The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Killingworth, Connecticut, I Have More Ancestors from Here than Anywhere Else!

Killingworth, Connecticut has one of the largest concentration of my direct ancestors, and a custom report revealed that I had 34 direct line couples married there. I have 753 source citations from the Vital Records of Killingworth!

What is special about Killingworth? When I first began the hobby, I became familiar with the name; often misspelled Killingsworth, and confused with the other town, Killingly. My mother's DAR patriot, Asher Wright, died there, and my DAR patriot, Jonathan Kilborn was married there (I was happy to find a new patriot, so I didn't have to share hers.)

I was hooked on this town when I inquired about records, then soon received quite a packet from the Killingworth town hall. An employee made copies of selected original records for me. Soon I was planning a visit, and when I went, it became my first cemetery trip, (about 2.5 hours away).

Of all the direct surnames, there are many with multiple generations, the families are:
Crane (3);
Davis (5);
Farnham (4);
Griffin (4);
Hayton (3);
Hull (4);
Kelsey (8);
Kilborn (2);
Steevens (2);
Turner (3);
Wilcoxson (3)
Wright (5)

Fortunately, there are many records for this area, and family genealogies as well. Almost every early family is related to somebody in the Hull, Kelsey or Steevens family. Knowing where your ancestors lived can help in doing research, and it helped me even solve a brick wall. There are three genealogies I constantly used:

1.  Hull, Robert E., The Ancestors & Descendants of George Hull and Thamzen Mitchell.

Page 36 "The following 'Allotment of the several inhabitants of Hammonascitt' is from page 1 of the Town Records of Killingworth.

"Thomas Smith, William Barber, Henry Farnam, William Wellman, George Chatfield, Thomas Stevens, Edward Griswold, William Heyton, Samuel Buell, John Kelsey, Robert Williams, granted, John Nuthton, granted, -- Turney, purchase John Rositer by agreement, John Miggs, granted John Shether, purchase of Jonathan Dunnin, George Sanders, granted William Stevens, Josiah Hull, Senr., Eliezer Isbel, granted, Isaac Griswold, purchase Jonathan Dunnin'"

"In 1669 the following list of freeman of the 'Town of Killingworth' is recorded: Mr. John Woodbridge, Mr. Edward Griswold, Josiah Hull, John Wilcockson, Samuel Buell, Jonas Westover, Eliazer Isbel, William Stevens, Nathaniel Parmerly, William Barver, John Miggs, Sr., Andrew Wards, William Kulsey, William Wellman, George Chatfield, Thomas Stevens, John Kielsey, John Muggs, Jr., Josiah Hull, John Rosseter, townsmen; George Chatfield, Constable."

2.  Claypool, Edward and Azalea Clizbee, A Genealogy of the Descendants of William Kelsey, Vol. I, (Pub. Tuttle, Morehouse and Taylor Co., 1928).

3.  Barlow, Claude Willis, John Steevens of Guilford, Connecticut,  (Rochester, NY: John M. Stephens, 1976).

Several bloggers have written about towns they have felt connected to. For me, it is Killingworth.  For some reason, I've always traveled to the town in early April, just before spring. So all my photos look like fall with huge ugly brown oak leaves on the cemetery grounds. I am hoping to go again, but in early May. When I looked at Google's images for Killingworth, there a few scrolled pages down, I couldn't believe my own picture, one being my flower logo, a click pulled my blog of December 11, 2010 for my Kelsey line, and then the logo for My Heritage Award had my Davis line post.  Both Kelsey and Davis were from Killingworth. You just don't know where your information is going to show up!

Page 5. "The names of the settlers and proprietors, were as follows, viz. John Meigs, Bryan Rosseter, John Rosseter, George Chatfield, Nathaniel Parmelee, Thomas Stevens, William Stevens and Benjamin Wright from Guilford; William Griswold from Saybrook; Josias Hull, from the county of Barnstable, Mass.; Henry Farnum and Eleazer Isabel, from Long Island; Samuel Buel from Wales; William Barber from England; and Matthew Allen, Henry Crane, Jonathan Drummer, Joseph Hand, William Heyden, John Hodge, John Nettleton, Thomas Smith, William Wellman, Jonas Westover and Robert Williams."

Page 7. "Ananias Turner and Andrew Ward moved into Killingworth as early as 1670. Robert Lane, from Derbyshire in England, and the ancestors of the Merrills and Rutty families were also early settlers. Robert Carter from Bristol in England became an inhabitant about 1700, and Ebenezer Hurd, from Waterbury in this state, around 1706. The Morgans in this town are from Groton, and the Hillyards from Stonington."

The settlement in North Killingworth began in 1716. The first settlers in this parish, were Isaac Kelsey Esq., Dea. Josiah Hull, Dea. Joseph Wilcos, Dea. Daniel Buel, John Wilcox, Joseph Griswold, Nathaniel Parmelee, Ebenezer Hull, Samuel Stevens, and Edward Rutty. These were all from the first parish in the town. Solomon Davis, Timothy Chittenden and Theophilus Redfield soon united with them;  but from what places they emigrated is not known. James Hill, David Blatchley and Bezaliel Bristol, moved into this place from Guilford about 1750.The Graves and Harris families are from Saybrook."

Page 9. "The present Killingworth is called North Killingworth. At that time the two parts were one town, but North Killingworth did have its own church, a Congregation and an Episcopal Church, both established prior to the separation into the two towns."

John Kilbourn was my 8th great-grandfather. (Original will is below.)

"LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JOHN KILBOURN, Sen'r.,
LATE OF GLASSENBURY, Deceased.

"In the name of God, Amen. I, John Kilbourn, Sen'r, of the Town of Glastenbury, in the County of Hartford, in the Colony of Connecticut, in New England. Knowing that it is appointed for men once to die, and considering the uncertainty as to the time of death, withall knowing it to be the Will of God, who in his tender visitation calls upon me to set my house in order before I die, and I being (though weak in body) yet of perfect and sound understanding and memory, and of disposing mind, Praise be to Almighty God, Do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following. I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God, hoping through the merits of Christ to obtain free pardon of all my sins and to inherit Eternal Life, and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named ; and concerning my outward Estate, since the Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, to him therefore belongs the Praise that I possess in this kind ; and as for the portion thereof that he hath given me, it is my mind and Will that after my decease, the same may be disposed of as followeth.
Imprimis. I Will that my just debts and funeral charges, be well and truly paid and discharged.

Item. I give and bequeath to my beloved Wife, Elizabeth Kilbourn, the sole benefit and improvement of my Dwelling House, and the improvement of three quarters of my Barn, as also the use and improvement of three quarters of my meadow and uplands, with the use and benefit of my Orchard, all being in Glastenbury aforesaid, and she to have the use of the same during her natural life. Item. I give unto my son, Jonathan Kilbourn, all my labor which I laid out upon the lands in Colchester, which he now possesses and enjoys, vizt, the clearing of three acres of land, with all the Posts and rails, and a Frame, to be to him and to his heirs and assigns forever. Also Mr. Elton's Sermon book, with a share of my small books and remaining moveables, having regard to what moveables he hath already had.

Item. I give unto my son, Benjamin Kilbourn, my pasture land, butting East upon a highway lately laid out by the Town, if said Highway is improved, but if not, to butt upon my said son David's lot, and West upon my upland field, North upon the said Samuel Hale, and South upon Joseph Hill, Sen. — Provided he returns home to settle upon it, and if he return not home, and settle as aforesaid, then the same shall be equally divided between my four sons, viz., John, Ebenezer, David and Abraham, to be to them and their heirs forever. I also give unto my said son, Benjamin, Mr. Hooker's book, with a share of my moveables, to be at his disposal forever.

Item. I give unto my said son, David Kilbourn, one half mile in length of my said Farm in Glastenbury, to butt West upon said Highway lately laid out by the Town as aforesaid, if said Highway be improved, if not, then to butt upon my said pasture hereby given to my said son Benjamin, and to extend Eastward half a mile, butting East upon Land I Also give to my said son John, North upon said Samuel Hale, and South on said Thomas Kilbourn, and partly upon said Joseph Hill, to be to him and to his heirs and assigns forever. Item. I give to my son Abraham Kilbourn, my Dwelling House, Barn and Orchard, with all my meadow land within said Town of Glastenbury, and my upland from the pasture aforesaid to the meadow, to be to him and to his heirs forever, after my said Wife shall be deceased, he having the use of one quarter part of my said House, Barn, Orchard, Meadow and Upland, during her natural life, if she needeth it not for her comfortable subsistance. And further, it is my Will, that my said sons, Benjamin, David and Abraham, shall yield a convenient way for Horse and man, to, and from, and through each others' Land, as well for their advantage as for the advantage and ease of my said son John, that he may pass to his Land, which in this my Last Will and Testament, I have given unto him, unless the aforesaid Highway laid out lately by the Town shall be improved for that end, and then if the Town shall make use of that Highway, my son David shall only and alone be obliged to yield to John a convenient way for horse and man, to his own land as aforesaid. Further it is my Will, that my son John shall not deter or hinder any of my other sons from cutting and carrying off wood from his land, so long as the same shall lie unfenced. Lastly, I appoint my beloved Wife, and my beloved son Abraham Kilbourn, to be my Executors of this my last Will and Testament. In testimony that this is my last Will and Testament, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifth day of December, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ten, and in the ninth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Anne, Queen over England, &c.

Henry's Adventure and Obituary -- Sunday's Obituary

“[FROM the IOWA STATESMAN — JAN. 3, 1850]

OBITUARY.

HENRY W. KILBOURNE, of Fort Madison, Iowa, died on the 23d of October last, at Sacramento City, California, aged 20 years.

Such is the brief record gathered from an eastern paper, of the death of the eldest son of David W. Kilbourne, Esq., of this place, who left his father's house in the month of May last, for the shores of the Pacific.

No letters were received from him after his arrival in the valley of the Sacramento, and the first direct information his friends had about him is, that he is dead! They have learned nothing of the details of his sickness, or suffering — they only know that he is no more!

His bereaved parents and brothers are overwhelmed by the mournful intelligence of his decease, and crushed down by a great sorrow, which He only who orders all things for His own wise, inscrutable, yet merciful purposes, can assuage.

No young man ever stood fairer, or was more popular, in the community, where he was known, than Henry Kilbourne. Agreeable in his manners, kind in his intercourse with acquaintances and most fervently and affectionately attached to the inmates of his own home, he was a general favorite with all. All therefore, who knew him, deeply mourn for his loss, and feel it perhaps more keenly, when they remember that he died far away from his home, and in the very bloom and springtime of his youth.

The desire of gathering gold had but little, if anything, to do with his journey over the plains; he was rather carried away by that irrepressible spirit of adventure, and travel, so common to the youth of our country, and especially those residing in the Mississippi Valley.

From books and papers, which he left behind him, his parents find consolation in discovering that he was fully impressed with the uncertainty of life, and the necessity of preparing for another state. They are consoled to know that his mind was not wholly engaged in seeking riches on earth, but that he was also employed in laying up treasures in that place where 'neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.' And they will doubtless find solace in the well-founded hope that his spirit passed away from the Valley of the Sacramento, rich in earthly gold, to walk in that city whose 'streets are pure gold'-— the New Jerusalem.”

Note: Henry's father was a well-known lawyer and the family was quite wealthy.
Henry was my third cousin, four times removed.

Asking For Help -- Adoption of Mark Weiss or Mark Davis

The below letter was sent to me from a researcher in Missisquoi Co., Quebec, Canada. I obtained additional information and decided to post it here, in hopes he could be located for the family. The photo is of MARK WEISS / MARK DAVIS at age 1.

"Dear Friends, Family and all my Cemetery Contacts,

God help me, I'm hoping I will do a good job with this plea for help.

I have an Aunt, who is now 88 years old and quite possibly won't have many years left, this is her story more than mine but after trying to help the past few years without success I have decided that maybe the best way is through Internet.

If everyone I send this to sends it on to their friends, family and e-mail contacts we should be able to cover the whole North American map and quite possibly help my Aunt in her quest. We will keep this simple and just maybe we will find him.

Many years ago she gave her son up for adoption, she did this in order to with the hope of giving him a better life than what she could afford to do at that time. She kept him as long as she possibly could without help from ex-husband, family or welfare and on minimum wages. After a time she made a heart wrenching decision with hopes that this child would have a better chance in life in a good home with 2 loving parents and possibly a good education to base his future life as an adult on.

She has kept his picture over the years, with all items, papers, letters etc concerning his adoption with the hope of someday finding him and being able to express her reasons for giving him to a  loving family and the love she still has in her heart for him.

Her biggest fear over the years was that maybe he had died, but in the past year she was informed that he was still living so therefore the search goes on.

His birth name was MARK WEISS / or MARK DAVIS and he was born on February 28, 1962 in Rhode Island.

If anyone has information concerning this man who will be 49 yrs old shortly, please have him contact me,  Marilyn ( his cousin), davism1582@gmail.com or Evelyn (his sister) at ever411@bellsouth.net"
______
When I wrote Marilyn, I told her I was very familiar with her name as she has posted many cemetery records on the internet, and I've used her information. I am hoping somebody will know of Mark Weiss, OR he will see this and contact either of the above two women.  Thank you.

Marilu Henner of "Taxi" Fame -- Follow Friday

Why would I want to follow the actress, Marilu Henner? If you are a news junkie, you already know, but if not, let me explain. Ms. Henner has a condition, I want. It is called Superior Autobiographical Memory, or hyperthymesia. Marilu has appeared recently on "60 Minutes" and just the other day on "The Today Show" and spoke about her rare condition. Although, has spoken of it in the past, those two recent shows were the first times I'd heard of it. I don't know a whole lot about her, other than watching her on "Taxi" and "The Apprentice" of which she didn't win, and a few movies. There are a lot of photos of her through Google images, I'm certain most of you will recognize her.

Can you imagine what it would be like, as a genealogist, to remember everything your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or any other member of the family ever told you about their lives? Does she even know what genealogy is? Here, I couldn't even remember how to spell her name, or what I needed at the grocery store.

I wonder if she has traced her lineage to see if anybody else in her tree had the same condition.  Could it be heredity? I don't know, but she did mention that her son also has the ability to recall what happened on such and such a date. Imagine that you would never be wrong with dates, events, and who said what. I could live with that.
