The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Settlement and Heirs of JOHN ADAMS 1792 - 1860

The below document copy was sent to me by the Genesee Co., New York historian at least 16 years ago. She sent me the genealogy papers I requested and the Settlement for the estate of John Adams, which was a total surprise to me. There was no source as to what book, volume nor page number this was in.

(As of January 2023, this person, my direct ancestor has a brick wall to his ancestors).

Follow Friday -- The Librarian's Guide to Genealogical Services and Research

One of my favorite "how to do" books covering genealogy was written for librarians, not genealogists. Before you rush out to buy it, let me tell you, it is pricey, Amazon has the paperback for $85, it was printed in 2004, and it is a little dated concerning web sites. However, they do mention google, which surprised me. The best thing would be to use www.worldcat.org and see if one of the 241 libraries that carry it is at a location near you.

When the book was first published, I used it a lot for the classes I was teaching to beginner genealogists. I especially liked the CD in which you could print out great census forms, and various checklists. Since this was 2004, I doubt the CD would work with new operating systems since XP, but it could. As the title states, the book is for librarians, but it could be given to a researcher in need of help.

The Table of Contents has chapters covering: Starting an Organized Search, Starting Research and 10 other topics. There is also a list of figures, such as: Pedigree Chart, Family Group Sheet, Research Log and Ancestor Interview Form, all basic forms. However, I particularly liked the Federal Census Chronology for a set period of time, like the years 1790-1860, 1870-1900. All those years are printed on one page, which makes it easy to view a person and or family.

Another chart I liked, and had never seen before is, "Where to Look First for Genealogical Data" each page is broken down into a time frame, such as 1850 - 1900, 1900 - 1950, each with the types of records you should be locating. For instance, the first places to look for the period of 1850 - 1900 are, the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census, Ellis Island database, Civil War Pension Applications, State death indexes, Probate records, birth-marriage-death records, cemetery records, etc. Sometimes it is nice having a list right in front of you. Of course, this list is different than the one for the 1950-2000 period, which doesn't have any censuses listed!

Unfortunately, I couldn't locate the author to get permission to post a few examples, as his web page was down. The publisher has yet to respond to my email. Note: He contacted me and gave permission. See next post.

Looking Back

My Looking Back post is something I do the last day of every month.

In late August, Susan Peterson of Long Lost Relatives surprised me with the Genea-Angel Award.  Since then, I have been trying to decide how to share it with other bloggers. Recently, I've been seeing "thank yous" to those who have left comments at several blogs, so, I asked Susan if she thought I should do it also. Without hesitation, she said, "yes." It is my pleasure to share this darling Genea-Angel Award to the following people. You may copy the link and post to your blog. Many, many thanks for the nice comments you have left at my site this past month. And again, thank you to Susan.

Please visit the below sites, if you haven't yet done so. They are all tops!

Greta Koehl of  Greta's Genealogy Bog for her Follow Friday was kind to include my new blog Flowers From My Area as one of her selections. Thank you very much. Even though flowers and nature have nothing to do with genealogy, I have discovered there are quite a few flower lovers out there. I have taken out my comment section there, so just sit back and enjoy.

My cousin, Claire who lives near Niagara Falls, New York went on a research trip and found three wills for me, two were for my direct ancestors. What a treat. I've yet to analyze them and figure out some names, but I will very soon. This is a project I can't wait to begin. I also received the Report of Separation from the Navy on my father, quite interesting and I look forward to writing about it.  I hope these things are completed by next month.

Historical Societies -- New England Photos

What do a train depot, old bank, old church, an old one-room school house, and an old dwelling have in common? They are now homes to Historical Societies, and I feel sentimental about these buildings because of the good memories associated with them in their new life. In the future, as I photo more, I will add them to this site.

What can a person say about Historical Societies? I think we all love them, and if you look hard enough you will probably see one in every town.  Recently, my husband and I passed quite a few, and I decided to take some photos. Time didn't permit us to stop, but that was okay, as we had been in several, and my husband is a member of one as well.

The Kennebunkport Historical Society in Maine was simply darling, in an old one room schoolhouse. I noticed that they are only open six hours a week, three hours on two days. You had better be extremely prepared when you go there. It was closed when we stopped.

In York, Maine, the Old York Historical Society, below, is in the center of town. It used to be a bank. My husband and I did quite a bit of research in there, as he has old from there. The location is great, because you can walk to shops and get a bite to eat.

The Church below has been home to the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit of Maine for 31 years. My husband has been a member for about 10 years, and I have done research there. There is a great collection of resources for all New England states in the Genealogy and History Department upstairs. The Church is used for weddings, and there is a Museum as well on the first floor.

Two sidewalks have been made with memorial bricks.

The four below are in Massachusetts

I used this Society when I needed information on Simon Bradstreet and his wife Anne Dudley.

Above is the Lexington Historical Society in Lexington, Massachusetts
I have several ancestors from this town, and I grew up there, but have never been in the building. The old train depot has been put to good use.

The next three photos are of the Chelmsford Historical Society.
Although I lived and went to High School in this town, it wasn't until the past month that I discovered where the Society is located (not in the center of town, like most).

Dracut Historical Society, Dracut, Massachusetts
On the porch is the display below.
From Maine is this beautiful building, home to the
Pejepscot Historical Society Museums in Brunswick.
