The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.
Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.
Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

A Huge Age Difference and 6 Maiden Names
Every once in a while, I came across a record that demands a second look. The recent one was the 1940 census for Charleston, Orleans, Vermont showing Alexander Westover age 72 and Mary E. Westover age 26, as husband and wife. Naturally, I thought it was an error and I needed to investigate.
Seeing that Alexander was married, now 72, was a surprise, since he was a widower in 1930.
Their marriage record shows Alexander Westover, age 62, No. of marriage/ second, married 14 Feb. 1934 at Richford, Franklin, VT, to Mary Elizabeth Clair, age 19, her first marriage. However, they managed to be married six years, with one child by the time of the 1940 census. Why did a 62 year old marry a 19 year old?
Alexander and Mary Elizabeth had Lawrence Alexander Westover born Aug. 24, 1935 at Belvidere, Vt. Listed parents were Alexander Westover age 66 and engineer, born Berkshire, Vt. and Mary Elizabeth Clair age 20 born Sheldon, Vt. (Note, he aged 4 years and she just 1 year.)
His previous marriage, #2 from Vermont Vital Records 1871 to 1908 (located at NEHGS*). Roll #445. Pg. 935. Alexander Weston, [sic] as typed, then hand written as Westover was 31, a laborer of Jay, VT, No. of Marriage 2 (Divorced) married Emma Ruby Bell on May 8, 1906 at Jay, VT. Per Roll #299 Emma was age 18, b. Jay, VT. Notice he was divorced by 31 and married an 18 year old. Emma died in 1928.
Marriage #1 to Ethel Davis was before 1906 and I have no record for the marriage or when it ended, but they did have children from this union.
Why did marry such young girls? Maybe Alexander was from a dysfunctional family, and had a thing for younger wives. I also wonder what was going on with his mother as well. Why did the majority of his siblings not know their mother's maiden name? For example, 6 of the 13 children didn't know the correct maiden name. The mother Orilla is always listed as being married to Moses Westover, however her maiden name could be any one of the six below.
Marriage of Alexander's siblings who state their mother was:
Ida married 1878, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Booth
John Alfred married 1889, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Burnham
Rufus married 1893, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Burnham
Frank married 1914, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla King
Alice married 1932, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Burman
Alexander married 1934, parents: Moses Westover and Orilla Bonney
The 1953 Death record for Alexander, parents: Moses Westover and Ovillan Bonneau. The death record for his mother, shows her name as: Orilla Hepsibah Bonneau Westover in 1897.

Have you looked lately?
We have all heard of Find A Grave, and most of us have used it. Many of us have taken photos and entered them into that site. And because of our efforts, there are now 90 million grave records online, all searchable for FREE. I noticed this yesterday, and since I use that site every few days, it must have just turned 90. **
From the Find A Grave site:
Find the graves of ancestors, create virtual memorials, add 'virtual flowers' and a note to a loved one's grave, etc. |
• Search 90 million grave records |
• Search for a cemetery |
• Add burial records |
• View recently added names |
• Stroll through our online cemetery |
• Join the Find A Grave Community |
• Top 50 Contributors |
• Link To Find A Grave |
• Surname index |
The majority of my searches are positive finds, but the one below has me a bit confused with the three entries for the same person, in two different towns and different cemeteries. Since they aren't far from me, I hope to make a winter visit to find the correct one. My post for tomorrow is on this Edmund Goodenow's family. He was my 9th great-granduncle.
Goodenow, Capt Edmund b. 1610 d. Apr. 5, 1688 | North Cemetery Wayland Middlesex County Massachusetts, USA |
Goodenow, Capt Edmund 87227301 b. 1611 d. Apr. 5, 1688 | North Cemetery Wayland Middlesex County Massachusetts, USA |
Goodenow, Capt Edmund b. Apr. 11, 1611 d. Apr. 5, 1688 | New Town Cemetery Sudbury Middlesex County Massachusetts, USA |
Follow-up. Midge Frazel told me they were buried at the North Cemetery in Wayland.
** While I was working with FindAGrave today, December 7, 2012, the total went to 91 million grave records.
** The total is now 92 million grave records as of January 1, 2013!
** The total is now 93 million grave records as of January 22, 2013!

Palmer, Daisy, Lowell and a Poem
For Bill West's Fourth Great Genealogy Poem Challenge I have decided to enter a poem I recently discovered while doing Google searches for a man with the first name of Palmer, a girl named Daisy and the location of Lowell (not the Lowell, MA where I live), but Lowell, Indiana. My key words were Palmer Cross, Daisy, Lowell Indiana.
Palmer Cross is the father of Daisy, and I have the Cross surname traced to Peter Cross, born 1650 in Windsor, Connecticut. Every once in a while you get lucky doing these searches, as I was with the discovery of a good obituary with a lovely poem. Below is the poem written in Mrs. Palmer's obituary. The obituary provided good family information, and the poem was an added bonus.
"Thy loving eyes are lately closed,
Thy weary form is well reposed
In dreamless sleep;
Thy furrowed face how saintly fair
Beneath its crown of silvery hair,
Thy rest, how deep.
O, tired feet your race us run,
O, weary hands you work is done,
Your task complete;
For thou hast won thy glorious crown
And layest all thy burdens down
At Jesus' feet.
Be no repining here expressed,
May no rude grief disturb thy rest,
Thou sainted one;
Thy many years of service past,
Thou enterest into rest at last,
God's will be done.
We'll miss from thine accustomed place
Thy well known form, thy patient face,
But He knows best:
Thy home is now beyond the skies,
And even thy children's children rise,
And call thee blest.
When we have run our destined race
Somewhere in God's appointed place,
We'll meet again;
Though wearing robes of righteousness,
And dwelling with the Prince of Peace,
We'll know thee then."

Obituary and Poem was for:

We Do Things Differently, Meeting Up With Another Researcher
I was determined to stay longer to see what else they had and to talk to an older man looking at books in the stacks. I wondered if he was a genea-blogger because I recognized his flip-pal on the table. What a delightful conversation we had, and no he didn't even know what blogs were. But he knew about doing genealogy, the old fashioned way. And, he owned the flip-pal, something I don't have.
When it was time to leave, I assumed my husband would want to check out the cemetery, knowing that his ancestors were buried there. Nope, no interest whatsoever! What kind of genealogist is he? This is perplexing, since he loves going with me on my searches.
So there we have it, he doesn't plan, doesn't look around in the library and doesn't do cemeteries. Yep, we do things differently. But he was happy. I imagine a number of people are like him.

Canals, Gate Houses and Mills, Photos taken in 2012.
Lowell High School, on both sides of the canal.
I wonder if the plan for the Signature Bridge was on the drawing board back in 2012.
This past week, I've seen 12 large mills, numerous gate houses (not all shown above) and many canals. Unfortunately, I've taken too photos to post here. A large number of the mills have been converted into business space and housing. I used to work in one of the mills, at the Boott Mills complex twice. The first job was a part-time one for Christmas, and it was before the mill was renovated. The second job was after the renovation.

A River Runs Through It
I want to thank all of you who have been looking at my blog for the past three days. I wish you could tell me if you are in a class learning about Lowell. I think this is the case because it is apparent that the over 500 hits in two days have all been for Lowell. You've looked at everything from the obituary listings, the Bette Davis House, and all my Lowell photos, each item was looked at at least six times. But no hits for the cemetery photos. Would any of you like me to take photos of something else? You can write me at BarbaraPoole@Gmail.com. In the meantime, I will work on photos of the canals and mills for tomorrow. Thank you.
