Pages

The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Follow Friday -- Don't Follow Me For Sources

On September 22, 2010, I received the following message below. It is a very nice one, and the topic has been on my mind for about as long as I've been blogging, and I would like to address it now.

My reply is directed to the readers who are rather new to genealogy, not the more advanced, who do things right.

When I began doing genealogy over 20 years ago, I knew little about sources, other than putting the title of the book, page number, author's name, publisher and date. There were many times I forgot, and every once and a while, I come across a surname without a source. Many of my sourcing shouldn't be used as a guide. However, most of my book sources should be okay, but my censuses are totally wrong. So wrong, that I've had a lot of compliments about my method! In my early days, I entered information for family members, and didn't follow the "proper" or "correct" guidelines.

I sourced my way so distant cousins could see and understand what is on the census. Simple things like name and age. An example of how I did it and still do is shown for my grandfather in the 1930 census:

"1930 U.S. Census for Evanston, Cook Co., Illinois. Dist. 2113, sheet 33, Pg. 221. Clarence Poole, age 39 b. Ill., attorney (parents b. DC and Mass.); Marjorie age 39 b. Mich. (parents b. Michigan). Note: Clarence and Marjorie married at age 27. Children: John age 10 and Judy age 7 (both born Illinois). Roma Schneider age 25 (maid), b. Wisconsin. This was indexed as Coole by Ancestry.com." My aunt and her brother, and my cousins can understand this, it is cut and dry, and I believe they could locate this census page, perhaps with a little help. Note: Sometimes I type in the occupation, immigration date and anything else I think might be important.

The correct way is something like this: Illinois. Cook County. 1930 U.S. census, population schedule. Digital images. Ancestry.com http://www.ancestry.com : 2005. From National Archives microfilm T9, roll 535. If you do a full reference, it would be much longer, still with little family information other than the head of household's name.

Books have been published on how to do sourcing, and I would be glad to point you in the right direction, if you write me.

If you are hoping to become a professional and want others to admire your work, you should do it the "right" way. But, if you are doing genealogy as a hobby, and want others to understand it, you will need to decide which way to go.

So Freda, I do have time to write, and my reply to you is a huge thank you because your letter became the perfect platform for which I was able to write this blog.

"Hi Barbara,
I realize you don't have time to respond, but I just wanted to tell you how much I respect your references! I have never seem them done so well!
I am researching people in the Eastern Townships.
(There was more to the letter.)  Take Care!
Freda"

Ten Eyck Farm, Dunham, Quebec, Canada

In September 1999 my husband and I went on a research trip to Dunham, Missisquoi Co., Quebec, Canada for four days. Traveling to this area of Canada took less than seven hours, so it wasn't a very long trip from Massachusetts. I was extremely well prepared because I knew exactly where I wanted to go, had the addresses of those I wanted to meet,  and had mapped out the cemeteries.  It all came together.

The first stop was at the Missisquoi Historical Society in East Stanbridge, a goldmine of resources. I had communicated with the archivist and knew the hours of operation and their holdings. Later, I met with a cousin, who came quite a distance to meet me at my B and B. The owners were very accommodating to us...I'm thinking, although they spoke French and I only English.

Another thing my husband and I did was drive all over the county and that of Brome County looking at gravestones. Another cousin had just visited the area several months earlier and found a number of our shared ancestors, so I was extremely fortunate. She had given me a marked map and copies of her photos. In all, I located 22 direct ancestor graves! I was very lucky.

The last wonderful aspect of the trip was, I went to the old Ten Eyck homestead.  I have no idea how old the house is, but the land has been in the family for well over 200 years.  My grandmother grew up in the house, and when I was young, we went there for a long visit, as my grandmother's brother's family now lived there. The brother was deceased, but his wife was kind enough to invite us in for a long chat about the family. One thing led to another, and I found out that the wife was born in the city where I now live! You just never know what you are going to find out when you talk to somebody.

This trip still brings back sentimental thoughts. It was a perfect trip, perfect weather, and perfect memories.

The photos below are three photos taken that day at the house. And one below was scanned from the book, Dunham 1867 - 1992 (Anniversary Book),  (Pub. Editions Louis Bilodeau and Fils Ltee, Sherbrook, Quebec 1992).
Ten Eyck Farm, Dunham, Missisquoi Co., Quebec, Canada

Ten Eyck Farm from Google Earth.
(The house is at the top of the circle, above the word Chemin.

I love this photo taken by Dianne Jones. I met her during our 1999 trip we have several connections. She even knew my aunt and uncle who lived in Vermont.

I'm certain it gets very cold in the winter.

I asked the photographer, Kathy Harris-Miltimore if it was taken in Dunham and if I could use her photo. It was taken on Beattie Street, not really my ancestor's house. She also gave me permission. This shows you how beautiful the area is.

I Spent the Day With Him

My uncle, William Scribner "Scrib" Fellows, has been dead 44 years, and I have thought of him many times. He was married to my mother's sister, and although I hardly saw his family because they lived in another state. His unique first name, Scribner was taken from his grandmother's surname.

At age 42 year old on April 18, 1966, while at work in the morning, he called my aunt to say he wasn't feeling well and that he was coming home. But, he never arrived. All day, my aunt was frantic, and that escalated in the evening when a co-worker passed by a lake parking lot and spotted his car. Upon further investigation, it was discovered he had died at that spot.

A few days later, my aunt, the widow, and her brother from Dallas picked me up and we traveled a couple hundred miles to Tilton, New Hampshire where he was buried in the family plot, next to his father and grandparents.  It was a cold, windy April day, it was a nice cemetery on a hill with a great view. I recently went back, and when I did I couldn't find the plot. It was my husband who found the site last week.

I probably didn't meet Scrib until I was in 4th grade, but the memories are there. He was so friendly and really played with my younger cousins. I really liked him, and I think everybody did. My aunt wrote me after the funeral service saying she had over 400 notes to write.

More than anything, I remember how he loved the woods. So much so, that after his death, his mother purchased the naming rights to a New Hampshire State Forest. It is called, Scribner Fellows State Forest. My husband and I finally visited it, and I was filled with emotion, I was so proud. After the day in the forest and the cemetery, I used all my available resources to find more information about my uncle. From the below article, you can see what a remarkable person he was during his very short lifetime. The photo above was taken in the Forest, and much later in the day, we went to his cemetery where the below pictures were taken.

From Brown Alumni Monthly July 1966, page 123.  "William Scribner Fellows '49, in Middletown, Conn., April 18.  He was the chief wood technologist with Stanley Works Laboratory. He began employment at Stanley Chemical Co., East Berlin, and was transferred to the corporate laboratory in 1961. In 1962, he was granted an educational leave of absence, receiving a Master's degree in Forestry from Yale University two years later. He returned to the Stanley Works laboratory as a technologist in 1964. During World War II, he served as Cpl., USA Infantry Division. He was a member of the Forest Products Research Society, the American Forestry Association, Society of American Foresters, Society of Wood Science and Technology, and the New England Kiln Drying Association. He also was a former member of the Cromwell (Conn.) Board of Education. Barbara B. Fellows, Maple Share Rd., Middletown, is his widow."

Because I have a long line of Fellows in my tree, I recently discovered that Scrib and I were 9th cousins, once removed as well as having the niece/uncle relationship.
