Update as of October 28, 2013. I discovered a website, Sons and Daughters of Newbury. Information is given as well as a list of the Heads of Families Who Settled in Newbury Previous to 1700, which is different from the above list on the monument.
Monument front and back.
Additional photos may be seen on my "Seeing New England" blog HERE.

NOTE: These photos were taken in December 2015. Apparently the shrubs were removed, and I kind of think the wires above were too.
The above photo was taken in the summer of 2013. In late October I drove by and discovered all the shrubs had been removed.

Yes! I descend from Anthony Morse, William Moulton and Edmund Mooers on this list. John Swett, father of Stephen Swett, is not on this list, but he's an ancestor, too, and lived in Newbury.
I am enjoying your Newbury, Ma posts. Once I get a chance I will have to see where John and Samuel Poore fit in my family. I believe they are great granduncles, just not sure what generation.
Tristram Coffin
Richard Dole
Edmund Greenleaf
William Ilsley
Henry Rolfe

Offhand I'd say about half a dozen of these names are familiar, including Noyes, Pettengill, and Ordway. Thanks!
Bailey, Cheney, Coffin, Emery, Gerrish, Greenleaf, Lowell, and Ordway for me.
these are my direct ancestors from that list :)

Nathaniel Merrill is my 11th great grandfather. What great pictures. These pics are really terrific to see for someone from the left coast.
Enjoy all your photos and information. I'm related to5 of the 1st Settlers of Newbury: John Cheney, Richard Kent, Edmund Mooer, Henry Rolfe and Thomas Whittier.

Vickie, what a list of names! Thanks for posting them, and HORRORS, I just noticed I never thanked all the others who left comments. I'm very sorry.
You might also enjoy my post with lots of photos of the town and where the first settlers landed. At http://lifefromtheroots.blogspot.com/2013/09/where-first-settlers-of-newbury.html
Thank you very much for posting this, as I may never get there.
I am related to Richard Kent, 8th great gdgf; Robert Coker 10th great gdgf; Richard Bartlett 7th great uncle. Love to exchange info with other researchers in my line. contact me at bforster3333@gmail.com
I am a direct Y chromosome from the William Sawyer on that list. And related to the Emerys as well. 8th Great paternal Grandmother Mary Emery
I am the 9th Great Grandchild of Robert Adams. I am slowly tracing my family history and found him through Ancestry.com. :)
Awesome blog! :)
James Clark, Thank you, I'm glad you found this post. Since it was taken, all the shrubs have been removed. Robert is my 10th great-grandfather!
I descend from William Pillsbury!
What a great website!
I am Denise Knight descendent of John Knight. I know live in California so seeing these pictures makes me miss my hometown of Newbury Massachusettes. Reminds me how beautiful it is!
Denise, I'm delighted you found my old post, fortunately the material never gets outdated. Just yesterday, my husband and I drove through Newbury on our way home from Maine. It looks the same. :-)
This is amazing to find. I also have a few relatives on that list, directly though, Nathaniel Merrill whose however many great granddaughters Narcissa Merrill married Ambrose Bryant. Thank you so much for posting this and look forward to seeing it myself soon!
Domestico,
I'm glad you have some ancestors as well. Since you mentioned going to visit this, I want you to know that they removed all the shrubs, so don't be looking for lots of greenery. Good luck!
I believe it is possible that some names are missing from the list.
Nicholas Holt(e) was amongst the early settlers and is mentioned in many of the Proprietors records until about 1642-1643 when he removed with several other families to settle the town of Andover, settling on Holts Hill (now the Ward Reservation) Nicholas'is my 12th gg father. Richard Dole (Also my 12th gg father) was the servant of Percival Lowell and I believe the records will indicate that they did not arrive in Newbury until 1639. I know this from research that I have completed on my family resulting from a land sruvey that I conducted for the Jackmans who own land off Low and Emery street which dates back to the 1630-1640 proprietors records in which Nicholas Holt was the lot layer who originally set the boundaries of the parcels in question between the Doles and the Knights. I literally had the honor of retracing the footsteps of my ancestor Nicholas, and for the same two families (Jackmans and Knights) who were originally granted their parcels as part of their share of the "common pasture". Nicholas Holt also appears as an owner on an early plan of the first settlement.
It appears the monument is not entirely correct with the list?
Its a great monument and a significant historical marker identifying our early ancestors and the risks they took to establish the new world and what would eventually become this great nation, just wondering how the list was generated, and if should be updated?
As a footnote I am also related to Darby Field, my 13 gg father on my mothers side - who arived in Boston sometime before 1630, went to Connecticut for a short time and was an early settler of Durham/Dover New Hamphire, and supposedly the first European to climb Mt Washington (which he supposedly originally called Mt Swan). Robert Field (Darby's brother) arrived in New England after Darby, with Nicholas Holt(e) abord the ship the "James" in 1634.
My family is so deeply rooted in the history of New England and this country that I am connected to so many families.
My story continually expands as time goes on!
Just wanted to write and thank you for the Founders of Newbury, MA post. I descend from John Pike and Henry Rolfe. Daniel Pierce may be from my Pierce line, just haven't had time yet to research it. I'm sure I'll find others on the list, since the early families intermarried so.
Warm regards,
Sharon Ellis
