My blog has been changed to make it more appealing for those who have New England ancestors and want to see the area through photos. Things I’ll include are typical white New England churches, libraries showing their genealogical collection, historical societies, cemeteries, war memorials, in general, anything to do with history.

For four years I’ve blogged mostly about my personal genealogy in New England (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire), New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wyoming, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. I still will, can’t forget my own roots.

Please check out the labels on the right side for articles. The header tabs at the top are a work in progress.

Surname Saturday -- TEN EYCK or TENEYCK (New York, New Jersey and Canada)

With over 304 Ten Eyck or TenEyck names in my database, I am pretty much related to all with that name.  This German surname translates in English to "At the Oak." To simplify the Descendant Register below, I didn't expand the first few generations as there are too many names.  Most of my early records came from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, (1932) Vol. 63. "The Ten Eyck Family in New York" by Henry W. George.  Note: I am not done entering the names. My direct lines are in green.

This is one of my favorite lines because it belongs to my grandmother. I only met her once, but she was with me at my birth, as the nurse. It was only last year that I discovered my father also shares the first five generations of Ten Eycks.

Barbara, I recently found some TenEyck's in a cemetery near here (Lenawee County Michigan).

I have photos:

Albert H. TenEyck 1873 to 1929

William Teneyck 1829 to 1909

Lucy, wife of William 1846 to 1927

There may be others, and I have not done ANY research, but do have these photos available if you would like them.

Hi Carol, Thank you so much. I will leave these names and dates here, perhaps a Ten Eyck will see this. I will do a little investigating also.

Oh my goodness, there are so many Ten Eycks! You certainly have compiled a huge database. Doing that with rare surnames makes sense. I have done the same with my husband's surname, in hopes of figuring out who is related to whom!

lindalee said...

Sorry, no Teneycks in my tree.

Barbara said...

Wendy, I thought the name was rare until I googled it! So surprised. And, Linda perhaps there will be another name that we will share.

You may want to try searching through records in Minnesota. I know that there is a sizable branch of the TenEyck family living there. Hope that helps!

In your #129, you could add that Teunis Van Middleswart's wife is Susannah BEEKMAN (of Albany NY). She was bp 1687 Sep 25, the daughter of Johannes Beekman and Machtel Schermerhorn.

Susannah Van Middlesworth's 1st cousin (Sus)Anna Beekman (bp 1686 Mar 7 dau of Hendrick Beekman/Annatje Quackenbosch) married Jacob Stoll, whose son John Stoll (bp 1716) married your #131 Janneke Ten Eyck, daughter of Andries Ten Eyck and Ariaantje Chrispel)... my mother is a Stoll from that line.

Thanks for the Ten Eyck stuff!

Hi to both Anonymous Ten Eyck friends. Thank you for your corrections, I will make changes very soon. I appreciate you taking the time to write, and I'm sorry #1, that I didn't write much, much sooner.

Hi!

I have a link in to the Ten Eyck's in my family.. haven't gotten to much research yet other than a couple of names...

Ethel Brandon (my great grand aunt) b 9 Apr 1894 d Nov 1988 (daughter of Thomas E Brandon and Mary McWhirter) from Ontario, Canada married Martin Ten Eyck and had a daughter Marie - who married Gordon McClymont and had Betty Ann and Gordon.

Not sure if they fit into your Ten Eyck's but the name definitely caught my eye when I was zipping through the blogs. :-)

Barbara Poole said...

Hi Osacody,
Thanks for writing. I'm very sorry to report, I've no Martins, I'm surprised at that. However, I believe it is probably from the same line as mine. If you trace Martin further back a few generations, maybe there is a connection. And, I would be happy to help, if I can.

Thanks Barbara. When I get that far up that section of the tree, I'll let you know how I fared. :-)

Thank you for your hard work! How would I go about tracing back roots if I only know my generation, my father's, my grandmother and maybe great-grandmother's information?

Out of curiosity do you know how the space was either added or removed in "Ten Eyck"?

Thanks so much!

Great job Barbara, I am a descendant of #3, Jacob C. Ten Eyck (1647-1697). I'm so very proud of ancestors and our name.

Any other descendants of Jacob C. Ten Eyck (1647-1697) I would love to hear from you.

I have in my possession a leather-bound 1862 Manual for the Use of the Legislature of the State of New York. In gold gilt engraved lettering on the front is the name E. Y. Ten Eyck. I have determined this person was elected President of the American Numismatic Society in 1867 but otherwise, I am not sure why he received a copy of this manual. The book is loaded with fascinating statistics, legislative material, including executives of all the states and the federal level. The President was Abraham Lincoln at the time. If anyone is interested in this book, please contact me at support@checkonme.org for more information.

I am descended from Andrew Ten Eyck, born Albany Co., NY married Elizabeth Hale, born Albany Co., NY, before 1818. They had a daughter Elizabeth born 17 Aug 1818, Albany Co., She married George J Yearsley in 1837. I have been looking for the parents of Andrew and Elizabeth for years. Does any of this sound familiar?

Barbara Poole said...

Hi Anonymous, Darn, I don't have Elizabeth Hale in my tree, have 12 Andrews TE's, and no George Yearsley. It's too bad, but there are so many TE's out there. Good luck, and if you find out the connection, please let me know.

I am looking for Tunis Eicke (Ten Eycke) b. 1720 Hunterdon Co, NJ m. Katherine Field whose daughter Margaret b. 1748 NJ married Cornelius Hoff. Do you know who his father was or which families I should be looking in.

Barbara Poole said...

Hi Carol,
While I have some Ten Eycks in Hunterdon Co., I don't have a Tunis or Katherine Field. I wish I could help you, but I have nothing to share with you. One of these days, you'll get a break on this line.

I have a George Dennick b. 1818 Albany, NY married Jane Ann Churchill.
Son, Leonard Gainsford Dennick was born 1839.
Some have suggested Dennick was alglosized from the name Ten Eyck.
Any suggestions on finding when and where the name change came in would be appreciated.

Barbara Poole said...

To Anonymous, I have seen the name spelled different ways, but not to the extreme of Dennick. I think it is it's own surname, because I went to Ancestry.com and saw quite a few listings, and even for the 1850 census. I would start with doing a google search of the name and look for it in Google books.

Hi Barbara and everyone,

I have Mary Ten Eyck (1765-1842)New York, married John George Tremper. Mary's parents are Jacob Ten Eyck (1730/35-1810)New York or New Jersey, married Rachael Thornton. My brick wall is Jacob. I have not been able to figure out who his parents are, or where he was born. I am also not positive that Jacob is his full given name. Would you happen to have any information that might help me out?

Thanks,
Carol Henry

Hi Carol,
Unfortunately, I don't have either Mary or Jacob in my tree. I constantly update my Trees4U RootsWeb tree at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=trees4u&recno=78664, so maybe you could check that in the future. Please note, that I am not done working on my grandmother's direct line, there is more to be done. Thanks for writing.

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. As for my Ten Eyck's, I had seen your Blog, and thought I would ask. A person just never knows unless they ask. I would love to check your tree. Might help me out in my quest in finding my Jacob's parents.

Thank you again for checking,

Carol Henry
