How Do You Say Goodbye to your Genealogy Research? This is What I Did.

I don't remember who I got this photo from, I've had it for over 25 years. The minute I received it, I knew I had to locate the tombstone of my 5th great-grandfather, Hendrick Schrambling. (My blog with photos.). This photo set me on the trail to research this family, it led me from New York to Michigan.

Two weeks ago, I contacted one of my favorite distant cousins related through this line. His line ended in Oklahoma, mine in Michigan. After much thought, I knew it was time to put some of my 32-year-old research to rest, so I wrote him, "I have decided to part with these papers and more of the early family...but I can't just toss them. What I would like to do is send it to you, ha and you can do as you please. As you probably know, we have spent many hours and days on this line. The project of my going over each piece of paper will take weeks, and I look forward to it." Unfortunately, he turned me down because he has his own stuff and nobody in his family is interested in genealogy! Oh no. Since he is the only one I've communicated with in years on this line, I decided to share some of what I have and then just toss them. Nobody has contacted me about this line in over ten years, even though I have written articles about the family in my blog. Years ago, a Schrambling cousin did a list of all the spellings for this name and I'm sharing it to peak some interest.

The best way to show what I have is to take photos.

Below are sources from various people and a few of mine. The purpose of doing this is to reach out to any Scrambling cousins who might have an interest. A brief description is below each photo.

• My good friend Eileen Wood of Las Vegas put her information in a  newsletter for all subscribers to receive, I think I received 6-7 issues. The newsletter was quite a professional piece of work. She had charts, color photos and the names of all remembers (middle picture), I am listed as #2. She even sent me a DVD of her tree. The third pile consists of information from two sisters (one from NH and the other from FL) who took a journey to follow Hendrick's path from New York (West Camp, Oneonta, Canajoharie Creek in the Mohawk Valley, Stone Arabia) to Climax, Michigan. One sister had terminal cancer and it was her wish to make this trip Her husband did the driving. Soon after the trip, I went to Concord, NH to visit her sister, Laura, and got a copy of everything. They had a great time.

Photos of a binder with information about the Schremblings of Canajohaare and other data by Joyce Rideinger took the photos, wrote about her line, and added  additional information; the middle photos are from my visit to two Oneonta cemeteries with my husband and met a friend, Sandy Goodspeed, who located all the stones before I arrived, and one of the early books I used to find "Schraemling, Henrich (9) and his wife Maria Elisabeth with 5 children." The book is often referred to as the Simmendinger Register.

• The first chart is in three pieces, and the second is showing a bit of detail. I received them from Peter or Lary Scramlin of Washington state over 20 years ago. The top sheet, peace together is 83"long, and 42" wide. They were very hard to handle. I hope to locate him to return them. UPDATE: I JUST LOCATED THE SON OF THE PERSON WHO MIGHT HAVE DONE THIS. We had a nice chat and knew a lot about the family especially since he lives in the county where the family lived for almost 200 years. I'm sending this report to him.

The Six-page legal-size will of Hendrick Schrambling is dated Feb. 24, 1808.  The top report on the right is a Family Map of 17 pages showing where the Scramblings lived in the United States and Canada. I prepared this in 2006. The bottom report of 16 pages is very detailed. I got this from Eileen, the writer of the newsletter. It was done by her mother.

The first row in order, consists of several pieces of correspondence to me, back when I used AOL in 2001; the middle pile has four pages with 17 different sources for Hendrick Schrambling that I did and shared; the third pile is 83 pages of the Descendants of Hendrick Schrambling. The bottom lineage report was from Wendell Scramlin of Climax, Michigan.

Another chart was sent to me on two legal-size sheets of paper drawn by Harvey Baker of Florida (no date). The bottom row has a part of the pile of DAR applications I got when I visited the DAR in 2001. The middle is a very detailed summary report, dated 1990 and the last is also an old report (no idea who I got these two things from).



I was given this photocopy of a group of Scrambling / Scramlin / etc. descendants who got together 20+ years ago in the New York State Library to meet and share information. Cousins Larry and Helen are on the right. The other photo is too dark to see anything. The chart above the photo indicated the lineage they have from Hendrick Scrambling.


I'm giving credit to all those who helped me over the years. They either shared their information, went to Libraries for obits, or took cemetery photos in states I've never been to, like Michigan.


Eileen Wood, Frances Fagan, Joyce Riedinger, Larry Scramlin, Joyce Riedinger, Helen Burkett, Sandy Goodspeed, Joyce Luscomb, David Rumery, Gary Hanna, Brenda Glover Leyndyke, Sharonii Roberts, Linda Herrell, and Ted Metscher. Four are now deceased. I've only met two, they are Brenda Leyndyke from MI and Sandy Goodspeed from NY. Nine in this group have a Scrambling in their tree.

Three Generations in My Family Wrote to the Same Cemetery

My great-grandparents buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Several years ago, I requested information from the Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan to see if they had any information on quite a few ancestors and family members buried there. Since this post is about three generations contacting the same cemetery about the same question, I am making me as generation one. My father is generation two and my grandfather is generation three.

They responded by providing plat cards, a map of the cemetery, and enclosing copies of letters written to them by my father, grandfather, and grandmother! The most recent letter was written in 1961 by my father, as shown below. Clearly, my father wasn't into genealogy because he had question marks on four names.

Through the years, I managed to get cemetery photos of my direct ancestors buried there, solved the relationships, and now know all their full names. I loved knowing that my grandparents and father had an interest in those buried in the plot.

But, the best part of all this is what my grandfather wrote, "So far as I know, the statement in the letter above is correct since Mrs. Poole had never been able to find any trace of the John A. Adams branch of the family." It is because of this statement that I'm doing this post.

Naturally, I was up to the challenge, since this was my great-granduncle. My ancestor stayed in Michigan whereas his brother moved to Texas. Tracing the family was rather simple, but I never tried to contact family members, although I think I could have because of their business. Then one day, a few months ago.....my third cousin wrote me! She was thrilled that I knew the answers to some of her questions, and I was beyond excited to hear from her line and to get answers to some of mine. She mailed me a manuscript, and I've gotten together copies of all my Adams papers to mail to her. Because of my new cousin, I ordered and just received last week, the will and probate of our 3rd great-grandfather who died in 1879 in Wisconsin. It will be a treat to share it with her.

THE LETTERS

Letter to Oak Hill Cemetery from my father:

April 5, 1961

Oak Hill Cemetery Company
255 South Ave.
Battle Creek, Mich.

Gentlemen:

In [sic] working up a genealogy for the Adams branch of my family, I have come across records stating that my grandfather and grandmother, also some great grandparents are buried at Oak Hill. I have very little information on them and would appreciate any data you might have on the following;

1.  Sarah Belle Adams
2.  Yates Adams
3.   Martha Anderson Adams
4.   Charles A. Hamilton, first husband of Sarah (1.)
5.   John Adams, brother? of Yates (2)
6.   Wife of John (5.)

A letter from my mother, Marjorie Anderson Adams Poole, indicates that the lot number is 797 for the above.

In lot 665, are my great grandparents as follows:
7.   John N. Farmer
8.   Lana? Scramlin wife of (7.)
9.   Elsie Farmer
10. Nannie? Farmer
11. Mary? second wife of (7.)

I would greatly appreciate any vital statistics of the above families. To my knowledge, no plats were ever made up for my family as indicated in your letter to my father Clarence F. Poole, Chicago, Ill., dated Feb. 3, 1953. If these plats are available, I would appreciate a copy of them.

I also received a copy of what my grandfather wrote in 1953, shortly after my grandmother's death. She had been interested in the family plot as well.

My grandfather, Clarence F. Poole wrote to Oak Hill Cemetery on January 30, 1953.

"Gentlemen:
I am writing to inquire regarding the status of Lot 797 which, I believe, is entered in the names of John A. Adams and Yates A. Adams, and the East 1/2 of Lot 665 which, I believe is entered in the name of John N. Farmer.

I am executor of the estate of Marjorie A. Poole who passed away a few weeks ago. (There are two more paragraphs about what he is trying to find out.)

Small note by my grandmother, never mailed by her, but was sent by her husband five years later.

"Among her (my grandmother) papers, I find a letter which was hand written to you but never mailed, this letter being dated June 6, 1948, and reading as follows:

'Oak Hill Cemetery Co:
Dear Sirs:

I have made an effort to trace the heirs of John A. Adams wo whom is ascribed the ownership of Lot 797, W 1/2 and have not been able to trace them. They were last in Texas - Beeville - in 1910 or 1912 and there was a Howard Adams and two daughters, but I have heard nothing of them since. I have hoped to go to Battle Creek before this time to settle the matter of perpetual care, etc., but have been ill and unable to do so. However, I expect to be in Battle Creek in the near future. Yours Sincerely,  /s/ Marjorie A. Poole'

So far as I know, the statement in the letter above is correct since Mrs. Poole had never been able to find any trace of the John A. Adams branch of the family."

Lillie Or Lilley -- Surname Saturday

The Lillie / Lilley surname has always been a favorite of mine even though I don't share a direct line. Over the years, several people have contacted me because they saw I had a Scrambling connection. I have over 600 individuals in my tree with that surname. There are some blanks to be filled in, in this tree but perhaps some of what I have might be of use to a person working on the descendants of Roswell Lillie. This family began in Vermont, and ended up in New York, Louisiana, and Michigan.

Newberry of Connecticut and Michigan

A Bridge to the Past

One of my oldest and dearest genealogy friends passed away last March. I learned of her passing when I called her in Michigan (I live in Massachusetts) to share some news. Her grand-daughter answered the phone and gave me the news. One of her favorite lines was the Newberry family, out of Connecticut and migrated to Michigan. We were 5th cousins, once removed and our shared line was Scrambling.

Because she had sent me her report on the Newberry family, I've decided to share it. I think she would be happy I did. Unfortunately, I don't have sources, but can tell you that she was a member of several genealogy clubs and had been doing genealogy way longer than my 23 years.

It is pretty interesting to think that two people can connect through a building and an occupation, not just through genealogy (we are 5th cousins, once removed). My 2nd great-grandfather, William Frederick Poole, was the first librarian at the Newberry Library and her 2nd great-uncle provided the funds to have the library built.  The above paragraph was written for my blog post, which may be read HERE.

Farmon, twin of Harmon, Scramlin Obituary

Farmon Scramlin was my first cousin 4x removed.

          Mr. Farmon Scramlin died at the

home of his son-in-law, Jay Sanstrom,

Thursday forenoon, June 30, at about

9:15. Mr. Scramlin was at work hoeing

among the out door plants at the

greenhouse Tuesday forenoon, and was

apparently in his usual health. At

about 11 o’clock he was seen at work,

and a short time later he was found

lying on the ground in an unconscious

condition. He was carried to Mr. A.

Melby’s residence where his son-in-

law lives, and medical aid summoned

all that could be done was restore

consciousness, but without avail, and

he gradually failed and he breathed

his last at the hour above stated.

Mr. Scramlin was born in Charleston,

Michigan, May 11, 1841, and in

1850 came to this county with his

parents. In June 1864 he enlisted in

Co. H, 76^th Ill. Inf., and went to the

front. He served with his regiment

through the war, and at Ft. Blakely

was wounded in the right arm. At

the close of the war he returned here

and took a position as clerk in Patterson’s

hardware department, learning the tinner’s trade.

In 1871 he formed a partnership with W. Astle

in the hardware business. Later the

partnership ended and Mr. Scramlin

went into the same business in Grant

Park, remaining there seven years; he

then traveled for two years for the

Temple Pump Co. He then engaged

in farming, which he followed until

1888, when he moved into town.

During his long residence in this

city he made many friends who deeply

regret his sudden death. He was a successful

man in business as well as in farming,

and only gave up the latter when

compelled to do so on account of

the weight of years and ill health.

On October 3, 1872, Mr. Scramlin

was married to Miss Mary Lamport.

To them one daughter was born, Lura

M., the wife of J. Sanstrom. The wife

also survives him.

            Mr. Scramlin was a Mason, being a

charter member of the Grant Park

lodge, and was also a member of Worcester

Post, No. 627 G. A. R. In his death

these societies have lost a most

consistent and valued member.

            The funeral services will be held

from his late residence on West Fourth

Street tomorrow, Saturday, afternoon

At 2 o’clock.

Obituary of Harriet Ford Westover

Westover--Harriet, wife of John

F. Westover, died at the family home

801 Joslin Street, Tuesday from a

complication of diseases, age 62

years. Harriet Ford was born in Port

Burbal, Ont., Sept. 25, 1849, and was

married to Mr. Westover in 1866. After

their marriage they lived in Port Bur-

bal until 1876, when they came to

Saginaw. Mrs. Westover was a mem-

ber of the Episcopal church. She

leaves her husband, two sons and five

daughters, Harry Westover and Mrs.

Henry Ryder of Saginaw; William of

Toledo, O.; Mrs. Thomas Glenn of

Ashtabula, O.; Mrs. Benjamin G.

Watkins and Mrs. Roy Davidson of

Battle Creek, and Mrs. Carl Watz of

Portland, Ore. The funeral will take

place at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from

the family residence. Interment in

Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The petition of Charles R. Gould of the town of Batavia in the said County Genesee respectfully represents: That Amos H. Adams late of the town of Batavia in the said County, departed this life in Batavia, N.Y. on the 22^nd day of August, 1907, at the age of 84 years, having previously, as the petitioner is informed and believed duly made, executed and published his LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT bearing date the 29^th day of June 1901, which is now produced : That the petitioner Charles R. Gould is named in said Will as executor.

That the said deceased was at the time of making and publishing said LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of sufficient age to enable him to make such will and at his decease, an inhabitant of the County of Genesee.

That said LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT relates to real and personal estate, and the deceased died possessed of real and personal estate in the said County of Genesee.

The petitioner further shows that according to the best of his knowledge and judgment, the estate and effects for and in respect to which probate is herein applied for, will not exceed the value of ninety eight hundred Dollars. And the personal property of testator will not exceed the value of fifty eight hundred Dollars.
