The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Robbins Library / Arlington Library, Arlington, Massachusetts -- History and Genealogy Room

Side view of the Library entrance.
The History and Genealogy collection was on the 4th floor. It is kept locked, so a librarian had to take me up there, I also needed permission from the director to take photos, only stipulation was that I don't take pictures of people.
The room is larger than shown in these few photos, but I wanted to show more of the old sections of the Library. You'll see why.

View of the library from the cemetery across the driveway. Notice the two British flags, in honor of two who died near that spot during the Revolutionary War.

While driving around, I came across a memorial to five British soldiers, shown below. Since the cemetery is in Lincoln, the town where Paul Revere was captured by the British soldiers (then released). I shouldn't have been surprised to see it because other markers for British soldiers are in Concord as well.

One of my favorite places, located on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We owned a summer house just a little over an hour away, so this was a frequent stop during our travels.

Peter Jenison / Jennison buried in Wayland, Massachusetts -- Tombstone Tuesday

Here Lyes the
Body of
Mr. Peter
Jenison; Who
Deced January Ye
17th, 1723 Aged
41 Years 3 Mo

His foot-stone is one of the nicest I've seen. Most times, I see just the initials, and never the scroll work.
Peter Jenison was my 7th great-granduncle.

Four Jenisons are buried above. Because of the sun, I couldn't take very good photos. Another trip might be in the works. This cemetery isn't far from where I live, and I recently discovered why I couldn't locate his burial site. It's because I had his named spelled Jennison and not Jenison, but his name was spelled both ways according to the sources I used. His wife is buried in another town, and may be seen HERE.

I called the Wayland Cemetery Department for help on where he might be buried. The photo below, from their webpage gave me an idea where he might not be buried, so I needed help. They didn't know exactly, but gave me two ideas. Once there, we tried the small "Old Section" first, and my husband found him immediately. Peter Jenison is listed in FindAGrave, with a cemetery stone photo, however, no lot number or exact indication of where he was buried.

Thomas Barnes and Family from Connecticut

The Barnes family is another old Connecticut line and I am showing five generations of my direct line. In my tree there are 73 Barnes, most lived in Hartford County, Connecticut.  My direct lines are in All Caps.

At the left, if the Barnes Chapel in Bristol, Connecticut, designed by my grandfather, Earle K. Bishop in the 1920s. The Wikipedia site for Bristol provided some interesting tidbits, one was: "it was once a leader in chrysanthemum production and still holds an annual "Mum Festival." Since I need the roots, I think I see a trip in the future to visit the Festival, several museums and a cemetery or two.
