For the past several months, my "Looking Back" post on the last day of the month, had a public thank you to those who decided I should be given an award. The current "Ancestor Approved Award" was given to me by 10 people. I am beyond shock, especially since I decided from the very beginning that I wouldn't accept them. It is just the way I am. I love each and every blog. If anybody would like this award, please be my guest.
However, I gladly want to show my appreciation here by naming the wonderful bloggers who thought my blog was worthy of receiving this award.

The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.
Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.
Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

Chatted with 2 people who met "WDYTYA" Celebrities
Today wasn't my normal type day at a library. Spent the time at the New England Historical and Genealogical Library (NEHGS) in Boston. I wanted to look up Vermont records for two genabloggers and records for me.
However, I was hoping to be able to ask somebody about Sarah Jessica Parker's visit to the Library for her segment filmed there. My friend said that Sarah greeted her and introduced herself, the impression was, Sarah was very nice and friendly. The filming was done during a normal work day, gee I wish I had known, I would have gone in...maybe.
The other person was Gary Boyd Roberts who was on this past Friday's TV show; he was at the New York Historical Society and showed Brooke Shields her tree. During our 20 minute chat, I found out that Brooke was on Broadway and that is why she didn't go to Boston for the filming. Gary mentioned how tall she was and then talked a lot about her tree and his nice treatment he received in New York, and he had no problem with going to the city. Gary gave me permission to post a page from his recent book with the genealogy of Brooke. See below.
I haven't been to this Library since January, and was surprised at the number of visitors. One was being shown how to use FamilySearch.org and there were three adults hovered around a computer looking things up on Ancestry. I was told that there were a lot of new members. The staff was very busy.
The look ups for Fenn and Bascom weren't successful. There were no Fenns in the Vermont Vital Records to 1890, there were a lot of Bascoms, but nothing that I thought was for the right family.

A Hint that May Solve Your Female Brick Wall
What madness we experience when we try to search for a female for whom we don't know her surname. In October 2009, I posted an excellent article Genealogy Tips for Finding Females That Matter to You (it wasn't written by me). The other day, my mind wandered to the day I solved a "brick wall" for Polly, surname unknown. In the past five years, I've only been able to solve two "brick walls" you all know it is a slow process. This one was solved quite unexpectedly, while I was sitting one Sunday afternoon at the New England Historical and Genealogical Library (NEHGS) in Boston.
I was working on my Kelsey line from Killingworth, Connecticut, and using a Kelsey genealogy I had used many times before. While flipping through the index, the surname DAVIS caught my eye. I already knew I had a lot of DAVIS in that town, but right there in alphabetical order, was "Kelsey, Polly born May 30, 1786; died before Dec. 11, 1833; married __ Davis." What, her last name was Kelsey, I couldn't believe it was right there in front of me. I wasn't even looking for her, I was just flipping pages looking for something else.
The other day, while working on the DAVIS line, I thought of a few hints to share. First, don't be afraid to work on a common surname, such as DAVIS, there are four generations of this family in Killingworth, my research turned out to be very easy because they never moved. You could be lucky too, so don't put off those names like Wright, Smith, and Miller. Do a genealogy custom report for the town your ancestor lived, just to see what the other names your database turns up. When I did it for Killingworth, I had 814 people born in that town (didn't bother with deaths). Many of the families have also been in the town for many generations. Three of my families have wonderful and well-sourced genealogies, they are:
1. Claypool, Edward and Azalea Clizbee, A Genealogy of the Descendants of William Kelsey, Vol. 2, (Pub. Tuttle, Morehouse and Taylor Co., 1928).
2. Barlow, Claude Willis, John Steevens of Guilford, Connecticut, (Rochester, NY: John M. Stephens, 1976).
3. Hull, Robert E., The Ancestors and Descendants of George Hull and Thamzen Mitchell, (Baltimore: Gateway Press, Inc., 1994).
Try to locate books for your particular area and check out the indexes. If I had looked in the index for Davis when I used the Kelsey book several years prior, I could have solved this "brick wall" much sooner. Last note, I know some people shy away from the index, but you really need to use all sources, especially if you are trying to solve a "brick wall."
I will be posting her tombstone photo on Tuesday, April 5, 2010.
What Luck Today, Thanks to a Follower
As I was about to look at recent posts of others, and hopefully make comments, my eyes glanced to my Followers list, and saw that it increased today. I have been very lax in looking at everybody's site, and to tell the truth, I am not sure if I follow everybody who follows me, something I hope to change.
My new follower has a great list of her ancestors, so I went directly to her Dutch names. And I almost passed out, when I was done looking at all her names. Betty Tartas of Betty's Boneyard Genealogy Blog and I share 13 ancestors! What a nice thing to find on a Saturday afternoon, while waiting for the Easter cake to bake. Surname Saturday -- FARMER (Canada or NY > Calhoun Co., Michigan)
The Farmer line is another "brick wall" of mine. Alexander Farmer and his wife, Huldah Lay were extremely difficult to trace. Forget about doing Google searches, with the surname of Farmer and Lay. However, over the years, I broke through the Lay line, and now I want to focus on the Farmer line. Alexander was either born in New York or Canada, based on census records or records of the children. My direct lines are in All Caps.

Looking Back
Brenda of Journey to the Past wrote about her five favorite libraries, and it was the last one that caught my eye. A quick email to her explaining the mysterious death of one of my ancestors I wrote about Suicide or Murder. John Newmark of Transylvanian Dutch had previously located a newspaper article from St. Louis, MO for me. Brenda was kind enough to locate three additional newspaper articles from Battle Creek, Michigan. Thank you both.
Jenna of Desperately Seeking Surnames selected my blog to be one of five that she chose to follow for the Five Weeks to Better Genealogy #9. She had to read my blog every day for five days!
One Saturday I wrote five Yale University students (emails obtained from the school) to see if any of them were interested in taking a photo of a bronze bust of my ancestor. Only one responded, and Carol informed me that the fee was $12 per hour, the fee set by the University. Well, since I knew where it was, I gave her directions, although it was pretty easy since it is located on the first floor of Sterling Library. She went on Monday morning, and within hours, I had five photos. At least I know what it looks like and am really glad I didn't make the long trip just to take it. UPDATE: Nice article about the Sterling Library (02/06/18.) https://news.yale.edu/2018/02/
A genealogy friend, Wes, and I corresponded quite a bit in the fall before I began my blog. Recently he found me via the blog, which I thought was pretty nice. He informed me that one of our ancestors, John Holmes has a DAR Chapter named after him and it is located in Minnesota. John Holmes was my 6th great-grandfather.
Hummer of Branching Out Through the Years, informed me that we share the same ancestors: James Fitch and Priscilla Mason. And, Wendy of New England Genealogy shares the direct oldest line to my Jonathan Poole.
At long last, my header photo is done correctly. Since the very beginning, I haven't been able to insert the photo correctly. Thanks to Apple of Apple's Tree, she resized it for me, and this isn't the first time she has helped me.
Greta of Greta's Genealogy Bog mentioned in her Follow Friday for March 26th, my piece in “Sentimental Sunday – My First Job.” Thank you, Greta. Follow-up, if you go to Greta's blog, she also wrote about her first job.
Bits of News
In USA Today, the daily newspaper, carries the Prime-time Nielsen ratings for television shows on Wednesday for the previous week. The show "Who Do You Think You Are" had 6.2 million viewers and ranked at #46. The show dropped a million viewers from the previous week.
Madonna and Ellen DeGeneres are 11th cousins, so says USA Today and Ancestry. Common ancestor, Martin Aucoin. Update, I saw The Ellen Show this morning and she mentioned other well-known people she is related to. And tried to pronounce the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, also stated they had already done her genealogy.
