This ADAMS line is the third of the same name, and comes from Massachusetts. The others were from New York and Connecticut. I have no idea if they will ever connect, but of course I can hope.

Looking Back For December 2010

Thank you to the 12 bloggers who posted their own personal favorite posts to my blog at Your Top Ten - Not My Top Ten over the weekend. Two were new to me, and I'm now following them. Anybody else can post until Sunday evening. There is some great reading in these posts, and it's a good way to read somebody new!

In my "Looking Back" post on the last day of each month, I like to do a public thank you to those who gave me an award. My usual policy is not to accept awards; I just don't feel comfortable with them. However, I do want to acknowledge them with gratitude.

In the future, please refrain from giving me any awards. I've been very lucky with all that I've received. But no more for 2011, please. On another note, I plan on cutting back on my blogs, my hope is to do 2-3 a week,  beginning Monday, and spend more time researching.

I'm not sure if anybody noticed, but I removed almost all of my "Wordless Wednesday" posts. I had way too many posts for the year, and deleted almost 55. What in the heck did I show / talk about?

Last year I wrote the following on December 31st, "The month of December was filled with wonderful blogs about Christmas traditions. Although, I didn't participate much, I sure enjoyed being on the receiving end and I will remember many posts for years to come." That statement applies to this year as well. However, I spent considerable time listening to all the Christmas music and watching YouTube videos that bloggers posted. A few new favorites: Let It Be Christmas Everywhere, Hallelujah Chorus at Food Court and Evening Bells.

"On Dec. 29th (2009), I noticed that http://www.findagrave.com/ hit 40 million entries. The day before, it was at 39 million, I sure would have loved seeing the number change." Earlier this month (Dec. 18, 2010), I posted to facebook that Find-A-Grave has 55 million grave records now. Nice increase.

This month I only took one Historical Society photo, that being the Littleton Historical Society in Littleton, Massachusetts.  (Pictured below.)

Scan or Photo?

What is better, a photo or a xeroxed picture, then scanned?  For years I've been xeroxing articles and pictures from genealogy books and just saving them, especially if there were photos I wanted to save. Many years ago, I saved them in my genealogy software, Family Tree Maker, until it slowed down my program when I backed up. Recently, I came across some photos taken with an inexpensive digital camera I carry at all times. These were of the same as those I had xeroxed a year ago.


The thought went through my mind, which of the two is better? I'll leave it up to you to decide. But, without a doubt, the photo was cheaper, because the xerox at the New England Historic and Genealogical Library (NEHGS) costs 25 cents. I played it safe with the camera and took four shots, natural light. Another options to capture an image is the popular Flip-Pal, written about by Susan Peterson in her post Lost Lost Relatives (parts 1 and 2). Please see my Note below.

December 23, 1694 in Fairfield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, and died Aft. 1755.  She married MOSES KNAP Bef. 1712 in Fairfield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, son of JOSIAH KNAP and SYBIL DICKERSON.  He was born 1688 in Fairfield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, and died Bet. November 03 - 11, 1755 in Redding, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.

Delight Adams Benham and The Rest of the Story

This is the conclusion of the high-profile murder in the family of my 2nd great-grandaunt, Delight Adams Benham. The first post begins with my explaining my love of the name of Delight, and how I wanted to write a story about her. I was very curious as to why her stepsons were not mentioned in the will. So with a little time on my hands, and before I knew it, I was reading about a murder in the family of her deceased husband, Franklin Benham of Batavia, New York. Not just any murder, but one that happened to a very wealthy newlywed 20-year-old, and everybody in the state was reading and talking about it.

Follow-up for Howard C. Benham and his family:

“As for the motive for the crime, it was said that (Howard) Benham desired to be free from his wife, not only that he might inherit $30,000 that she possessed, but that he might marry a young woman with whom he was said to be desperately in love.”

Howard was found not guilty in June 1900 and tried to put his life in order. He desperately wanted to be in vaudeville and had signed a contract. The show was canceled because there were too many protests in Buffalo against him. Other headlines state, he moved to Cleveland and tried to recover control of his wife’s property from his step-father-in-law. In January 1901, Howard “reported married in Indianapolis to millionaire, Esther (Estelle) Crum.” The new Mrs. Benham says she fell in love with Howard from a picture during the trial. On June 27, 1901, a paper reported he (Howard) was ill in Ohio with Typhoid fever, and it was reported two weeks later that he died in Columbus, Ohio, and was buried back home in Byron, New York.

The story continues to be sad, for his (Howard's) property went to the lawyers, not to his very young orphaned son.

Martin C. Benham (Howard's father):

Howard’s father, Martin C. Benham had his own problems. And headlines as well.  Martin moved in with the young couple, Florence and Howard, and was hired to handle their finances and to be the guardian of Florence. Everything seems to be fine, until after the murder and the arrest of his son in January 1897.

Per the New York Times, March 20, 1897, “Batavia, N.Y., March 19.—Martin C. Benham, father of Howard, the alleged wife murderer, made three attempts to take his own life yesterday. Mr. Benham has been gradually breaking down mentally since his son’s arrest.”

Per the Democrat and Chronicle, Sept. 29, 1897, of Rochester, NY. – The headline: “Contest Over the Account of Martin C. Benham as Guardian.” He was in court because of possible misuse of the money, as there was a shortage in his accounts of $2,449.12.

The headlines from March 1897 to January 1901 ran from, “Mind said Failing,” “Condition improved,” “Not insane,” “Health now excellent,” “Mentally confused,” “Declared insane,” “Home,” “Ill,” “in Jail on Contempt, then released on health reasons,” “Worse – Confined to bed,” “To be Freed Today,” “Has pneumonia – now at home,” and four days later “Died.” 

Other Family Members:

Howard’s second wife eloped with a Cincinnati lawyer, per paper dated 12-7-1903.

Mrs. Martin C. Benham (Howard’s mother) died in December 1911.

All of Howard’s sisters died young, all three under 35 years of age.

The murder, trials, and deaths had to have affected everybody in the family. Delight Benham was only alive for a year and a half after the murder, and I believe she was well aware of what was going on.
