The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Westover, A New Branch To Me -- Surname Saturday

During the past several months, I've been working with several individuals on their lines. One was for the Westover surname. The reason Jack Westover contacted me was because he saw my RootsWeb site had over 1,000 of that surname. I was delighted when he offered to share his Amasa's lineage, since I didn't have anything more than just the name. Jack is allowing me to share and hopefully, it will help somebody. Amasa's father, Moses was my 5th great-grandfather, and was both a Revolutionary War Patriot from Massachusetts who became a Loyalist and settled in Quebec, Canada. (Moses is listed below as the father to Amasa.)

Brick Walls of My Readers on Surname Saturday

Permission given to use clip art by Bio Organics

Over the years, I have received hundreds of requests for help, I would say half of them I am able to help, which brings quite a bit of satisfaction. However, the others, if after my suggestions don't pan out, the person is usually left with a brick wall. This past week, I received two such requests and suddenly thought, why not post their letters. I have my own Brick Walls on a blog post, why not post theirs. I'll either use their entire letter or parts of it with pertinent information. If anybody has information on these unknown people, please write me and I will put you in touch with the appropriate person.

In addition, if anybody wants to write a piece on their brickwall, please do. Just send them to me, and I'll post here. This will be like a query board. Let's see what happens.

#1 "Hello Barbara,
It is me again. I had contacted you concerning the Lowrey / Grinnell Families and your help was so wonderful. I have followed your blogs ever since and find them so interesting. Again, thank you for all of your work!

Well, in reading the last few weeks, I noticed your connection to Momence, Illinois and the Hess family of the region. I've hit a stone wall with my great-great-great grandfather Andrew G. Hess who lived in  Iroquois County Illinois (near Momence). He was supposedly born in 1830 in Pennsylvania although I found in the 1860 Census his birthplace was listed "unknown". He was a drayman and married Sarah Sapp (born 1836 in Illinois, the daughter of Asa and Allie (Thomas) Sapp. Her nickname was Sallie.) The couple had children Ally (1854), Phebe (1856), LAVINA SEREPTA -my line (1859), twins Calvin and Benjamin (1866), Samuel (1868) and Andrew E. (1871). Andrew was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery when he died in Watseka, Illinois July 13, 1884( Find-a-Grave) but no mention of Sallie's burial there.

I was just wondering if in your years vast research, if you ever came across mention of him, his parents or his family? Hess is a very popular name since a whole German part of the  country seems to have used this but the geographical location of the family and the early date of living in the same area may be coincidental  or they may actually tie in somewhere to the Scramlin - Hess Family that you have researched.

Thanks again for all your efforts!

Sincerely,
Bill"

#2 "Hi Barbara,
I have started researching my Westover genealogy. My father was Orville Francis Westover (1915-1992). My grandfather was Thomas Francis Westover (born in NY in April 1885 or 1887). My great-grandfather was Stephen Westover. According to the 1900 Census, he was living in Oneonta, Ostego, NY. He was born in Canada in October 1857. He had been married to Josephine Shortsleeve Westover (nickname "Rina"?) for 22 years. Josephine was born in May 1861 in New York. Their children are Thomas, May, Della, Harry, Arthur, Roy, and Reva. There is one other child that I don't know the name of. Both Thomas and Stephen were boilermakers for the railroad and the family moved frequently.

I am wondering if this Stephen Westover might be the Stephen that is on your family tree (born 1859 in Canada, son of Orange Westover). Do you have any suggestions on how to figure out if these are the same people?

Thanks for your help!
Nancy Westover S."

A Huge Age Difference and 6 Maiden Names

Every once in a while, I came across a record that demands a second look. The recent one was the 1940 census for Charleston, Orleans, Vermont showing Alexander Westover age 72 and Mary E. Westover age 26, as husband and wife. Naturally, I thought it was an error and I needed to investigate.

Seeing that Alexander was married, now 72, was a surprise, since he was a widower in 1930.

Their marriage record shows Alexander Westover, age 62, No. of marriage/ second, married 14 Feb. 1934 at Richford, Franklin, VT, to Mary Elizabeth Clair, age 19, her first marriage. However, they managed to be married six years, with one child by the time of the 1940 census. Why did a 62 year old marry a 19 year old?

Alexander and Mary Elizabeth had Lawrence Alexander Westover born Aug. 24, 1935 at Belvidere, Vt. Listed parents were Alexander Westover age 66 and engineer, born Berkshire, Vt. and Mary Elizabeth Clair age 20 born Sheldon, Vt.  (Note, he aged 4 years and she just 1 year.)

His previous marriage, #2 from Vermont Vital Records 1871 to 1908 (located at NEHGS*). Roll #445. Pg. 935. Alexander Weston, [sic] as typed, then hand written as Westover was 31, a laborer of Jay, VT, No. of Marriage 2 (Divorced) married Emma Ruby Bell on May 8, 1906 at Jay, VT. Per Roll #299 Emma was age 18, b. Jay, VT. Notice he was divorced by 31 and married an 18 year old. Emma died in 1928.

Marriage #1 to Ethel Davis was before 1906 and I have no record for the marriage or when it ended, but they did have children from this union.

Why did marry such young girls? Maybe Alexander was from a dysfunctional family, and had a thing for younger wives. I also wonder what was going on with his mother as well. Why did the majority of his siblings not know their mother's maiden name? For example, 6 of the 13 children didn't know the correct maiden name. The mother Orilla is always listed as being married to Moses Westover, however her maiden name could be any one of the six below.

Marriage of Alexander's siblings who state their mother was:
Ida married 1878, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Booth
John Alfred married 1889, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Burnham
Rufus married 1893, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Burnham
Frank married 1914, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla King
Alice married 1932, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Burman
Alexander married 1934, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Bonney

The 1953 Death record for Alexander, parents: Moses Westover and Ovillan Bonneau. The death record for his mother, shows her name as: Orilla Hepsibah Bonneau Westover in 1897.

Independent and Not Corrupted

In the past, I've mentioned my huge Westover tree, with about 950 people with the surname of Westover. So why not add a few more? Ginny initially wrote in early August, 2012, after seeing my blog; saying she had, "other information from an old family list called 'Westover Family Record' from my mother's family, and would be happy to share what tidbits I can, if you are interested in enlarging your large collection of Westovers yet further!"

Ginny's information is valuable because all her information is new. Ancestry and other sites have William married only to Catherine Hostetter, and not to his first wife Eleanor, who was the mother of three of his children, one being Ginny's direct line. She lives in Wisconsin and recently went on a research trip to Ontario and found supporting information.

Based on her information, we know this is a new line. I especially like what she wrote, "To me it's interesting that what I've told you pre-dates the internet. So while you don't have the information and confirmations of information that the internet can provide, at the same time this information from my mother's family is independent and not corrupted, the way information on the internet can sometimes get corrupted and errors can get spread around. That's not to say that it is necessarily completely without error, of course." We all know how many errors are in the family trees found on the internet. I'm so glad Ginny and Sue from the previous day's post, Stunned Disbelief and Incredulous Silence, wrote me. Two great cousin connections were made.

Stunned Disbelief and Incredulous Silence

Last week, I posted, Do you Have Ellsworth in your Tree? There was a reason for that, I was trying to help somebody from New Zealand who has ancestors from the same county as mine in Quebec, Canada (I live in Massachusetts). On a whim, I sent the post to a good friend still living there in Missisquoi County, Quebec. This Ellsworth family is not in my direct line, we are very distant cousins, so, I had nothing to gain by writing the post.

You know how it goes, in what seemed minutes, I received three photos from my Canadian friend. These photos were of people mentioned in my post, and were family members of my New Zealand friend, Sue. One was of her gg-grandfather, she had never seen a photo of him before now, a photo that went from Canada, to Massachusetts to her, within a very short time.

She responded right away with, "I’m speechless, gratitude beyond measure." and "Stunned Disbelief and Incredulous Silence." You will always make somebody's day when you share information, so why not make somebody's day soon.

Westover Obituary with a lot of help.

How did I get so lucky? Last week, Linda Cromheecke sent me a pdf containing the below two images of her ancestor's obituary. (Linda received it from Margaret Maloney Croft, her cousin 2x removed.) I was very interested in the obituary because the Westover Canadian line is new to me. However, I couldn't open it, she sent another image, no luck either. So, I copied the pdf onto a flash drive, and FedEx transferred it to a jpeg for me, free of charge!

While I was attempting to transcribe this, there were too many names, and locations I just couldn't read. I decided to do a google search, using key words wild rose Wisconsin Yagler. I thought the Yagler family might have lived in Wild Rose, Wisconsin. It did, and up popped the obituary all typed (see below). Of course, I copied it, thus saving me at least an hour or more of trying to read the obit and figure out unfamiliar words. I guess that was a smart move, and it's my hint to you, constantly use google to help you. I just wish I could give credit, but here is the site: http://www.oocities.org/gail1668/ETTABRADFORD2.html (An old GeoCities site.) Thanks to Linda, FedEx and google for all your help.

"The Randolph Advance
Dodge County, Wisconsin
Thursday, March 12, 1931

Robert James Westover, youngest son of Isaac and Susan Westover, was born in St. Catherine, Canada, October 15, 1855, and passed to his eternal reward Friday morning at 12:30 o'clock March 6, 1931. At the age of eleven years he moved to Wisconsin with his parents and Settled in the town of Mackford, Green Lake county. He was untied in marriage to Etta Bradford of Westford, February 22, 1878. To this union nine children were born, two of whom preceded the parents in death. Mrs. J. N. Derby who passed away in 1914 and Claudia, who died in infancy.

Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Westover moved to Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, where they lived for about thirteen years, after which they moved back to Wisconsin and have lived in the vicinity of Fox Lake and Randolph to the close of life. For  the past thirty-two years Mr. Westover has lived in Randolph. His wife preceded him in death August 2, 1924 and since that time he has made his home with his daughters, Mrs. H. C. Smith and Mrs. O. J. Griffith.

Mr. Westover is survived by five daughters and two sons; Mrs. Herman Smith of Randolph, Mrs. Frank Yagler of Wild Rose, George of Markesan, Robert of Randolph, Mrs. Edward Maloney of Madison, Mrs. Sjouke Dykstra of Randolph and Mrs. O.J. Griffith of Randolph. His loss is also mourned by twenty-seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and a host of more distance relatives and friends, including two nephews, Sumner and Bruce Rogers.

About five weeks ago Mr. Westover was taken seriously ill at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maloney of Madison, and after a few days was moved to the hospital to receive the best medical treatment possible. He seemed to realize that his end was approaching and longed to get back to his home town of Randolph. The children took an ambulance and moved him back to his home with his youngest daughter, Mrs. O.J. Grittith where loving hands did all that children could do for a parent, but after the short sickness death entered and removed the father to his Eternal Home.

During his long residence in Randolph Mr. Westover has made a host of friends who honored him for his honestly and upright moral life. He was always of a genial nature and cared for the duties of life in an industrious fashion. For the past sixteen years he been sexton of the Randolph Cemetery and has kept everything in fine condition and has been kind and efficient to the hundreds of sorrowing people with whom he been associated. It will be difficult to find efficient and obliging a sexton to succeed him. Among the men of town he was greeted in the very friendly fashion. "Good morning, Dad".  He will be missed on our streets and at the cemetery as well as in his family.
Now the laborer’s task is o'er
Now the suffering all is past
Now upon the father where shore
Lands upon voyager at last
Father, in Thy precious keeping Leave we now Thy servant sleeping.

The Ladies Aid Society of the First Congregational church of Randolph served dinner in the parlors of the church Sunday noon to the family and relatives who were here for the funeral. Services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Grittith at 1:30 and at 2 o'clock from the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Daniel Woodward officiating, with interment in the Randolph cemetery.. Grandsons were pallbearers. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Smith and Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Downes sang three very appropriate selections as a quartet, accompanied at the pipe organ by Miss Lulu Smith. The church was filled to its extreme capacity at the services. - D. Woodward, Pastor.

Obituary states he was the youngest son Isaac and Susan Westover. Also started in obituary, he is survived by two nephews, Bruce and Sumner Rogers. Robert came to Wisconsin at the age of 11 with family and settled in town of Mackford, Green Lake County. Moved to Buffalo Lake, Rennville County, Minnesota with wife and children. Margaret Croft, granddaughter had been told the move to MN was to help Robert's parents. They lived there from about 1881 to 1893. The family moved back to Fox Lake/Randolph, Wisconsin to care for Etta's parents. According to Margaret the older children remembered coming back in a covered wagon with a cow walking behind. For a period of time they managed a hotel just north of Randolph, Bonnie Meade."

Westovers and More -- Surname Saturday

The number of Westovers in my tree hovers around 920. I can't say I know where they all lived or what their lines were. My Westover line started in England, moved to Connecticut, then Massachusetts, where my ancestor was both a Revolutionary War patriot and then became a Loyalist and moved to Canada.

When reader Darlene wrote recently about her line who lived in Westover, Pennsylvania, I did a quick check of my file and discovered I had only a few from her line. When she sent a listing of at least 160 Westovers buried in the Westover Baptist Church Cemetery (in Chest Twp., Clearfield County, Pennsylvania), I knew this was going to become a nice project of mine.
