My Lexington, Massachusetts House Then. and A Few Years ago AND NOW 2023

My family moved into this Lexington, Massachusetts house in 1954. This was after living in California for 9 years then two towns in Connecticut. When we settled here, I was enrolled in my 4th fourth grade! We lived here for eight years, then a month before my 12th grade, we moved to another town. Over the years, I often drove by this house and often took photos, as seen below. I remember the mortgage was $90.00 a month. I have two old photos to show a little bit of comparison in the kitchen. Fast forward to 2023 when I stopped by and met the new owners who gave me a tour.

In January 2020, my husband and I went by and took the above picture. And it was after this, I decided to google the address for any type of information. Surprisingly, it was just sold on December 30, 2019! And, there were 30 photos online! What a difference 60 years makes. Even though there were a lot of changes, I could still remember how it used to look. The below photos were taken by a real estate company.

The coats are in the phone and coat room. The door on the right is to the bathroom. The kitchen unit is exactly what we used. My two old photos were dated 1956 and 1958.

Fast forward to September 2023. I had thought many times to stop by and give the new owners three old photocopies. The house is not out of my when when I go twice a year to Lahey Medical Center in Lexington. On this particular Sunday, it was a mild sunny September day. As I approached the house, my nerves disappeared, so I parked and went to ring the bell, and when a nice-looking man answered,  talked as quickly as I could so he wouldn't think I was selling something. My photos were in my hand and I simply said, "I used to live his about 60 years ago, and I thought you might enjoy seeing these pictures." Well, his wife heard me and quickly came to the door to meet me and see the photos. The rest is history. We chatted a good hour and they insisted on showing me what they had done to the house, and it didn't look anything like what I had just posted. Quite a few walls were torn down, the stairs to the attic were moved to another part of the 2nd floor, and the list went on and on. The backyard is completely done over. His one regret was they couldn't keep the china cabinet, the contractor didn't like it.

I'm in awe with all this, and as we stood at the front door, for me to leave, I said, if you ever have to downsize, you'll have a big project. To which they said, they had just done it in their previous house. They offered me to take photos, but I declined.

 

If Only All Cemeteries Would Do This

For several years, I have been going to the Old Burying Ground in Lexington, Massachusetts to try and locate a few cemetery stones of individuals related to me. It has always been a challenge to find them because no updated map with a listing of names was available. The FindAGrave.com was of no help either.

Two years ago, this month, I was told by a cemetery clerk that a listing of names and maps was in the works, so I called about every six months, for an update. (You can read about that in one of the posts below.) Today was the day I was going to call again, but before I did, I fortunately did a little checking around on the internet. Wow, what a wonderful surprise...Lexington has done a great job putting together an  Old Burying Ground brochure with annotated map (pdf, prints on 11"x 17" paper)! The document is very large print rather small, but I've no complaints.

After reviewing the list of names and looking at the cemetery map, I called my contact at the cemetery and thanked her, since she worked on the project, along with others. Their cemetery site, with other information, will be very useful to the many who want to find out if their ancestors were buried there.

Is This About Six Deaths of the Children, My New Relatives OR Research Problems -- Tombstone Tuesday

In the ideal world of tombstone hunting in an old cemetery, I should do a thorough research a head of time on who I was looking for and have an idea who else is buried there as well. However, in this case, I came across the cemetery stone by accident and didn't know the 6 Childs children were related to me. All 6 died within weeks of each other, so I wanted to post the tombstone because it's an interesting stone and sad because of all the deaths. Their stone photos were taken in two different years, in three visits. (Photos below with transcription.)

When I began this post last year, I thought some of the photos of other grave stones could be related to the children and later discovered two to be their parents. It seemed that each subsequent trip provided another family member to them and to me.

Without a doubt, I've lost a lot of time making these trips, when two visits should have been enough. Even if I didn't know who they were, the above Childs and Cutlers were buried in the same area, and that was a clue. I now need to return for a fourth trip because I see that the children's great-grandmother, Abigail Dewey Cutler is also buried there.  Much time could have been saved, if I had used FindAGrave for the Childs children first and looked at all the family members. (On the link above, you'll see that at one time, the long tombstone was almost flat on the ground.)

The six children of Abijah Childs and Sarah Cutler were buried in this plot located in Y^e Old Burying Ground in Lexington, Massachusetts. They died within a three week period between August 19 and September 6, 1778. The parents were buried behind them under the two tall cemetery markers, seen in above photo and below), photos taken Oct. 17, 2015. (Photo too dark, so I returned last week for a better picture. Summer photo too light.)

Tribute to my Childhood Best Friend, Mary Bea Lingane of Lexington, MA

I recently found out that my former best friend passed away. I contacted her brother and he was kind enough to write and give me the details as well as other bits of information about the family. I am posting this in case anybody in cyberspace happens to google her name. I would like them to find this blog post and read about Mary Bea.

There aren't enough adjectives to describe the wonderful qualities of my former best friend. Smart, very pretty, talented, fun, nice and loyal. She and I were like glue soon after I moved 2 houses away from her in Lexington, Massachusetts in 1954. There were no other children our age, so we shared our early days together on the weekend and after school. We often took the bus to Boston, joined a very active Girl Scout troop (in my blog post about My Life as a Girl Scout, I wrote her name hoping she'd see it one day), and did what we could together because our stay-at-home mothers didn't work nor drive. She went to a private catholic school for several years, but we went to the same high school. There, she took college courses, went to college, became a teacher (at the same school my mother taught), left teaching, took more college courses, had a few different jobs, her last was about 30 years of working in several departments at Northeastern University, one as the Director of Personnel and her last position as Executive Assistant to the Provost.

During our almost 60 years, we often kept in contact the best we could but hadn't spoken to each other in maybe 10 years. Years after college, she bought a house with her boyfriend in Arlington and invited me for a weekend visit. I then moved to Virginia and lived there for 20 years, but saw her a few times on my return...always meeting up in Lexington. During one lunch, she spent a good deal of time talking about her very good friend, Candy, who had just passed away. I am doing the same for her, although more publicly. Mary came to my mother's funeral in 1990. And, I called her after I heard her mother passed. Soon, our Christmas cards stopped being sent, her postcards from afar, birthday as well. Later, I always knew how busy she was at Northeastern, and didn't want to bother her....I wish I had.

On November 22, 2015, I gathered a stack of Boston Globe newspapers to dispose of. I hadn't read any, but on a whim, something told me to flip through the obits (I never do that, as a matter of fact, especially this time as I could hardly see, never mind read anything because I had cataract surgery three weeks prior. Right there, on the very last bottom of one of the 4 or more full pages of obituaries was Mary's name, age, and date of death. I read it clearly. A short gasp and tears formed when I read it over and over. I called the University quite a few times, but nobody knew anything about her death. So, months later, I decided to write to her brother.

February 3, 2023, I am sharing the letter her brother wrote to me. I'm hopeful he won't mind.

"Hi Barbara. How nice to hear from you, despite the circumstances. Perhaps you know that Mary Bea was living for many years in Woburn, and had retired about a year earlier from Northeastern University where she was an administrator. Last spring and summer she started developing symptoms of headaches, vision issues and occasional falls, which turns out were the result of a brain tumor called a meningioma. Though not malignant it was in a difficult location, and last August she went in for surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Despite world-class specialists in this condition there were complications, and she never awakened from the 15 hour procedure, remaining in what was essentially a coma. As time went on our optimism gradually faded, and we finally decided to move her to hospice in early November. She was very clear in her living will under what circumstances she wished to continue her life if disabled, and it was clear that the chance of meeting that standard had been reduced to nil. She died at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, which is an excellent and caring facility. Mary Bea had no children or significant other in the last few years, and she was very generous to her nieces and nephews in her will, such that it will have significant positive impact on their lives.

We had originally planned on a Celebration of Life this spring, but various complications with that plan arose and we decided to just have a family gathering and distribution of ashes in the sea at Cathy’s vacation home in Bar Harbor.

So that is the story. Cathy and her husband John live in Topsfield, MA, and my brother Peter (and his wife, daughters and grandkids) and I live in California. I am married, have one adult son who is an engineer (like his father) in upstate New York and one son who is finishing his freshman year at George Washington University in DC. We will probably be retiring once we stop paying for college tuition!

Two quick stories. When we were in the 4th or 5th grades, I remember being on the grass in her yard talking about love, marriage and white picket fences. Then we decided to kiss each other on the lips to see what that felt like.

The other story was much later, perhaps in the 10th or 11th grade. On a whim, we decided to walk 8 miles to Harvard University to see her dad. He was an instructor or professor (I don't know), but anyway we did, and didn't tell our parents what we were going to do. Her dad was shocked, and shortly after we arrived, he drove us home. My parents punished me. Both are wonderful memories.

How to Find a Tombstone in the Old Cemetery in Lexington, MA, My Stearns / Stone for Tombstone Tuesday

This spring, I discovered I had the Stearns line, and made it my mission to see if any distant relatives were buried near where I live. As it turned out, my 8th great-grandaunt, Sarah Stearns was buried in Lexington, Massachusetts with her husband, Dea. Samuel Stone. Since I knew where the cemetery was, I thought it would be an easy find, especially since there was a photo on FindAGrave. I went two times, and couldn't find it, even with the help of my husband. Nothing looked remotely like the FAG photo, I think the sun or shadow was the problem.

I called the cemetery department to get the exact location and spoke with the cemetery supervisor, who couldn't figure out their record-keeping system (clerk on vacation), then I waited a week and called her. She explained where my stone was, so we went again and still couldn't find it. Another call to the clerk and I suggested a map of the cemetery, she had one to send me. I received it 3 weeks later, after another call to remind her. I also received a partial list showing "my names" with their grave number. Seems there are many typed lists, and each grave has a number which corresponds to the map. (Copies of map and list are shown below.) Anyway, we finally found the stones in August and the lighting was perfect, but I waited over two months to post this because I had to take a photo of the red burning bush by the rock with the words "Ye Old Burying Ground."

During my conversations with the cemetery clerk, she offered to call the Town Hall to see what the status was regarding their updating cemetery records. I mentioned I wanted to get a listing so I could put it online for readers. I was told they were working on it right now and I could call back to find out the status. I said I'd do it in six months. NOTE: I called the cemetery on September 6, 2016 and was told that the Historical Society and Cemetery department, along with a Boy Scout Troop are working on getting information put online. I will call back in February 2017.

In the meantime, I discovered a full map of the cemetery, online (yes a Lexington site), and it's below. It would have been most helpful if the clerk had just given me the Stearns and Stone cemetery numbers (38 and 39), and the town website, then I could have found the map and their location in a minute or so, from home!

Tombs are the first thing you see if you enter at the rock marker below. There are three ways to get in the cemetery. The path that begins with the rock marker; park in the cemetery lot behind the First Parish-Unitarian Church; park in the St. Brigid Church lot, left of the large rock marker. See detailed map below.

The two church parking lots are shown on the Google map below, and the path is close to the H in Harrington Rd. (I have no idea why the Cemetery isn't marked.)

I found the above map at this Site, you can see there is church parking on the left and right sides, and the path is in the middle. If you are looking for somebody in person or just want to know the grave number, call the cemetery office at 781-861-2718 and get the number of your gravestone. Then enlarge this map to see their location. Note: I suggest looking on FindAGrave first, just to be sure they were buried there. You'll have a much easier search than I had.
