The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Artist at Work -- Wordless Wednesday

My grandfather, Earle K. Bishop, age about 85.

A few hours after this was posted, Carol B. Stevens of Reflections from the Fence sent me two different images of the above. In her magical way, she was able to create much sharper and nicer images of my grandfather. What a nice surprise, and thank you my friend.

Gladys, her Husband and Blogger Susan Petersen

Do you ever quickly scan posted cemetery listings and obituaries, in hopes of finding something that will help you in your search? I do, all the time, and sometimes the eye scans are very quick. A second later, I couldn't even tell you the surname or location I had just read. So, when I was doing just that, scanning through a post by Susan Petersen of Long Lost Relatives, I spotted a name and knew instantly that Rev. Roy G. Pavy was in my tree. But why is he listed in an obituary posted by Susan (of Nebraska) of her great grand-aunt since he was living in Connecticut? Further reading of Susan's blog provided the answers: her ancestor lived in Connecticut and she was buried in the same cemetery as my grandparents!

I quickly wrote Susan to tell her about Rev. Pavy then went to my file to review my information. There is no need to include his huge obituary, so I will simply say, he died 6 Jul 1967 and they had no children. His wife, Gladys and my grandfather were 2nd cousins, and each was an only child. I heard the names of Gladys and Roy mentioned frequently, and when my grandfather died, I chose to take an old photo (undated) of Gladys, shown below.
Gladys Bishop Pavy
Roy G. Pavy

In closing, I think it is important to look at all blogs which are about a person or family. You will never know what you've missed if you don't. In this case, Susan lives in Nebraska, I am in Massachusetts, yet I found a relative mentioned on her blog about a Connecticut death! Pretty neat.

ONE OF 'FORTY-NINERS' -- Sunday Obituary

From: The Bay City Tribune - March 16, 1914

WM. WESTOVER ONE OF HERE DIES SUNDAY
FORMER PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN HERE DIES IN ALAMEDA, CAL.
ONE OF 'FORTY-NINERS'

Had Distinquished Career as Active Lumberman and Banker.
____________
Older residents of Bay City will be pained to learn of the death of William Westover, which occurred in Alameda, Cal., March 15 at 5 a.m.

Mr. Westover was one of the pioneer residents of Bay City, coming here in 1864. For several years he was prominenly connected with the lumber industry, but later turned his attention to banking, being president of Second National Bank until he changed his residence to California. He built and owned the Westover block, which stood on the site now occupied by the Phoenix building, and which in its time was the principal business block in Bay City.

Gold Hunter in Forty-nine.

William Westover was born in Sheffield, Bershire county, Mass., in 1827, having passed his eighty-sixth birthday anniversary last November. His early life was passed on a farm. At the age of 22 he joined the argonauts who invaded the California gold fields in 1845, and devoted nearly two years to placer mining, at which he was fairly successful. Upon his return east he soon became interested in the lumber business, his first endeavors in this line being in Canada. It was at this time he met and married Mary D. Calver, of Simcoe, Ont., who, after more than 60 years of married life, still survives him.

During the early nineties Mr. Westover moved from Bay City to California, where he had prviously made large investments in redwood timber. For several years he engaged in lumbering near San Francisco and in the foothills of Mt. Shasta, but later he retired from lumbering and again took up the banking business, being at the time of his death at the head of two banks, one in Alameda and the other in Fruitvale.

Mr. Westover was the last survivor of his family generation. Besides his widow he leaves two sons, Delbert I. Westover of San Francisco, and William Westover Jr. of Alameda.

Note:  William Westover was my 2nd cousin, 5 times removed. I am always on the lookout for Westover ancestry, as I've over 900 of this name in my tree. Another reason for posting this is because he died in Alameda, California, and I lived there for 10 years. He was born in Massachusetts and this is where I now live.

Killingworth, Connecticut, I Have More Ancestors from Here than Anywhere Else!

Killingworth, Connecticut has one of the largest concentration of my direct ancestors, and a custom report revealed that I had 34 direct line couples married there. I have 753 source citations from the Vital Records of Killingworth!

What is special about Killingworth? When I first began the hobby, I became familiar with the name; often misspelled Killingsworth, and confused with the other town, Killingly. My mother's DAR patriot, Asher Wright, died there, and my DAR patriot, Jonathan Kilborn was married there (I was happy to find a new patriot, so I didn't have to share hers.)

I was hooked on this town when I inquired about records, then soon received quite a packet from the Killingworth town hall. An employee made copies of selected original records for me. Soon I was planning a visit, and when I went, it became my first cemetery trip, (about 2.5 hours away).

Of all the direct surnames, there are many with multiple generations, the families are:
Crane (3);
Davis (5);
Farnham (4);
Griffin (4);
Hayton (3);
Hull (4);
Kelsey (8);
Kilborn (2);
Steevens (2);
Turner (3);
Wilcoxson (3)
Wright (5)

Fortunately, there are many records for this area, and family genealogies as well. Almost every early family is related to somebody in the Hull, Kelsey or Steevens family. Knowing where your ancestors lived can help in doing research, and it helped me even solve a brick wall. There are three genealogies I constantly used:

1.  Hull, Robert E., The Ancestors & Descendants of George Hull and Thamzen Mitchell.

Page 36 "The following 'Allotment of the several inhabitants of Hammonascitt' is from page 1 of the Town Records of Killingworth.

"Thomas Smith, William Barber, Henry Farnam, William Wellman, George Chatfield, Thomas Stevens, Edward Griswold, William Heyton, Samuel Buell, John Kelsey, Robert Williams, granted, John Nuthton, granted, -- Turney, purchase John Rositer by agreement, John Miggs, granted John Shether, purchase of Jonathan Dunnin, George Sanders, granted William Stevens, Josiah Hull, Senr., Eliezer Isbel, granted, Isaac Griswold, purchase Jonathan Dunnin'"

"In 1669 the following list of freeman of the 'Town of Killingworth' is recorded: Mr. John Woodbridge, Mr. Edward Griswold, Josiah Hull, John Wilcockson, Samuel Buell, Jonas Westover, Eliazer Isbel, William Stevens, Nathaniel Parmerly, William Barver, John Miggs, Sr., Andrew Wards, William Kulsey, William Wellman, George Chatfield, Thomas Stevens, John Kielsey, John Muggs, Jr., Josiah Hull, John Rosseter, townsmen; George Chatfield, Constable."

2.  Claypool, Edward and Azalea Clizbee, A Genealogy of the Descendants of William Kelsey, Vol. I, (Pub. Tuttle, Morehouse and Taylor Co., 1928).

3.  Barlow, Claude Willis, John Steevens of Guilford, Connecticut,  (Rochester, NY: John M. Stephens, 1976).

Several bloggers have written about towns they have felt connected to. For me, it is Killingworth.  For some reason, I've always traveled to the town in early April, just before spring. So all my photos look like fall with huge ugly brown oak leaves on the cemetery grounds. I am hoping to go again, but in early May. When I looked at Google's images for Killingworth, there a few scrolled pages down, I couldn't believe my own picture, one being my flower logo, a click pulled my blog of December 11, 2010 for my Kelsey line, and then the logo for My Heritage Award had my Davis line post.  Both Kelsey and Davis were from Killingworth. You just don't know where your information is going to show up!

New: Historical information from Tercentenary, Clinton, CT 1663-1963, (Pub. Clinton, CT, 1963).

Page 5. "The names of the settlers and proprietors, were as follows, viz. John Meigs, Bryan Rosseter, John Rosseter, George Chatfield, Nathaniel Parmelee, Thomas Stevens, William Stevens and Benjamin Wright from Guilford; William Griswold from Saybrook; Josias Hull, from the county of Barnstable, Mass.; Henry Farnum and Eleazer Isabel, from Long Island; Samuel Buel from Wales; William Barber from England; and Matthew Allen, Henry Crane, Jonathan Drummer, Joseph Hand, William Heyden, John Hodge, John Nettleton, Thomas Smith, William Wellman, Jonas Westover and Robert Williams."

Page 7. "Ananias Turner and Andrew Ward moved into Killingworth as early as 1670. Robert Lane, from Derbyshire in England, and the ancestors of the Merrills and Rutty families were also early settlers. Robert Carter from Bristol in England became an inhabitant about 1700, and Ebenezer Hurd, from Waterbury in this state, around 1706. The Morgans in this town are from Groton, and the Hillyards from Stonington."

The settlement in North Killingworth began in 1716. The first settlers in this parish, were Isaac Kelsey Esq., Dea. Josiah Hull, Dea. Joseph Wilcos, Dea. Daniel Buel, John Wilcox, Joseph Griswold, Nathaniel Parmelee, Ebenezer Hull, Samuel Stevens, and Edward Rutty. These were all from the first parish in the town. Solomon Davis, Timothy Chittenden and Theophilus Redfield soon united with them;  but from what places they emigrated is not known. James Hill, David Blatchley and Bezaliel Bristol, moved into this place from Guilford about 1750.The Graves and Harris families are from Saybrook."

Page 9. "The present Killingworth is called North Killingworth. At that time the two parts were one town, but North Killingworth did have its own church, a Congregation and an Episcopal Church, both established prior to the separation into the two towns."

LATE OF GLASSENBURY, Deceased.

"In the name of God, Amen. I, John Kilbourn, Sen'r, of the Town of Glastenbury, in the County of Hartford, in the Colony of Connecticut, in New England. Knowing that it is appointed for men once to die, and considering the uncertainty as to the time of death, withall knowing it to be the Will of God, who in his tender visitation calls upon me to set my house in order before I die, and I being (though weak in body) yet of perfect and sound understanding and memory, and of disposing mind, Praise be to Almighty God, Do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following. I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God, hoping through the merits of Christ to obtain free pardon of all my sins and to inherit Eternal Life, and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named ; and concerning my outward Estate, since the Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, to him therefore belongs the Praise that I possess in this kind ; and as for the portion thereof that he hath given me, it is my mind and Will that after my decease, the same may be disposed of as followeth.

And further, it is my Will, that my said sons, Benjamin, David and Abraham, shall yield a convenient way for Horse and man, to, and from, and through each others' Land, as well for their advantage as for the advantage and ease of my said son John, that he may pass to his Land, which in this my Last Will and Testament, I have given unto him, unless the aforesaid Highway laid out lately by the Town shall be improved for that end, and then if the Town shall make use of that Highway, my son David shall only and alone be obliged to yield to John a convenient way for horse and man, to his own land as aforesaid. Further it is my Will, that my son John shall not deter or hinder any of my other sons from cutting and carrying off wood from his land, so long as the same shall lie unfenced. Lastly, I appoint my beloved Wife, and my beloved son Abraham Kilbourn, to be my Executors of this my last Will and Testament. Henry's Adventure and Obituary -- Sunday's Obituary

“[FROM the IOWA STATESMAN — JAN. 3, 1850]

OBITUARY.

HENRY W. KILBOURNE, of Fort Madison, Iowa, died on the 23d of October last, at Sacramento City, California, aged 20 years.

Such is the brief record gathered from an eastern paper, of the death of the eldest son of David W. Kilbourne, Esq., of this place, who left his father's house in the month of May last, for the shores of the Pacific.

No letters were received from him after his arrival in the valley of the Sacramento, and the first direct information his friends had about him is, that he is dead! They have learned nothing of the details of his sickness, or suffering — they only know that he is no more!

His bereaved parents and brothers are overwhelmed by the mournful intelligence of his decease, and crushed down by a great sorrow, which He only who orders all things for His own wise, inscrutable, yet merciful purposes, can assuage.

No young man ever stood fairer, or was more popular, in the community, where he was known, than Henry Kilbourne. Agreeable in his manners, kind in his intercourse with acquaintances and most fervently and affectionately attached to the inmates of his own home, he was a general favorite with all. All therefore, who knew him, deeply mourn for his loss, and feel it perhaps more keenly, when they remember that he died far away from his home, and in the very bloom and springtime of his youth.

The desire of gathering gold had but little, if anything, to do with his journey over the plains; he was rather carried away by that irrepressible spirit of adventure, and travel, so common to the youth of our country, and especially those residing in the Mississippi Valley.

From books and papers, which he left behind him, his parents find consolation in discovering that he was fully impressed with the uncertainty of life, and the necessity of preparing for another state. They are consoled to know that his mind was not wholly engaged in seeking riches on earth, but that he was also employed in laying up treasures in that place where 'neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.' And they will doubtless find solace in the well-founded hope that his spirit passed away from the Valley of the Sacramento, rich in earthly gold, to walk in that city whose 'streets are pure gold'-— the New Jerusalem.”
