There are some interesting and unusual names among these families, Barbara: Waitstill, Preserved, Experience, Hopestill, Thanks, Desire, Unite, Supply, Return, Thankful, and Jerijah. A Quaker heritage? I do wonder if they ever used nicknames and what they might have been for some of them. I can also imagine that the parents were thinking wishfully in naming a child Waitstill. Can any little boy be still to wait for longer than the briefest moment? It looks like they wouldn't have had the opportunity to learn whether he could because he died at such a young age.
Nancy, I don't know about their religion, however, I should look it up (if available). You know, I almost typed those names, but decided to cut it short. However, I have several other Waitstills in my Munson line, a father and son! Thanks for your comment.
I don't see any Fords in my tree, but I do have Lymans, Strongs, and Clapps, from Hampshire County.
Lots of great detail here, Barbara. I always open my index when looking at early colony names hoping there will be a clue or an overlap in ancestors. So far none, but one day...
As for names, I have lots of Thankful, Desire and other such names from this era. But my favourite woman's name in my tree is Freelove Mitchell.
Leah, Some of the Strong line lived in Hampshire, but my direct line went to CT. My Clapp line remained near Boston. However, they are probably related. Thanks for writing. (I wish I had ancestors from Brookfield...I love your area.)
Celia, I thought we shared a surname, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one. Do you have any ancestors from CT? My husband has a Freelove Moody, and they called her Lovey, her parents from Maine is his brick wall. Very nice hearing from you, thanks.
Interesting. I did a couple of articles on the Clap family - one on the children's names and one on Roger Clap's spiritual legacy:
