The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

New Book on DNA by Dr. Bryan Sykes -- It's been a long personal wait

1. Dr. Bryan Sykes (The DNA Author)
Dr. Bryan Sykes was a renowned Oxford geneticist known for his breakthrough book The Seven Daughters of Eve (2001). [1]
  • The Book Overview: The book explains mitochondrial DNA, using it to track European ancestry back to seven prehistoric "clan mothers". [1, 2]
  • Reviews & Consensus: The first half of the book, which covers real genetics (like analyzing the DNA of Ötzi the Iceman), received wide critical praise for making science accessible. However, the later chapters—which featured fictional, romanticized short stories about the lives of these seven ancient women—received mixed reviews from critics and readers who wanted strictly hard science. [1, 2, 3]
  • Personal Life: Dr. Sykes was married twice, first to Sue Foden and then to Janis Wilson. He spent his later years with his partner, Danish painter Ulla Plougmand. Dr. Sykes passed away in December 2020. [1]
