The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

The Barrett House, New Ipswich, New Hampshire

Barrett House
79 Main Street
New Ipswich, New Hampshire 03071

The Barrett House located in New Ipswich, New Hampshsire was open for the 2019 season on June 8. My husand and I have been members of the Historic New England society for several years and this was our 16th house to visit. (If you want to see the others I wrote about, go to the label on the right side.) We patiently waited through the winter for this day, and it didn't disappoint. Two other visitors came all the way from England.

BARRETT HOUSE

"Built in 1800 by Charles Barrett, as a residence for his son, Charles, Jr., "Forest Hall" as it was known, pays tribute to the Barrett family and to the 19th century textile industry. The Barrett Textile mills, located in Bank Village, produced cotton fabric for domestic and export usage. This house demostrates fine federal architectrul and testifies to the skill of local craftsmen."

View from the front door.

As usual, a lovely staircase and entry area.
If you have this Barrett line, you might be interested in seeing what I photographed for you. The marriage record was in a book, but I'm not sure if it was a diary or a bible, but you can see it in the photo below. Photos below are of various rooms.

Love this vase.

I loved the quilt colors when I saw it and took the photo. However, Apple was failing with this photo. It's too bad. The red square was absolutely vibrant.

We also saw a collection of old carriages in the barn, a lovely flower garden, and the stables that were converted into a reception / meeting room(s).

Pretty fancy bathroom. If I remember correctly, it was below the first floor.
View from the back yard.
It was a very hot day, so I didn't walk to the top, but my husband did and took a picture of me.

George Anderson's 101 Page Will / Probate and a Twist to this Story

In March 2015, I contacted Dane County, Wisconsin for copies of a will and probate records pertaining to George Anderson (he died Jan. 10, 1879 at the age of 94). He was my third great-grandfather, born in New Jersey. Months later, I learned that the entire probate packet was 101 pages long. I just read those pages this past week, his will is below, transcribed by me, followed by the actual copy, and the correspondence to the courthouse. There is no need to read it until you get to September. (I included it for my documentation.)

It took almost a month to get the exact copies I needed from the courthouse. There is a big twist to this story because six months after I initially wrote, I made a discovery. If I had waited until September, I could have saved some money and a whole lot of time and no confusion.

Hello Barbara,
This email is in response to your request regarding probate records for your great-grandfather.  I have found the probate record on microfilm.  There is a $4.00 fee for the search and copies are $1.00 per page.  Are you looking for anything specific to be copied?  For such an old case, there are a lot of documents on microfilm.
When I've determined the total cost due, I'll email you an invoice.  Upon payment of the invoice, I will email the copies to you.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Barbara,
Things haven't slowed down here in the record center.  After I got off of the phone with you the other day, I realized that I had already copied some of the documents from the microfilm.  I want to go back to the film to see what more was on there, but since I'm out of the office starting tomorrow until 4-6...what I'm going to do is send you what I've already copied...it's attached to this email.  Take a look at it and when I get back, we can touch base and see if you need anything further and determine the cost.

Hi Karen,
It's now Friday evening, and I want to thank you for going over and above in getting the documents to me so I can see them. A brief count shows 14 (but 2 are repeats), I need to do it again when I'm not rushed.
Yes, we will touch base when you return. I am pleased and they provided a few clues.
When you get the chance, I'm here. Enjoy your week, and Happy Easter as well.

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for your patience.  I do sometimes make duplicate copies, just to make sure if you can't read something on one of the copies, you will be able to on another.  Of course, you'll only be charged one copy fee.
I've attached a copy of the court docket entries to this email to help you determine what additional documents you would like copied.  I don't know why I didn't think of doing that before I went on vacation...but there it is.
I did also take a quick look at the microfilm again...most of the documents are 1 or 2 pages long...just a reminder that our copy fee is $1.00 per page and there will be a $4.00 search fee as well.
I'll wait to hear back from you which additional documents you would like copied.  I did notice if I blow up the size of the page, it's a little easier to read.

Karen,
I see you wear many hats on your job! I'm glad you aren't spending all your time looking at film.
I think we can end this project, the last document you sent didn't seem to have much that I needed, so I'll pass on that. From my count, there are 12 pages. I do have a few questions:
Could you tell me the title of the film and 1st-page number? (I'd like the source.)
My pages are the electronic ones or do you send hard copies?
Lastly, my bill is? (12 + 4, or is it more because you mentioned that some pages were longer.)
Sincerely,
Barbara Poole

Barbara, your comments are funny, as my first job with Dane County Clerk of Courts some 30 years ago was preparing files to be microfilmed and then checking the films once they were developed to make sure everything was legible.  I do have much more variety now : )
This case is on Dane County Circuit Court Probate Film 171-A-98 and is the first case on Index #4 which is Box 268.
I'm coming up with 11 pages for the number of copies...the last page is just one of those covers that used to get filed with documents indicating what was being filed...so I won't charge you for that.  I have attached our invoice to this email for the search and copy fees.  Payment instructions are on the invoice.  If you choose to mail a check please enclose a copy of the invoice with it.  I just saved the documents from the microfilm right to a PDF, so I didn't print out any hard copies.
I'm glad you were able to get some useful information from these records.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Dear Karen,
I must share this with you. Back in April, I requested a will of George Anderson's, and you provided it. Since there were a lot of pages in his packet, it took some time, but you did it.
Just today, I discovered that Ancestry.com just released millions of wills and probate records to subscribers. (I think it is free for this weekend.) Anyway, I found my George Anderson...all pages are crystal clear and clean, all 101 pages! I thought you would be interested in this, and maybe get a chuckle.
Sincerely,
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
I do find this interesting...especially the fact that the copies were so clear.  I wonder where they obtained the copies...maybe they have better equipment to print from microfilm than we do.  Plus the fact that you got all of these additional documents for free is awesome!
This is information I'll pass on to other people requesting records from us...as I just had someone requesting some old probate records that were difficult to copy.
Thanks for taking the time to email me...I enjoy hearing "the rest of the story".
Take care and happy researching.

Below is what Ancestry dot com listed, and you can see it was a huge packet of legal papers, including the will.

I never got around to printing out the 101 pages or even reading it until this week. I used the below link as my source: From Ancestry.com (Sept. 2015). Unfortunately, six years later, the link doesn't take me to these records.

However, when I did the link today, to compare, it takes you right to the packet.

37,000 Flags for Memorial Day in Boston

In 2015  I heard about the flag display of these flays and knew I had to make a trip to the Boston Common to see all 37,000 flags. A moving sight, and I hope you get an idea from the pictures below.

Memorial Day isn't just another holiday.

This garden of 37,000 flags was planted in memory of every fallen Massachusetts service member from the Revolutionary War to the present. These flags will be on display through Memorial Day weekend for your observance and reflection. Please remember and honor the ultimate sacrifices of our local heroes.

For more information about the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, please visit www.massmilitaryheroes.org

Each flag represents a fallen service member; please respect the display.

Before the Tourist Sites Open, See Two Historic Sites in Concord During Covid-19

Before the Tourist Sites Open, See Two Historic Sites in Concord During Covid-19 is my title and before this is old news, I'm sharing now. Concord, Massachusetts had some beautiful spring days and I took advantage of seeing the sites, both of which I've seen many times. They were the Minute Man National Historical Park and the Louisa May Alcott Orchard House  There is very little writing, this post is for showing what these sites offered or not for visitors. Normally, the two places are packed with tourists, either by car, bike, or by bus. On April 24, 2021, I drove to the North Bridge Visitor Center (one of two) for information about Minuteman Park. On May 8, 2021, I stopped by the Louisa May Alcott house.

The parking lot was partially full, and you see the sign that greeted me. The beautiful Barrett House was closed to tourists. There was one guide there to answer questions. He told me they might open late in the summer and that I'd be happy because it had been renovated and looked beautiful. It seems as tho their problem was with staffing.

Side view of the Barrett House.

I walked the trail from the Barrett House to the lower parking and saw a few familiar sites.

From the upper-level parking lot on Liberty Street, you walk downhill on a path.

Photos from the lower level walkway from the Monument Street parking lot.

On another day I went to the Louisa May Alcott Orchard House which wasn't open. Although the sign from my last May visit said they would open June 30, 2020. I was the only one there until a father and adult daughter from Michigan showed up and were very unhappy that it was closed. The parking lot is very small and usually is packed with cars even though there is a larger lot nearby. I have been inside for tours several times, but they have never allowed photographs to be taken. The house is open year-round.

This photo was taken exactly a year later on May 8, 2021. I chatted with an employee who told me he thought it would open in August. In the past year, shrubs and bushes were added, and the walkway changed.

This is a collage of all the photos I took in 2020.

Other photos from previous years.

Additional parking is in the lot between the Alcott House and The Wayside Home, across the street.

Maybe This Report Will Help Me Solve My Brick Wall

My ancestor was either born in Canada, New York, or maybe Connecticut, I want to find out where.

If you use Roots Magic7, software for your genealogy database, maybe you discovered the search option called Find Everywhere. I recently came across it when I decided to see who I had living in the town of Derry, New Hampshire before I went to the library. I find it's always more interesting to me if I do have a connection when I write a library report (To date I've done 75 different library blog posts). Remember, the results of this report are based on what you have in your RootsMagic7 database.

When I did the simple report I discovered it listed names of People, Sources, and Places. There are other options you can add, but I just did the basics. The results told me that I have "SECCOMB, SIMMONS / Symmons. Lived detail: Boston, Mass. > abt. 1736 to Derryfield (Manchester), New Hampshire." I knew immediately this person was an ancestor because my All Cap is an indicator to me that this is my direct line. Unfortunately, it doesn't really say he was living in Derry (the area is now Manchester).  In the future, I will always print the appropriate report for every library or repository I visit, regardless if I have an ancestor there. How to do the report is simple, see below for instructions. The Derry library printout was four pages, the Niagara report was six pages. Then I discovered this is a useful tool, possibly to help solve a brick wall mystery for my third great-grandfather, Alexander Farmer.

Instructions: On the top tab of RootsWeb 7 go to Search, then click on the 3rd tab, it opens up as shown below. Type in what you want to find, then hit ok. An example of the first report follows.

My second example may be more valuable to me because there are some libraries or repositories I will never get to because of the distance. As shown below, I was interested in Niagara, New York.  Surprisingly, I had three surnames I wasn't aware that they lived there. The first three are of interest to me: Schramling, Farmer, Lay, Nellis, Stannard and Young. My "brick wall" is Alexander Farmer born 1814 in either Canada or New York. (His second child was born in Niagara, NY.) Alexander married Huldah Lay, and her father Daniel was from Connecticut now living in Niagara, NY. So with a wondering mind, I'm thinking maybe Alexander Farmer was also from Connecticut. Maybe the birthplaces of Canada or New York were wrong. This report, tells me what I have and a whole lot of what I'm missing (you figure that out on your own). The report provided the information below on my six direct ancestors. The red names are those I'm very interested in. I couldn't change the formatting.
