The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Bits of News

The May issue of Smart Computing has at least three articles that might be of interest to genealogists. I have mentioned this magazine several times in the past.  Nobody knows more than me, how expensive they can be, and I subscribe to quite a number including a fair share of genealogy publications. I have always thought that if you want to read it, and don't want to subscribe, just check out your library.
This issue has "To Tweet Or Not to Tweet?" a three page article, "Gmail Goodies," and "Roll Your Own Blog with Tumblr."

You would think that with all the magazines I subscribe to, I would be smarter in the technology aspect of computers.  I even had my first computer class at the Pentagon, no less, many years ago. So far back, that we had a tour of their computer center and the computers were five feet tall or higher! But, it was genealogy that interested me, and now the two have messed! Amazing how that turned out.

New England Marriages Prior to 1700, my favorite reference book

Many people researching their early New England ancestors usually end up using the book, New England Marriages Prior to 1700 by Clarence Almon Torrey.  It was published in 1985 and reprinted many times. I have sourced it for over 1,000 names, and because of this fact, I thought it would be a wonderful reference book to discuss.  There are 1,009 pages listing  "37,000 couples who resided in colonial New England during its first eight decades" and Mr. Torrey used "more than 2,500 works thus indexed."  Pretty impressive.

From the green book, I scanned several KELSEY names to use as an example, one showing the marriage information for DANIEL KELSEY and MARY STEVENS. Unfortunately, the book doesn't show where the information came from.

I am not sure if anybody ever wondered where this information came from or how it was put together.  Well, I don't know exactly, because I've never asked, but will ask the next time I go to Boston.  But I do know this. There a 12 volume set of books all with entries by Mr. Torrey. They are not the originals, but copies of his originals. Below is a photo of these well-worn books on the top level in the library at the New England Historic and Genealogical Library.
An example from one of the original (copied) books is the DANIEL KELSEY name and one line shows he married MARY STEVENS. If there were ten Daniel Kelsey's married to different women, they would each have a separate entry.  The middle column shows the marriage date, and the third column shows the town, and below that are the books used to obtain that marriage record. Great if you are in the library, but what if you aren't?  By the way, they are very heavy and hard to Xerox. I used my camera.

Another example is below.

Next to the copied original books is another series of seven books (see above, the green books). This series contains much of the information found in the New England Marriages Prior to 1700, with updates and all the sources, like those found in the large original books. This is wonderful for researchers. I am not sure if you can purchase these, but at the same time the books were published, a CD was also made available to researchers. I bought one immediately (although it doesn't work with my Vista now, thanks to technology). From home, I could put in a name and the index would show up, from there it was easy to find the KELSEY name and all the resources. An example of that page is below and is exactly like that shown in the green book.

Based on the information above, I now know that Mr. Torrey used a Kelsey genealogy, The American Genealogist, and a Keeler-Wood genealogy. These books are exactly what was shown in the original entry by him.  From this information, I simply go to the books and look up the page. And hopefully, there will be much more information with authentic sources. This is genealogy research at its easiest!

Thank you to MyHeritage.com for the Award

On May 12th I received a huge surprise, that of being listed in MyHeritage.coms Top 100 Genealogy Sites for 2010. The news came early in the day, and I spent the entire day in shock. Every blog I’ve written has come easily, but this one is difficult. I am not an award type person, not competitive and haven't accepted any of the 23 awards I've received in the past from fellow bloggers. That being said, I would be a poor sport for not accepting this one, so from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. Somebody was kind enough to suggest my Life From the Roots, and through their voting, I was selected to be among the 99 others, many of whom I already follow and feel as though I know personally.

Please visit MyHeritage.com, the home page for the company, and the quick link to the list to the blogs at MyHeritage.coms Top 100 Genealogy Sites. In their letter to me, they stated the following: “Our expert judging panel has set three criteria:

1) high quality content;
2) originality in topic choice, approach and design; and
3) frequently updated content.”

Albany Tulip Festival then another time we drove to Normans Kill (River) where early Ten Eycks lived.

3
Albany Tulip Festival was with an AAA day trip by bus.

Getting into Albany was a breeze, no cars on the highway!

`A couple of weeks after the Tulip Festival, we went to Normans Kill in New York to see where my early Dutch ancestors, the Ten Eycks, lived along the river of Normans Kill.

A Makeover for a 1660 No. Andover, Massachusetts Cemetery

The below cemetery has been visited, by me at least 15 times, as it is rather close by, and since I have ancestors there, my husband and I like to stroll through it.  The first two photos show what we always saw, lots of trees. Imagine our surprise earlier this year, when we saw that a number of trees had been removed.  Recently, we returned for another view of the cemetery.  This is where the Anne Dudley Bradstreet memorial is.  Note: Wikipedia's information for Andover has a lot of historical information as well as an impressive list of well-known former residents.

In June 2014, I communicated with a person from the North Andover Historical Society about my doing a post about their society. One of the most useful things I received was a A Digital Guide to the Old Burial Ground on Academy Road. (Scroll to the bottom for the database with photos and map.)

"I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan"

Last month, I received a wonderful email from Terry Kott, part of which stated, "I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In the course of my own family research, I was searching through old books at my grandfather's farm outside of Fulton, Michigan and came across an old ledger that I believe belonged to Stephen Eldred of Climax, Michigan. It covers the years 1837 to 1850+.  In it are entries for a couple of families in your genealogy, KELSEY and SCRAMBLING.

1) George Scrambling for the years-1837, 1838, 1840, 1841
2) Silas Kelsey-1838, 1839
3) Timothy Kelsey-1838, 1839
4) George Schrambling-1840, 1842
5) David Scrambling-1841, 1842, 1843, 1844
6) George Schramling-1844, 1845, 1846

The entries are very interesting to look at and see what transactions, what life was like back then. I thought that you would like copies of each page for each one of your family members. It has a page for Debt (What the person owed), and a page for Credit (What the person was owed).
p.s. -- I found you on Rootsweb, and then found your blog."  In a subsequent email, he mentioned there were also pages for DANIEL LAY and ALEXANDER FARMER...my two direct lines! Alexander Farmer is a "brick wall" of mine, so I did a lot of cheering.  Alexander's roots are my 15 year old "brick wall" and here was something concrete, other than a few censuses. These are the first ledger pages for anybody in my family, and now I have two, so they are indeed very meaningful. I am not a mother, but if I were, this would be a wonderful gift.

Terry did all that for me and we aren't even related!  I can see that the blog is helping me with connections and I'm glad Terry had the initiative to write me and the time to send the 18 scanned images from the ledger that Sunday afternoon.

Alexander purchased the following items during those years: wheat, wool, port, use of a horse for 1 day, corn, and one fat sheep.  His work included: husking corn, shearing sheep, threshing and hewing.  The first entries were for January 1843 and the last was for March 1846. A nice snapshot into their lives for a few years.  Fortunately, I was able to place all the above individuals too.

Note: Terry mentioned that he let Western Michigan University Archives copy the Ledger.

Surname Saturday -- BARNES of Connecticut (5 generations)

The Barnes family is another old Connecticut line and I am showing five generations of my direct line. In my tree there are 73 Barnes, most lived in Hartford County, Connecticut.  My direct lines are in All Caps.

At the left, if the Barnes Chapel in Bristol, Connecticut, designed by my grandfather, Earle K. Bishop in the 1920s. The Wikipedia site for Bristol provided some interesting tidbits, one was: "it was once a leader in chrysanthemum production and still holds an annual "Mum Festival." Since I need the roots, I think I see a trip in the future to visit the Festival, several museums and a cemetery or two.

This report was updated on October 12, 2014.
