Wordless Wednesday -- Canadian Vacation From the Past

Copy of a pamphlet for the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. A Facebook friend posted some recent photos of his trip there and I mentioned staying there many years ago. The price for a room for two in one of the towers, overlooking the St. Lawrence Seaway was about $36. I remembered I had this old pamphlet and decided to post for my Wordless Wednesday. The little black box with the name in the front is a matchbook that I cut out. We took the trip in 1966 and also stayed in Montreal for a few days.

Massachussetts Vital Records Birth Record News

Michael Brophy just sent the following message to a local genealogy club, and probably to others, and I felt his information was interesting and helpful, especially for those doing research here.


I quickly wrote him to obtain permission to copy his message to my blog. He kindly gave approval. Michael's blogs are at Brophy Professional Genealogy and Heir Tracing and Brophy's Irish Genealogy Blog.


"While visiting the Massachusetts Vital Records Office in Boston yesterday, I discovered that the registry has now made birth records available online inside the registry for the first time. The years covered are 1953-1986 and do not include marriage or death records. There is not remote access at this time.


This service improvement should held researchers work more efficiently in the often crowded and under serviced research room. The new access to the records eliminates the limitation on viewing these records by waiting for a "call for slips" after obtaining a volume and page number from an index. The registry charges a step fee of nine dollars per hour to access vital records in the research room and has cut down on their research hours in recent years.


Secretary Nyberg of the Vital Records said that future plans for the project are to expand access. In a tour of the Vital Records Registry in 2009 by the New England Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, he said that the goal is to have the records viewable at town halls throughout the state."

In the Name of God Amen I Daniel Wright of Durham in the County of New Haven in the State of Connecticut being of sound Mind and Memory and calling to mind the Mortality of my Body Do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say Principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul into the Hand of God and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian Burial at the Direction of my Executor nothing Doubting? but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty Power of God And touching with wordly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life. Tulips -- Ottawa Tulip Festival, Ottawa, Canada

In May, the annual Tulip Festival is held in Ottawa, Canada. We were there for two nights. Perfect weather, friendly people and good food. Tulips were at peak, everything was lovely. Sightseeing photos were taken of the area as well as plenty of tulips.

Genealogy Research Trip Thanks to Flowers in Canada

Would I survive a four-day get-a-way with a non-genealogy friend? The answer was yes, because I found every way possible to look for family clues on our 400 mile round-trip to Canada to attend the Ottawa/Canadian Tulip Festival (the largest tulip festival in the world, my photos). My childhood friend really wanted to go, and I let her plan it! (I always do the planning when my husband and I go anywhere.) I soon discovered I was able to trace the paths of several ancestors, it couldn't be better than that.


Through New Hampshire and north into Vermont, I followed my ancestors trails by passing through the towns where:
Daniel Lay, born in Connecticut, lived in Georgia, Vermont (died at sea).
Jonathan Knap and wife both of Connecticut went to Canada.
Moses Westover from Massachusetts probably traveled the same way.
My Jaquays family came from Rhode Island or Connecticut, and family members were buried in Ferrisburg, VT (near where we were).

It has been a very long time since I crossed the Canadian border at Saint-Armand / Philipsburg, and was delighted that I could take a photo of the sign. I have mentioned the town many times in my posts, and have a number of ancestors who settled there, while others migrated further east in this Quebec area. There was no time to sightsee again, but it was nice to be in the town where several lived.

As we traveled north then west, the farm land was very flat, and most plots were ready for planting, once the soil dried. Near Montreal, I thought of another ancestor, James Pell, who lived there, and had a son born in Montreal.

After our sightseeing and fun in Ottawa, we returned through Cornwell, Ontario and followed the most northern route in New York. Passing through Chazy and Champlain, New York and Alburg, Vermont, I saw the towns where other direct line ancestors lived at one time,  (Currie and Westover). More than likely, my Hauver, Ten Eyck, Rosenberger and allied lines traveled this way from the Albany area, either by land or via Lake Champlain.

Currently, Lake Champlain is having it's worst flooding in over 100 years, it was a very scary ride, although the roads were passable. Huge rocks had been placed on both sides of the roads, so we had to be careful. Then, I saw the neatest sign and asked my friend to pull over. I ran over to the sign to take the below photo.

A google search on my blog for Missisquoi (as in county) shows 32 hits. But I had no idea what the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in Vermont was all about. A Wikipedia article and some photos provide information.

Although I didn't look for cemeteries or search for vital records, I got the feel of the land in this northern area of the United States, and southern Canada. A good trip with two great purposes.
