Chelmsford, MA Vietnam Memorial and Park Photos

I knew a lot of men who were either drafted or enlisted into the Vietnam War. Some were classmates, some were co-workers of mine, when I was in the Army, and one was a close neighbor. I always knew the neighbor died in action, but little did I know there was a memorial dedicated to those from Chelmsford who died. I probably pass by this park twice a month, and have never stopped until two weeks ago. I was a little taken back to find my neighbor's name, John F. Bettencourt, on this memorial.

Lowell, MA Names all Those Mustered Out in the Civil War

During today's visit to see an exhibit in Lowell, I was reminded about the blog post I wrote a few years ago about, "The Lexington of 1861." And, upon wondering where the names came from on the below Roll of Honor, I remembered a huge project a few genealogy friends and I undertook. We entered over 3,500 names into a data base. Please see how you can view the names (below).

The exhibit is called,
Lowell and the Civil War
First Blood: The Lexington of 1861

Since this is Memorial Day weekend, I decided to post these two photos and include my post of two years ago where I explained the story of, "The Minutemen of 1861  --  First Soldiers to Die in Civil War Were From Lowell" The names above are those who enlisted, The names of those who died are listed on large plaques hung high in the Lowell Library. (See photos below.)

Many years ago, a few of us in the local genealogy club went through huge ledgers and transcribed 3,525 names of Soldiers and Sailors mustered from Lowell during the Civil War (1861 to 1865). We entered their information into a data base several of us had on our computers. I believe I did two books. The writing was beautiful, the only problem was the books were huge and heavy.

The 3,525 names can be seen HERE. Please take a peek if your ancestor lived in the Lowell area, or England, Germany or any of the New England states. In other words, they came from all over. Scroll to the end as there are many death dates and locations included.

Photos taken years ago at the Lowell Library of those who gave their lives in war. I hope to retake pictures and perhaps type up a list.

100 Objects, One Belonged to my Ancestor

If your ancestors lived in Quebec and spoke English, then you might be interested in online exhibit called, The Identity of English-speaking Quebec in 100 Objects. I am writing about this because Heather Darch, Curator of the Missisquoi Historical Society/Missisquoi Museum shared the information with me. Remember my ancestor's Revolutionary War Red Coat story? Well, that is one of the 100 objects. If you the Objects tab, #5, the Loyalist coat, c. 1770, scroll down for additional detailed information. She told me, "The Ten Eyck red coat has headed off to the Centre de conservation du Québec at long last. Although it was accepted for conservation ages ago, we were only given permission this past month to send it to them. It will likely be out of the collection for a year. When it returns, I will send you up-to-date images. The coat was accepted as one of the 100 significant objects of the history of English-speaking Quebec. The project called the Significant Objects for Telling Identity by the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network created a website and a DVD featuring 100 objects from across the province that reflected the diverse English-speaking culture and heritage of Quebec." I am thrilled times two over because the coat is one of the 100 objects chosen and I can't wait to hear what the experts say about it.

A little more about the exhibit all can see. The website "gives an overview of 100 objects with their 100 stories. "It is a portrait of the English-speaking communities of Quebec, in all their diversity."

"The 2011 Canada Census identified 1,058,250 persons who spoke English as their first official language rather than French. This represents 13.5% of Quebec’s total population." If you have any ancestors from Quebec, have an interest in history or just love learning about their early life, this is the perfect introduction for you. In addition, there is a timeline tab which provides historical context, and you can use your own descriptions of some of the items to incorporate into your family story."
"Since it was founded in 2000, the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network has striven to fulfill its mission of “promoting the preservation of the built, cultural and natural heritage of Quebec,” and more specifically the cultural heritage of Quebec’s diverse and geographically far-flung English-speaking communities."

Daniels House, Salem, Massachusetts

The dates of 1667 - 1756 on the Stephen Daniels House in Salem, Massachusetts are an indication to me, that quite possibly, four of my six Stephen Daniels lived during that time frame in this house. All six generations lived in Salem. Visiting the area, and walking the street, #1 Daniels Street, now a bed and breakfast, was indeed a treat. I've known about it for years, but the desire to see it was prompted by the unbelievable pictures I saw of it on facebook after a winter storm this year. Please see below photos taken in the winter by a resident on that street.

1667 - 1756
Stephen Daniels House

Back in February, I posted the below blog about the house located in Salem, Massachusetts.
At first glance, I thought these two images were drawings, then discovered they were photographs of the Stephen Daniels house in Salem, Massachusetts. Immediately, I wrote the photographer to see if I could copy it to this blog. Tom Stirling gave me his permission. It was taken during one of our area's largest snowstorms. I don't remember ever putting somebody else's photos on my site, but I'm so happy to put Tom's here.
I have seen pictures of it, but have never gone, but will this spring, especially since it isn't far from where I live. I've got 6 generations of Stephen Daniels in my tree, so I'm not sure exactly which one lived here. Some investigating needs to be done. The house is a bed and breakfast, so I could stay there too.

While looking for Lilacs, we discovered the General

While looking for lilacs to photograph, my husband remembered a huge grove of them in Dracut, Massachusetts, a small town next to where I live. The lilacs were way too high for us to touch and smell, so I walked across the street to take the photo below. I've seen the memorial hundreds of times, but never stopped to read it.
In Memory of
General
Casimir Pulaski
Born in Poland 1748
Died for America
At Savannah GA. 1789

Donated by
Polish American Citizen's Club
Dracut, Mass. 1934.

Naturally, I had to look him up. There was a huge amount of information. So, if you are interested in the Revolutionary War, you might want to read these links: HERE, HERE and HERE.

Do You Know?

As of May 31, 2013, there are now 100 Million grave records on FindAGrave. Their announcement is as follows:

Find A Grave passes the 100 MILLION mark!
And we're growing faster than ever!
Last month, Find A Grave contributors added
2 million new memorials and 1.8 million new photos!
Go, Team Find A Grave, Go!
Now, on to the next 100 million...
[Click to visit the 100 millionth memorial]

How long does it take Find A Grave to add a million grave records into their site?

By my calculation it is now taking just a little over 3 weeks. I base this on my visual viewing of their site, since I am on it almost every day. The weeks between December 7 and January 1 took a little bit longer to reach the million mark, due to holiday activities. I say by August 15th they will hit the 100,000,000 mark. What do you think? (I now think June 5th. (Date picked on April 26th))

In November, I wrote, Have You Looked Lately? a short piece about FindAGrave. For each new figure, I updated my blog to reflect the stats.

** While I was working with Find A Grave today, December 7, 2012, the total went to 91 million  grave records.

** The total is now 92 million grave records as of January 1, 2013!

** The total is now 93 million grave records as of January 22, 2013!

** The total is now 94 million grave records as of February 13, 2013!

** The total is now 95 million grave records as of March 4, 2013!

** The total is now 96 million grave records as of March 24, 2013!

** The total is now 97 million grave records as of April 11, 2013!

** The total is now 98 million grave records as of April 26, 2013!

** The total is now 99 million grave records as of May 14, 2013!

Mr. Fay and Father John's Medicine Co., of Lowell

Many years ago, one of my bosses lived in this beautiful old house.  It originally belonged to Mr. Aubert J. Fay, who owned Father John's Medicine Co., Inc., where I worked for over 10 years.
I never met Mr. Fay, because he died in 1944, nor his wife, who died in 1965. She continued to live in the house until her death. As a matter of fact, her wake was held in the house, and that was the only time I stepped foot inside it. Although I don't know the history or much about Mr. Fay, other than material obtained through Ancestry, I intend to go to the Lowell archives and try to find out more. I do know the house was built in 1904. I want to know when he began the company and how and why his house and reins of the company were passed into the hands of the Donehue family, the father,  then his two sons, Gerald F. and George H. As long as I knew the sons, Gerald lived alone in this house and he was also the president of the company at the time I left. Brother George lived a few blocks away with his wife.

Cemetery photos for the Donehue family may be seen HERE. Cemetery photos for the Fay family may be seen below.

Two for One Regarding the Wayside Inn

This is a two-for-one posting. Last week a friend wrote a wonderful post and I'm sharing it here for you to read. You'll be glad you did. Diane Boumenot does a superb job with her blog called, One Rhode Island Family. Please read her "Buckley Parmenter and The Wayside Inn" post HERE.

I decided to re-post my blog from three years ago because I think some of you might have missed it.

Originally posted on Sunday, April 25, 2010.

On April 15, 1972, I attended a wedding at the Martha Mary Chapel in Sudbury, Massachusetts. The above menu is from that day. Yesterday, April 24, 2010, my husband and I went to the Sudbury Inn and ate there. They still serve the Yankee Pot Roast and Chicken Pot Pie, both are still delicious (prices much higher though).
The Inn / Restaurant is shown above.
"Longfellow's Wayside Inn is proud to be the oldest operating Inn in the country, offering comfort and hospitality to travelers along the Boston Post Road since 1716."
Revolutionary War events still taking place.
The wedding in 1972 was held at the Martha-Mary Chapel, just feet from the Inn.

Movie lovers may have seen the Chapel on films, as it has been in many movies, including a few coming out this year.
Across the street is a beautiful, still-working grist mill.
