contacted me after seeing my tree on Ancestry. Her message to me was, "What more do you want on the Lloyd Harris family?"  She was also smart enough to leave me a message on RootsWeb. Then she sent me three pages of her tree, I'm showing below.

This should have been an easy task; just adding some names and dates into my genealogy data base at where she and I connect. But not so fast. On Monday, I spoke with Dell because I was having problems with my computer, the very next day I received a call from the service tech who arrived at my house within four hours! In a flash, he pulled out my hard drive, and I was in shock.  This is what you don't want to have happen to you. In some ways, I was very lucky because a good deal of my programs and genealogy were backed up and saved, but Not all. and not the one I wanted the most. You've all heard these stories before, so I won't relive my pain. The best thing was I had my GEDCOM on RootsWeb, and on RootsMagic To-Go drive recently backed up. However, my FTM Ver. 6 was lost, and I can't install it on my Vista now. So, between listening to the wonderful RootsTech lectures and reading many tweets and fb postings about the happenings in Salt Lake City, I tried to learn both FTM10 (which I had) and RootsMagic (which I also had, but hadn't learned). Recent webinar lessons in RootsMagic helped, but in the end, FTM10 won out, and I'll stick with that. I haven't blogged in two weeks, but I'm making up for it now.

My connecting lines are in green, and I have no idea why it doesn't line up correctly. Anyway, the below took about four hours of entry time, using the new program!

Argh - why do our computers choose to misbehave at the very times we need them most? Hope every thing gets fixed and recovered.

I am so, so sorry. Boy do I feel your pain. I am all admiration for your fortitude and stiff upper lip. Good New England traits, those. Glad to have you back amongst the blogging.

Thank you Greta and Susan. It isn't an interesting blog, so I really appreciate your comments. New England traits, good thought, but I'd rather be in Virginia! I appreciate your writing.

Oh, boy, I can relate to your story and I'm so sorry you had to live through it, too. I missed your posts. I have a question, I noticed the name CONVERSE. Is there a family connection to the CONVERSE family of Woburn/Charlestown, Massachusetts?

But it *was* an interesting entry.

Because someone found you! Squee for you! All this hard work you have been doing on the 'net has paid off...

And despite your technical difficulties, you got back up and connected your dots...

So, go you!

OK, I know Susan had trouble this year, now Barbara. I need to do some more backups, even though I do have 99% of my stuff on my external hard drive.

We all feel this pain.

I'm so sorry about your hard drive problems. I just received a note yesterday from my computer telling me it was time to back it up. Did I? No, not yet. But I will tomorrow or Monday.

I really like the way you presented this information in your post. I like the organization, the lines, the indentations, etc. And I want to know how you did it. The lines I have down; the indents, yes; but the 2nd and 3rd idents, no. Thanks.

Thank you all for writing, you've lifted my spirits.
Heather: I know nothing of the middle name of Converse;
Dee: yes I agree that the net connects us, and I'm glad she "found" me;
Carol and Nancy: Get on it, I will ask you both later and Nancy I will write you with instructions.

Interesting informtion Barbara. Thanks for sharing in spite of the techinical problems you had.

If you are getting accustomed to FTM 2010 you might want to consider upgrading to 2011 - has better features. I still have my FTM16 that I love but I suspect that when I can no longer use Windows XP 16 will not work. It doesn't work on Windows 7 that I have on my new laptop.

Said too much... later ;o)

Barbara, I enjoyed reading about you connecting with another researcher. These pesky computers, off to back mine up:)

Congrats on connecting with another researcher! That rocks!

And I'm sorry about your computer. It sounds like you were as prepared as you could be, Still it's no good when they crash. There's never a good time.
