Surname Saturday -- All About Names Beginning with My Father to Generation 6

Surname Saturday is all about names. We can write about one person, our family, another unrelated family or even about a person who is a brick wall. Just about anything goes. Last week's post "Numbers on the Tree" proved to be an eye-opener, because after I posted it, I printed out my entire tree, thanks to RootsMagic4. Not only was I able to see whom I'm missing, but I saw the Location Report was a total mess, and nothing at all professional looking (I will deal with this problem later).

I am listing my first five generations, not to impress anybody but to hopefully get a cousin connection. Most of my readers are finding me through google searches because they want information on a surname they are looking for, a report about a historic site, a certain cemetery, the DAR, NEHGS, a historical society, a location, or something about a celebrity or murder. So, it goes without saying, if you happen to find my site, and have any of these names, I would love to hear from you. This Generation List will be continued next week.

My Facts and Fiction In New York City

Did I really do that, did I dream it, or did I make it up? These were the questions I asked myself when I decided to write about one of my vacations as a child, and probably my only vacation. The other weeks away were always to Girl Scout overnight camps, and I didn't think of them as vacations.

My grandfather lived in Connecticut, but commuted to his apartment in New York City, to do his architectural work. He had recently re-married in 1953, and they asked me to join them in the city a year or so later. I had been to the city the previous year with my parents, to visit my uncle who was attending medical school at Columbia. Perhaps I mentioned how I liked the city, and based on that they decided to invite me. Or maybe they wanted me to get to know my new step-grandmother.

Piecing my trip together was like doing a puzzle. I knew what I saw and where we went, I just don't know the month or for how long, and I don't know if we saw anything else. Unfortunately, the Christmas card my grandfather made didn't have a date, but at least I knew where I spent the vacation, it was at 121 E. 31 Street, New York.

The address was in the Murray Hill section of the city. Construction was begun in 1930 and completed the following year. There are 12 floors, but I don't know what floor they were on. Their apartment was small, and there were lots of pigeons on the window sill.

The building was four blocks from Empire State Building (thanks to google maps) and a good hike to the United Nations, both places we walked to and toured. I remember the heat one day and seeing the sunset walking back to the apartment through a narrow street. I don't remember taking the subway or a cab, but we probably did at least a few times.

The biggest clue as to the time frame was the movie and show we saw at the Radio City Music Hall, it was, "The Seven Little Foys" with Bob Hope and James Cagney, and since it was released in 1955, I know it was summer, because it was so hot!

Things I had never seen before, but was introduced to were: the Murphy bed, the auto-mat (think we went more than once), and seeing one of the largest F.W.Woolworth stores in the United States (I remember being told that).

Chinatown has always been painted in my memory because it was so beautiful at night. They bought me a lovely black silk fan with painted flowers and birds, and I had it for many years, until it fell apart. I've been back to Chinatown several times, but never during the evening, so it is always the first visit that I remember the most.

Every tourist goes to The Statue of Liberty and I was no exception. I've no real memory of it, just that we went. Or is this fiction? Did I have a nice time, I haven't a clue, so I'll say "yes," it was my first major trip away from my parents, but maybe I was miserable!

Summer vacations are ending, and I thought I'd write a little something about myself. All the activities and memories didn't come automatically as I begin writing this. I worked on it for several days, looked at a NYC map, and forced my memory to remember!

Tombstone Tuesday -- Cutler of Killingly Now Putnam, Connecticut

This past weekend I went on another cemetery hunt, this being my 4th trip to Connecticut this summer. The timing was the worst as far as photographing the stone. As with all my other visits, I knew exactly which cemetery this person was in. But I didn't know the sun would be casting a huge shadow on the stone. My heart sank of course. Luckly, there is a great photo in FindAGrave and Jack Shackles who took the better picture gave me permission to post (see below).
Putnam, Windham Co., Connecticut
Hezekiah Cutler
Born: Abt 20 Apr 1707, Lexington, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts
Died: 4 Oct 1792, Killingly, Windham Co., Connecticut
His Wife
Susanna Clark
Born: Abt 1712, Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts
Died: April 4, 1775, Killingly, Windham Co., Connecticut

They were my 5th great-grandparents.

Note: They were the parents of the well-known Manasseh Cutler

The Boy Scouts made the sign and diagram of the cemetery plots (no names were given).

Numbers on the Tree -- Surname Saturday

When Judy Russell's blog appeared this morning (Saturday, August 18th), I read it and realized her topic was something I was interested in. Her blog is The Legal Genealogist, and the topic was "More Lost than Found" about statistics, that being how many ancestors she had for each generation and comparing the numbers to the possible numbers for each generation. Genealogy blogs and my facebook friends often get ideas for their topics from others, and in this case, Judy got it from Lisa B. Lee, who did an analysis of her own family (on facebook), by figuring out how many ancestors she has for each generation and compared the figures to what she could have.

Since I have a RootsWeb tree, you may see my first 6 generations here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&db=trees4u&id=I28370

And, if the pedigree chart interests you (does All generations), you can follow my tree here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=trees4u&id=I28370

My figures surprised me, but doesn't impress me. Why? I am focused on my "Brick Walls" and that's what matters. For almost 23 years, genealogy has been my life, and I've been lucky (lots of time, a husband, no children). My lines are mostly in Massachusetts and Connecticut, where I've found excellent records. Great records were found in New York and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. I've been to all those places and continue to hunt for information and cemetery stones. I also love cousin connections, cousins can help a great deal. One great-grandfather did a large manuscript, now at NEHGS, and one grandfather, another side, worked on genealogy for many years (both were professional men whose work helped me get a good start), as well as my working at the DAR for quite a few years, where I looked at books on a daily basis and received help from their genealogy staff. All those factors have contributed to my being lucky and having high statistics, but I really want to solve the brick walls.

Kemps -- Are the ones below yours? Surname Saturday

Carolyn Bannister and other readers have written me about the KEMP line and I've never been able to help, because as far as I know, they aren't related to me, and I don't have enough information. The Kemps were neighbors of my ancestors, and their paths crossed, but for some reason quite a few people have written me about their families. I've posted, what I believe are two separate lines of the KEMP line. Quite possibly they are related, but I haven't found a connection. The first line is directly below, the second is in bold. If you have any information, I know Carolyn and others would be delighted to hear from you.
