The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

How Observant Are You ?

Do you recognize the below photo? It was my very first header photo for my blog. If you look at the current one, you will see I changed seasons, not locations (see last photo). These were taken in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.

The winter photo was taken on a 50 degree day in January! The second photo, of the same cemetery, shows something quite interesting, especially if you have ancestors buried there and want to source it correctly. And the third photo was a total surprise, since I've been by it probably thousands of times. Why am I just noticing some of these things, well, it's due to a new iPad. Yesterday was my first time using the camera, and because of the large size of the photos it just about told me to really look at what I had taken...almost like looking at document. The first two answers are below.

I didn't enlarge because you wouldn't be able to see the right side (nice followers photos covered it.) The enlarged is below.
Cute little house on the common and, I never wondered what it was.
Middlesex Canal Toll House 1832
Oldest Canal Toll Houses in America. (Photo enlarged from above picture.)
This was totally new to me.

Notice the two signs? One says Forefathers Burial Grounds and the other is Forefathers Burying Ground.

Will of Moses Knap -- Amanuensis Monday

There are seven Moses Knaps from Connecticut in my tree, and I've been contacted several times about their genealogy. The will I transcribed was copied on large paper, 11" x 17", as a result I had to scan one page twice and tried to piece it together for the blog. Although I've done about 15 wills, this seemed more difficult, guess that's why I'm now forcing myself to do it. There were at least 10 words I couldn't figure out, but by using my hint, "Can't Read a Will", all but one was solved. This will was located at the New England Historic and Genealogical Library (NEHGS), (F/93/C69/1989 (1641-1880). Probate District is Fairfield, town is Fairfield, date is 1755, No. 3674.

Moses was my 6th great grandfather.

Happy New Year's from Lowell, MA and New Zealand

Several months ago, I received a handmade 2013 calendar from a friend who wanted to show her appreciation for some genealogy research and connections I provided to her. Her love of photography has been incorporated into this great desk-size calendar. This is a wonderful benefit of helping people, and it came totally unexpected.

Something a Little Different for the New Year

Which blog has 4,500,000 pageviews? You'll have to continue reading, because you won't be able to guess it.

Bloggers love writing and at the beginning of a new year, many will write what they accomplished the previous year, and what they hope to accomplish in the new year. I don't bother with the resolutions.

Instead, I've decided to post some of the very enjoyable blogs I follow that have no genealogy information. They are also the ones I usually read first. After 23 years of doing genealogy and over three years of writing this blog, it's time to discover what else is out there. If anybody has a few favorite, non-genealogy blogs, please leave me a comment. I'll include them to this list.

The most recent blog I discovered is, My Castle in Spain. Lala says, "I’m an ex Parisian living a village life in Andalusia (southern Spain). I create paper objects, I make aprons, I bake cakes for a restaurant and I occasionally translate to earn the extra bucks. Andalusia, gardens, pastry making, flowers, cakes and books and my Spanish boyfriend are my constant inspirations."

Do you like Paris and food? If so, you'll enjoy Paris Breakfast by Carol. She writes, "Paris breakfast is an 'amuse bouche', a little bite of daily Parisian life to savor with your coffe and inspire your dreams. I paint Paris dreams." I had never seen a blog with over 4,500,000 pageviews" That give you an idea of how popular it is.

The Library History Buff Blog, by Larry, a retired librarian, wrote, "Promoting the appreciation, enjoyment, and preservation of our library heritage." His blog has been a long-time favorite of mine.

One blog I can relate to and really love is Elizabeth's  About New York She has some of the best photos of the city, and this was my go-to site as Hurricane Sandy hit. She lives in lower Manhattan and captured real life days following the storm.

Now I know gardening is a huge hobby, maybe more popular than genealogy. Finding Growing with Plants was a real treat. Matt of Worcester, MA wrote, "Growing with plants began as a little project where I could document my daily adventures in my glass greenhouses and in the garden, here in central Massachusetts.  To show this blog's popularity, he has over 1,000,000 pageviews!

Another fun blog is Shortbread and Ginger. The owner, Liz writes, “I also love rummaging through charity shops for vintage bits and pieces." If you enjoy needlework, beads, antiques, you'll enjoy this site.

Heather Rojo recommended a cooking blog, Cooking without Dairy.

Wendy Grant Walter recommended a blog about quilts called, Crazy Mom Quilts.

Smokestack or Christmas Tree?

"The smokestack tree contains 5,440 light bulbs over 32 cables anchored to a 102-foot diameter angle ring at the base. The tree is topped with a 19-foot star." Information from The Lowell Sun newspaper, December 2011 (I had it linked, but the article has been removed.
The tree is located in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Reflection in a nearby mill.

From Wikipedia, "The Wannalancit Mills are an example of adaptive re-use as they contain offices. Part of the mills are owned by the University of Massachusetts Lowell. In 2000, the owners of the mill utilized their smokestack for the city's largest Christmas tree, reaching two hundred and fifty six feet in height."
