Canadian Resources I Use

If you are doing research in Canada, more specifically the Eastern Townships in Quebec, you might appreciate seeing my list of sites that I have frequently used. I figured after 19 years of doing research for my many lines in Missisquoi and Brome Counties in Quebec, it was time to put this together to help others. My surnames (including maiden names of wives) were: Pell, Currie / Curry, Jaquays, Johnson, Westover, Dumont, Knap, Alvord, Cross, Rosenberger, Bockus, Ten Eyck. My grandmother was born in Dunham , and 5-7 of my different lines were Loyalists from New York or Connecticut. Others were from England, Vermont and an unknown location. In 2000, I took a trip to visit where my grandmother grew up and where I once as a child spent a few days during a summer vacation at the family farm. During my September 2000 trip, I found 22 grave sites of my direct ancestors, spanning 4 generations. My ancestors were all English speaking and the research was relatively easy.

Corey, from Quebec, Canada to California -- Surname Saturday

I was very happy to hear from Ed McGowan in April, 2013, when he  located me online by using the name of Jane Elizabeth Rosenberger. Jane had married Reuben Corey, both were from Missisquoi County in Quebec, an area where many of my ancestors were from. They were his great-grandparents. Jane Elizabeth Rosenberger was my 2nd cousin 3x removed.

Reuben Corey 1838-1914 was married to Jane Elizabeth Rosenberger 1844-1902. What's unusual is they were both born in the same area in Quebec, married in Vermont and migrated to southern California, had three children there, then died in California.

The Corey line was added into my tree and perhaps this information will help somebody.

Westover, A New Branch To Me -- Surname Saturday

During the past several months, I've been working with several individuals on their lines. One was for the Westover surname. The reason Jack Westover contacted me was because he saw my RootsWeb site had over 1,000 of that surname. I was delighted when he offered to share his Amasa's lineage, since I didn't have anything more than just the name. Jack is allowing me to share and hopefully, it will help somebody. Amasa's father, Moses was my 5th great-grandfather, and was both a Revolutionary War Patriot from Massachusetts who became a Loyalist and settled in Quebec, Canada. 100 Objects, One Belonged to my Ancestor

If your ancestors lived in Quebec and spoke English, then you might be interested in online exhibit called, The Identity of English-speaking Quebec in 100 Objects. I am writing about this because Heather Darch, Curator of the Missisquoi Historical Society/Missisquoi Museum shared the information with me. Remember my ancestor's Revolutionary War Red Coat story? Well, that is one of the 100 objects. If you the Objects tab, #5, the Loyalist coat, c. 1770, scroll down for additional detailed information. She told me, "The Ten Eyck red coat has headed off to the Centre de conservation du Québec at long last. Although it was accepted for conservation ages ago, we were only given permission this past month to send it to them. It will likely be out of the collection for a year. When it returns, I will send you up-to-date images. The coat was accepted as one of the 100 significant objects of the history of English-speaking Quebec. The project called the Significant Objects for Telling Identity by the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network created a website and a DVD featuring 100 objects from across the province that reflected the diverse English-speaking culture and heritage of Quebec." I am thrilled times two over because the coat is one of the 100 objects chosen and I can't wait to hear what the experts say about it.

A little more about the exhibit all can see. The website "gives an overview of 100 objects with their 100 stories. "It is a portrait of the English-speaking communities of Quebec, in all their diversity."

"The 2011 Canada Census identified 1,058,250 persons who spoke English as their first official language rather than French. This represents 13.5% of Quebec’s total population." If you have any ancestors from Quebec, have an interest in history or just love learning about their early life, this is the perfect introduction for you. In addition, there is a timeline tab which provides historical context, and you can use your own descriptions of some of the items to incorporate into your family story."

"Since it was founded in 2000, the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network has striven to fulfill its mission of “promoting the preservation of the built, cultural and natural heritage of Quebec,” and more specifically the cultural heritage of Quebec’s diverse and geographically far-flung English-speaking communities."

Finding the Will for Will Was Great, But Frozen to Death, Not So!

Two wonderful pieces of information provided the documentation I needed to tie-up my research for William "Will" Scramlin, my 2nd cousin 3x removed. Both of these resources were free.

I last found him in the 1900 census in Harmon, Roberts, South Dakota, then the trail ran cold. That was until I searched for Will Scramlin in FamilySearch.org. Their were seven hits for William Scramlin, so it didn't take long to go through the file, but one, the Saskatchewan, Probate Estate Files, 1887-1931 Weyburn 1918 had 32 pages of legal documents, including the will and probate records for him! Apparently, he and his family were living in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. It was pure luck that these documents were scanned and put online, I would never have found them, and why would I ever think Saskatchewan.

A few days later, while still researching him, more information came to light, when I used Google News and found the newspaper, The MorningLeader - Jan 28, 1918.  The headline was HALBRITE MAN FOUND FROZEN AT MANKATO, MINN. (See below the will.)
