The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Thomas Barnes and Family from Connecticut

The Barnes family is another old Connecticut line and I am showing five generations of my direct line. In my tree there are 73 Barnes, most lived in Hartford County, Connecticut. My direct lines are in All Caps.

At the left, if the Barnes Chapel in Bristol, Connecticut, designed by my grandfather, Earle K. Bishop in the 1920s. The Wikipedia site for Bristol provided some interesting tidbits, one was: "it was once a leader in chrysanthemum production and still holds an annual "Mum Festival." Since I need the roots, I think I see a trip in the future to visit the Festival, several museums and a cemetery or two.

Conversation -- Part 3

My letter began with, “Dear Mr. Barnes” unfortunately, I didn’t save a copy of my letter nor did the recipient. Now for the beginning. About 1996, I used a genealogy book, The Genealogy of Thomas Barnes of Hartford, Connecticut, and was so happy to discover that my ancestors were listed in the book, with a source! It was for the marriage of ESTHER BARNES and NATHANIEL BISHOP of Connecticut.

Immediately, I wrote the author a letter, since his address was printed in the book. Within days, I received a reply. It seemed he was more excited than me. Why? He was born and brought up in my home town. Even though he now lives in California, some of his family is still living here in my town in Massachusetts.

When I decided to write about the letter, his book and our meetings, I contacted him and his wonderful wife, Edna. Edna replied back, “As far as we can determine, it looks as if we first met in October 1997 at the Library. I remember when you came bouncing in all enthused. It was such a pleasure to meet you. Also, we believe that Fred has visited with you in person four or five times. He has visited with you twice by himself. In August 2009, I returned back to CA earlier than Fred so he met with you and did some additional visiting with relatives and "old" classmates. He also was able to see you when he went back to his 50th High School Class Reunion in 2001. When we both went back for his 55th High School Reunion in 2006 you met us in Andover, MA. I'm not sure what year it was that you welcomed us into your home. You were doing some remodeling but wanted to share some of your genealogy material with us at that time. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding Fred and his home town as he was "growing up".

This wonderful friendship developed because of a simple letter. In addition, Fred is also my 8^th cousin, but it feels like a 1^st cousin with both of them. They are both members of my local genealogy club, long-distance from California.

Looking Back

It was quite a surprise to be in the Top 100 Genealogy Blog list from MyHeritage.com. I must admit, it was nice, but now on to other things.

I received an Ancestors Approved Award from Lisa who writes Old Stones Undeciphered. Thank you Lisa. When I read her 1920s Beeville, Texas: Shades of the Ku Klux Klan I really woke up at 5:45 AM on a Sunday morning. I know I should be talking about the article, but I was delighted that she had photos of Beeville, Texas. I made many trips to the NARA to use the microfilm to locate a family from there and that memory is very vivid. Why did they move from Michigan to Beeville, Texas, I've often wondered.

Another email came from Brenda of Journey to the Past who wrote, "Do you have gravesite photos? This (West Leroy) cemetery is about 3 miles from where I live." Subsequent emails brought additional information and about 19 photos! She also drew a detailed map of the cemetery and indicated where my different direct line families were buried! Brenda has helped me in the past in locating a newspaper article about Yates Adams, and his murder / suicide. She may help me with obituaries too.

Lester "Les" Larrabee of Bits and Pieces sent me an email with an attachment of a Barnes tombstone. In his note, he mentioned that I didn't have that name in my Surname Saturday for the Barnes name listed that week. Lester knows I have a lot of Barnes, and that is why he sent the photo. I now have this person entered into my database, and Les gave me permission to put the picture on Find-A-Grave.

Joyce, a friend of mine who took the same Family Tree Maker class with me over four years ago knows a number of my surnames. She wrote about her ancestor, then said, "They were married in St. Armand, Quebec, Canada on February 22, 1813 and the 2 witnesses to the marriage were Abigail's father, Benjamin JOY and a AQUILA KNAP." She was right, I have that Aquila Knap in my tree. My ancestor and hers knew each other in 1813, pretty amazing.
