The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Somebody Answered my Plea to Help Solve A Brick Wall, and I Gladly Paid Him!

One nice thing about asking for help, even if you have to pay for it, is it sure saves a lot of time. And, in my case, I got more than I bargained for when John, a professional genealogist and historian responded to my request to help solve one of my top ten brick walls, see HERE. His first email to me stated, "I have found additional records for her (Elizabeth) (birth and baptism) and her parents, including her mother's identity," I knew instantly I wanted to learn more. He went over and above what I asked for by finding an additional three generations of ancestors. I believe he sent me seven deeds and so much more information! Not bad for a cold March weekend in 2014.

When I asked if he felt he had the right parents, his reply, "Yes, I feel I have the parents. To start, I am attaching a deed from Essex County Registry of Deeds, Vol. 98, p. 133. It is for 30 acres being sold in March 1748. No buildings were mentioned on the lot, but William was listed as a yeoman. Note that the land is on the Saugus River; it would have been in current Lynnfield (then part of Lynn), near current Wakefield line (then part of Reading). Noter also references to the lot bordering lands of Benjamin Wiley and land of a widow Wiley. Finally, William Johnson's wife, Elizabeth Johnson, also signs, acknowledging that she was giving up any right of dower in the land (this was standard practice), signing with her mark, suggesting that she could not write."

Among things I learned, I want to share with you. He wrote about a single woman using Mrs. before she married, and the usefulness of finding deeds.

"As Elizabeth was listed as "Mrs." when she was married, it was of course quite possible that she was a widow, but we now know that Johnson was her maiden name, and there is no evidence that she married a man named Johnson prior to the Mead marriage. I have seen "Mrs." used in many marriage records of the period, even though the person had not been married prior to the entry, so this was actually not unusual."

"Deeds are not as yet used that much by people doing genealogy, but they are a valuable source that professionals will more often consult. If nothing else, the one I sent yesterday documents that William Johnson's occupation was a yeoman (farmer) and that Elizabeth signed with an "X" (her mark), so she likely could not write. The description places their land on the Saugus River, near a saw mill and adjoining land of Benjamin Wiley. I will be sending some more deeds and add some comments. You may also find them difficult to relate to, but the deeds serve as key evidence for being able to attribute who Elizabeth's parents were [Benjamin and Mary (Nichols) Wiley]."

I highly recommend this professional, and if you would like his name, please write me. I believe he took a personal interest in this case, and just based on the following information I'm sharing I think you'll agree. Obviously, he didn't just find me the parents of Elizabeth.

"I wondered if the Pooles of Reading were connected to you. Fun when different lines end up connecting.

Books I consulted regarding John Wiley and family in Reading included:

Loea Parker Howard. Ancient Redding in Massachusetts Bay Colony [1944], pp. 44-45.
“JOHN WILEY
“Sergt. John Wiley was an early settler on land in
the Woodville district of Wakefield. The men of this [44]
family took a deep interest in military affairs and were
officers in all of the early companies. His descendants
settled in Stoneham and Lynnfield, also.”

Lilley Eaton. Genealogical History of the Town of Reading, Mass.(1874), pp. 125-26.
Wiley, John, one of the earliest settlers; lived in "Little World," now
called Woodville. He died probably in 1672. His wife, whose [125]
name was Elizabeth, d. 1662. Chil. : John (perhaps);
Benjamin (perhaps), who m. 1707, Mary Nichols; Elizabeth, b. 1649;
Timothy, b. 1653; Susanna, b. 1655, and m. 1678, John Damon;
Sarah, b. 1658.”

Savage vol. 4, p. 550 only says of John Wiley “Reading 1640, or at least an early sett.”

Curious, I thought I read in Howard that he likely had been from Ipswich. I guess my memory is slipping—I saw something and quickly checked Ipswich VR (finding nothing), but I failed to make a notation. Eaton certainly did more study of the Reading families than I, so he may have had a reason for thinking the most likely candidate for Benjamin’s father was immigrant John. My own instinct would be to look for possibility of Benjamin being a grandson of John.

Deeds are on microfilm at NEHGS, where I used to look them up. Copies are now uploaded in FamilySearch, but they are not as yet searchable. Originals are now at the Massachusetts Archives in Boston. I downloaded a few others if you are interested in some more."

Since this post is longer than I expected, I just posted the descendant, and it may be seen HERE.

Brick Walls of My Readers on Surname Saturday

Permission given to use clip art by Bio Organics

Over the years, I have received hundreds of requests for help, I would say half of them I am able to help, which brings quite a bit of satisfaction. However, the others, if after my suggestions don't pan out, the person is usually left with a brick wall. This past week, I received two such requests and suddenly thought, why not post their letters. I have my own Brick Walls on a blog post, why not post theirs. I'll either use their entire letter or parts of it with pertinent information. If anybody has information on these unknown people, please write me and I will put you in touch with the appropriate person.

In addition, if anybody wants to write a piece on their brickwall, please do. Just send them to me, and I'll post here. This will be like a query board. Let's see what happens.

#1 "Hello Barbara,
It is me again. I had contacted you concerning the Lowrey / Grinnell Families and your help was so wonderful. I have followed your blogs ever since and find them so interesting. Again, thank you for all of your work!

Well, in reading the last few weeks, I noticed your connection to Momence, Illinois and the Hess family of the region. I've hit a stone wall with my great-great-great grandfather Andrew G. Hess who lived in  Iroquois County Illinois (near Momence). He was supposedly born in 1830 in Pennsylvania although I found in the 1860 Census his birthplace was listed "unknown". He was a drayman and married Sarah Sapp (born 1836 in Illinois, the daughter of Asa and Allie (Thomas) Sapp. Her nickname was Sallie.) The couple had children Ally (1854), Phebe (1856), LAVINA SEREPTA -my line (1859), twins Calvin and Benjamin (1866), Samuel (1868) and Andrew E. (1871). Andrew was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery when he died in Watseka, Illinois July 13, 1884( Find-a-Grave) but no mention of Sallie's burial there.

I was just wondering if in your years vast research, if you ever came across mention of him, his parents or his family? Hess is a very popular name since a whole German part of the  country seems to have used this but the geographical location of the family and the early date of living in the same area may be coincidental  or they may actually tie in somewhere to the Scramlin - Hess Family that you have researched.

Thanks again for all your efforts!

Sincerely,
Bill"

#2 "Hi Barbara,
I have started researching my Westover genealogy. My father was Orville Francis Westover (1915-1992). My grandfather was Thomas Francis Westover (born in NY in April 1885 or 1887). My great-grandfather was Stephen Westover. According to the 1900 Census, he was living in Oneonta, Ostego, NY. He was born in Canada in October 1857. He had been married to Josephine Shortsleeve Westover (nickname "Rina"?) for 22 years. Josephine was born in May 1861 in New York. Their children are Thomas, May, Della, Harry, Arthur, Roy, and Reva. There is one other child that I don't know the name of. Both Thomas and Stephen were boilermakers for the railroad and the family moved frequently.

I am wondering if this Stephen Westover might be the Stephen that is on your family tree (born 1859 in Canada, son of Orange Westover). Do you have any suggestions on how to figure out if these are the same people?

Thanks for your help!
Nancy Westover S."

Do you Have Ellsworth in your Tree?

Sue from New Zealand wrote on October 10th about her ancestor, Edgar Alvah Ellsworth who married Deborah Wilkins as his first wife. I had him married only to Catherine Primmerman, so I was happy for the correction. Her line apparently went from Canada to England to New Zealand. And, speaking of corrections, Sue read my post about my finding 22 cemetery stones in Canada, and I had referred to them as my 22 direct descendants instead of ancestors! For over two years, people have seen that error!

This is not my direct line, however I have a lot of Primmermans. If anybody has this line, or knows who Edgar's parents were, I can put you in contact with her. Thank you for any help.

Is He a Black Sheep Too?

The Drummer Boy
Over a week has passed since I wrote “Wintonbury NO Bloomfield, Connecticut,” where I discussed my "Brick Wall." I compiled a list of places to contact and books to read, but it didn’t get me a step closer to finding out who John Adams’ parents were.

The day after my blog posted, I received an email from the historian at the Wintonbury Historical Society, he had seen my blog. I had every intention to contact the Society, but he was quicker. He said, "You apparently took the correct steps in searching in Windsor for folks before 1835 when Wintonbury was a church parish made up of folks from sections of WINdsor, FarmingTON, and SimsBURY. The folks therein successfully petitioned the state legislature at that time (1835) to incorporates as a TOWN and such request was granted. Folks you are seeking before that time are in the town records of the Mother town, mostly Windsor."

I inquired about a book I wanted to see, From Wintonbury to Bloomfield and fortunately he had it, looked up a few names for me, but nothing clicked. Nice of him and it saved me a step and some time.

He also gave me the link to Connecticut State Library holdings. Of the 16 hits for Wintonbury, there was only one I was really interested in, it was a manuscript of 11 documents, [Certificates of transfer from Wintonbury Parish.] Quickly, I dashed of an email to the Reference Librarian for information. Within hours, I had a response from the librarian and I indicated I would prefer the documents scanned in JPEG, rather than PDF or hard copy. To this, she replied, “We just started providing this service so it is a little clunky at this point!” Well, I understood the language, but thought it funny that they were just beginning this service. They don’t use credit cards yet, and she said they would send me an invoice. The images were readable, but not useful to me, so I’m only out $8.50 for 22 copies.

I saw a total of 14 books, either in person at the New England Historic and Genealogical Society’s Library (NEHGS) or online by using the Family History Books (Advance Search) at the www.FamilySearch.org site. My key words were Wintonbury + Adams.

I had mentioned the condition of the Old Wintonbury Cemetery in my earlier post, but I see I was just there at the wrong time. While looking at sites with Wintonbury information, I came across Grave Addition, maintained by Beth, who lives in Ohio and is on the Association For Gravestone Studies (on the Board of Trustees). I went through her Wintonbury site but didn't see anything for Adams or his in-laws, Drake or Smith. What a great web site she has, why not check it out, see her different locations, and read about her. She wrote, "The Old Wintonbury Cemetery was established in 1736, and it was in use until 1933. The cemetery is full of old gravestones. There are many old red sandstone monuments with beautiful carvings and interesting epitaphs. Most of the gravestones are in excellent condition. The cemetery is very well maintained." Obviously, I went the day before the grass was to be cut!

What are my next steps? At this point, I'll probably move on to another ancestor, after looking at records in Windsor, as suggested by the historian. My recent research was using online sources, going to a library and the field trip to the town 100 miles from me. Years ago, I did a more detailed search, looking at possible wills and going to the Connecticut State Library to look at the Barbour slips in person.

Note: Four different people, three from different lines and generations have all heard that this John Adams “was a descendant of a 'blacksheep' branch of President John's family." Since he doesn’t want to be found, I believe he was too.

Wintonbury NO Bloomfield, Connecticut

A "Brick Wall" of 15 years is long enough, and I felt it was time for me to try and knock it down. Why it is so difficult to solve? I am not just looking for a John Adams, I am looking for his town also, a town no longer in existence. Last year, I was able to get one generation back, and, thanks to my cousin, found the above John buried in Elba, Genesee Co., New York. Now, who were his parents?

From the beginning. all of four years ago, I discovered that my ancestor, John Adams married Hannah Smith in Wintonbury, Connecticut. How did I know? It was from a deposition in his Revolutionary War Pension & Bounty Land Application Files, Revolutionary War Pension Records.  Series: M804  Roll: 12.  File: W23415 (Waltham, MA, viewed Aug. 12, 2008), "He married August 15, 1790, in the Parish of Wintonbury, Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, Hannah Smith, who was born in January, 1771."

I had learned that even though Wintonbury wasn't on the map, Bloomfield, Connecticut was. Before I contact the historical society, I decided to take a ride to the town one quiet hot Sunday. That morning everything was closed, and I enjoyed the quiet and abundant parking spaces for my frequent stops for photo taking.

My ancestors were in this town in 1796. John Adams didn't move to Genesee Co., New York until 1812.

After seeing the parcel of land with the three buildings belonging to the Historical Society, we drove to the center of Bloomfield, since Wintonbury changed its name to Bloomfield in 1835.

There was more to see, so on to the town green and then locate the Old Wintonbury Cemetery, which I felt would provide a wealth of information...I was ready to go cemetery hunting, locating all the Adams and Smiths I could find.

Although I haven't solved my Brick Wall as to who John Adams' parents were, I am learning a lot about the town. These photos show you better than I could ever explain. In the next post, I'll list all the sources I've found online, what information I could use, and what I plan on doing to continue my research.

The booklet, Images of America Bloomfield, by the Wintonbury Historical Society shows some images of the town and provides history.
Bloomfield Village Green.

 Old Wintonbury Cemetery, below.
My plans for tombstone searching fell apart once I saw the tall grass and the condition of the cemetery. And, with the high temperature and humidity, I didn't mind spending time there. Maybe another time.

What did it say?

Almira was Adopted

Almira Richardson, my 3rd great-grandmother was adopted, between her birth in 1798 and marriage in 1820. Although I don't know anything about her family, there is a marriage record stating Almira was the adopted daughter of JOHN BRYAN. Fortunately, I found quite a bit about her adopted family from a church record, and that is presented below. I'm hoping to find more information to solve this brick wall, for instance; who her parents were, what happened to them and did Almira have siblings. Perhaps somebody from the RICHARDSON or the BRYAN family will provide a clue.
