Pages

The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.

Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.

Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

A Sad Farewell

Today was an unhappy day; it began with my knowing I was going to go to a wake. Not just any wake, but to one of a former genealogy club member, somebody I've know about 12 years. Our genealogy club has about 70 members, of which usually 15 people show up, and more often than not, the same people attend. Our club is pretty unique in that we have five husband and wives, a mother with two daughters and a mother with a daughter and son-in-law. Most of the regulars have been attending as long as my husband and I.

The other day when I was notified that one of the long-time members died suddenly at 59, it was a shock to us all. As written in her obituary, her passion was genealogy and she was a proud member of the genealogy club. How could you not cry? Her love of genealogy was like all of ours. Her mother also did it, and her husband seemed to be interested in it as well. This afternoon, I asked her husband about it, and I think he might try to do it, since my friend was also working on his lineage. We all hate going to a wake alone, but I did, and met two of the couples there, as well as one of the other members. We all knew each other and it was comforting. More members were going this evening.

I think too, my friend would be pleased with the number of her genealogy friends who showed up. We will all miss her.

Madness Monday -- Asking For Help#1

An update to my question regarding converting a PDF to a Jpeg brought many responses and many different methods.  See post of March 1.

I just called Smart Computing magazine's technical support office and presented my question to them. As a subscriber, the support is one of their benefits.  I was told there wasn't a way, other than getting an application downloaded to your PC.  Some applications may be free, free for a while or you pay immediately.

However, as I learned yesterday, a Mac will do it.  Kathryn Doyle at CaliforniaAncestors emailed, and had me send her my DAR certificate image to her, and within minutes I had the image back in a jpeg format!  Publically, I want to thank Kathryn.  In addition, Kathleen Brandt at a3genealogy had offered to do it for me as well.

I am thinking this might be an idea for the Monday posts.  And, I am hoping others have questions about blogging and technology.  Perhaps you could send me your question or questions, and I can post here.  I would love to hear your suggestions about this idea.

1914 DAR Certificate and FedEx

DAR Certificate of 1914 belonging to my great-grandmother.
I don't have many items that belonged to my great-grandmother but the three things I have pertain to the DAR.  She and her mother were both early members of the organization. Therefore, this document is quite meaningful to me. Some of you may remember my post about donating the 1901 certificate to the DAR, and they now can't locate it.

The other day, I went to FedEx armed with several items and many questions.  What joy to find there was no line, and I had the clerk all to myself.  We began with my five cemetery photos, 4 x 6 in color, which I wanted enlarged and put on heavy paper. That was done quickly.  Then from my flashdrive, the clerk found an image I had saved and printed it on heavy paper.  The last thing was to scan the above DAR document, which measures 14' x 17' and saved it on my flash drive. (There machine didn't do color, but a FedEx nearby does.) The machine used was amazing, as it can scan anything 36" wide and as long as you need.  I didn't need the image printed out, just saved..to show you.  In the future, I will have some descendant trees printed there.  Anyway, everything came to just under $6 and I was very pleased.

Once home, I tried out the flash drive.  The DAR certificate was there, but saved as a PDF, all I could get was the much smaller image (at 36% in size) to print out, which is what is above.  Yes, I can open the huge document, but of course, can't put it on the blog.  Seems like I experienced this problem before.

A quick phone call to FedEx and I was told, I could bring back the flash drive, and they can put the image into jpeg format.  Yes, I will do that. The employee was great, and really seemed to know his job and best of all, didn't mind all my questions. I learned, it is a good place to go to get information.

Based on the replies I received from a number of people who had suggestions to my Monday Madness  -- Asking For Help#1 post, there are several different ways to put a PDF onto your blog, but no easy way.  When I go back to FedEx next week, I will ask for their opinion.  Maybe there will be another way.

Surname Saturday -- KNAP Connecticut to Canada

The Knap line was one of the lines that I had a very easy time tracing their migration. Since I worked backwards and was initially stuck on the parents of Anna Knap, daughter of Jonathan. How was I ever going to locate Jonathan? He wasn't anywhere in the Quebec area where his daughter and husband were. During a cemetery hunt in Frelighsburg, Quebec, Canada to see where my Anna Knap Pell was buried, there were two large stones, those of her parents! Written on the tombstones were what we all love to see:

"Knap, Jonathan (Capt.) b. Redding, CT. May 17, 1750 - Apr. 25, 1828 h/o Mary Alvord" And, next to him was,

"In memory of Mary Alvord wife of Capt. Jonathan Knap who departed this life July 31, 1842. Aged 88-3-5." Perfect.

Once I returned home and made a trip to the library to get the Alvord Genealogy, it stated, "Mary Alvord (Elisha, Thomas, Thomas, Alexander), born Fairfield, Conn., Apr. 26, 1754; died in her 89th year; married Fairfield, Conn., Sept. 7, 1772, Jonathan Knap, son of David and Anna (Mallory) Knap. Res. Redding, Conn." A few additional sources tied the Connecticut line to the Quebec line rather easily. He was a loyalist who left Connecticut and went to Canada. But, it was all by accident that I even looked at those stones.

The five generations are below, and my direct lines are in All Caps. The first four generations are all documented in History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield by Donald Lines Jacobus, several other books, a will and early census. The fifth generation has my Jonathan Knap born in Fairfield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut and died in Quebec, Canada.

Genealogy Reviews from Two Magazines

The two current (for March) magazines shown above have articles that might be of interest to some readers. As a lover of magazines, I often find bits of information pertaining to genealogy in them. Last night I found two.

It is without pleasure that the Entertainment Weekly magazine gave a review of “Who Do You Think You Are?” The write-up wasn't very good, but the rating of a D was pretty low. Considering this magazine is popular with TV viewers, it didn’t send a positive message to them, nor entice them to watch.

Smart Computing has an article, "Find it Online, Root out Your Family History." The magazine has always covered new genealogy products, so this wasn't a surprise. Covered are reviews of six genealogy sites, Dick Eastman's newsletter and Family Tree Builder.

Monday Madness -- Asking for Help#1

I have so many difficulties when it comes to computer related issues.  Nothing has been easy.  The computer is ok, it is doing the little fun things pertaining to blogs.  For example, it took an hour to try to get the March birthdays report posted, but it still isn't right.  I did it with a version of FTM and then RM4. After all that time, I've decided to beg for help.  This isn't my first attempt with the below project, I tried it last month too.  The report is now saved in pdf format on the desktop and in my documents folder.  But there was no way to get it on to the blog.

So, what you are seeing is a printed copy which I scanned.  There must be an easier way.

I am hoping somebody takes pity on a much older person, and offers help.  I hate to warn you, but if I get help, I may use this tactic again in the future!  Like really soon.  I've already made a new label for Instructions.
In the past, one person offered help without me asking.  So I would like to publically  thank Apple.  There are others that I asked; they are Dru, Gini and Cheryl.  Last thing, I plan on doing this report every month, and possibly for deaths...you will be so tired of seeing it.  Thank you for any help.

Looking Back

Valentine's Day came and went, as did the figure skating at the Olympics, and soon life will be back to normal.  Genealogy research, blogging, and trying hard to have a more rounded life are in store. A few things I wanted to share are below.  And I will begin with a quick tour of the Missisquoi Museum and Historical Society in Stanbridge East, Quebec, Canada. I have mentioned this Historical Society in my My Favorite Historical Society is on a Stamp blog.  P.S. It is also on a post card, which I will show another time.

It was a big step for me to add something to the side on my blog.  When I asked Lindalee of Flipside if I could copy her image of the Dove of Peace, she said yes.  (Picture is at the left.)  But it was a week or more before I gathered the nerve to make a change to my home page.

While looking at blogs at a leisurely pace, I was quite surprised to see a post of mine in the Friday, December 18, 2009 issue of Shades of the Departed.  A very belated "Thank you" goes to Footnote Maven and the individual who submitted my article. My article was The Best Christmas Gift -- DAR and genealogy related, of course. Thank you again.  It always pays to read everything, even if you don't submit anything.

The day I posted my Tuesday Tombstone posting for two generations of Van Woerts buried in Oneonta, New York, I received a nice comment and email from a Van Woert cousin. Always very nice to make a connection like that.

Last month, I mentioned I was going to work on my photos, which meant scanning and copying to Find-A-Grave.  I started off with a bang, and then the Olympics came on. However, I managed to do over 100 scans and will try to finish up in March.

Once again, Randy Seaver and I are cousins, this time through our Gates line.  Update, found out yesterday, that we also shared the Sawtell line. And, Kathleen Brandt of a3genealogy was kind to do a Follow Friday, highlighting my above Gates article. Thank you Kathleen.

In closing, I have decided not to continue with my Looking Forward blog, mainly because I haven't given March any thought!

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- How would I spend $20,000 from Ancestry?

For Saturday, February 27, 2010, Randy Seaver's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun  pertains to the contest Ancestry.com is offering everybody to participate in.

Randy states, "Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1) If you won grand prize in the Ancestry.com Ultimate Family History Journey Sweepstakes of $20,000 for genealogy travel to places of your choice, where would you go?
2) Tell us of your dream genealogy trip using the prize money in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this post, or in a comment on Facebook."

My answer was pretty much formed the minute I entered the contest.

While the desire to return to England is somewhere in the back of my mind, I realistically think I would travel around the United States, and Quebec, Canada instead. The furthest I would go will be determined by any new information obtained through the consults. But, since my family has been in the United States before 1800, I would think it would be one of the states.

There is only one library, the Newberry Library in Chicago I really want to visit. Three generations of Pooles were from Evanston, Illinois, and I would love to see where my grandparents were buried. From Chicago, I would go via train to Salt Lake City for five days of research.

A trip to Washington, DC to revisit the roots of my great-grandparents, and do research at my old stomping grounds, the DAR library.

A 4 or 5 day trip around Connecticut, and a completely different trip for Massachusetts, both times staying at bed and breakfast inns and visiting cemeteries, the area, homesteads and seeing the land. In addition, a return mini trip to Quebec, Canada, with stops in Vermont and New Hampshire, visiting areas of my ancestors. During the entire trips, I would be praying for great weather. It is pretty easy to get carried away here, but I think I would also like to go to New Jersey and New York to trace my Ten Eyck line from New Amsterdam, to New Jersey to Albany, NY. That would also require several days at libraries in Albany and Cooperstown.

Depending on the restrictions for spending the 20,000, I would like to purchase a new computer during the trip and a camera as well. If Ancestry.com allows it, I would like to attend one or two genealogy conferences within the year. Not knowing how much time I have to spend the money, it is hard to say when or where I would go, and could my husband attend as well, since this is his hobby too.

A few donations will be made to my favorite Historical or Genealogical Societies, I might even become a lifetime member.

So, let’s see, budget wise, it would cost about:

The four mini-trips by car would be about $12,000.
The trip to the Chicago area and Salt Lake City, about $4,000.
The week in DC, about $2,000.
$2,500 for camera and Apple laptop. If these aren’t covered by the award, I would extend some of the trips for a few days longer. And eat well!

Well, if I am over my budget, I would do them all, and pay the difference out-of-pocket. And, share everything with the blogging community. No, maybe not, I wouldn’t want anybody to be jealous.
