The Life From The Roots blog topics have changed several times since I began this blog in 2009. I initially wrote only about the family history I had been working on for 20 years. Years later, I was into visiting gardens, historical homes, churches, libraries that had genealogical collections, historical societies, war memorials, and travel/tourism places. I also enjoy posting autographs and photos of famous people I've met or have seen.
Along with my New England roots, other areas include New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.
Please check out the labels on the right side for topics (please note, they need work). Below the labels and pageviews is a listing of my top nine posts, according to Google. Four of them pertain to Lowell, MA. These posts change often because they are based on what people are reading.

The Life of a Girl Scout in Alameda, California and Lexington, Massachusetts
My mother wrote on the back, Barbie Brownie
October 17, 1950
Alameda, California
Years later I'm working on a scout project in Lexington, Massachusetts.
Both of my Scout leaders loved to camp, so my Lexington, MA troop camped often. The above was at my leader's summer home in Rowe, MA (taken in April 1959).
Names on the backs of my photos above: Mrs. Marthe Osborne, Marsha Cameron, Mary Bea Lingane, Jane Connell, Judy Anthony, Ellen Fitzgerald, Nancy Collins, and Sally Warren.
The below photo was taken at a Girl Scout round-up in New Hampshire (Aug. 1960).

The below photo was taken at a Girl Scout round-up in New Hampshire (Aug. 1960).
I have no memory of my Brownie days, except I received a pin. When I moved from California to Massachusetts, I was in the Lexington Scout group for about 7 years and had the best Scout leaders, only two of whom I remember their names, a Mrs. Anthony and the other (shown above with the cap) was Marthe Osborne. In the early days, we worked on badges, all the normal things each scout did. I especially enjoyed learning to cook Spanish rice and penuche. Our big trip was to New York City, and although I had already been there, this was extra fun because I was with friends and not my parents.
Our troop sold cookies every year, the first price I remember was $.35 a box. My neighbors bought boxes and boxes. The other annual thing we did was to march in the Patriot's Day Parade every April 19th in Lexington. Although it was a two-mile walk, I loved being waved at. Those two things are such nice memories.
Recently (August 2017) I returned to Lexington and drove around my old neighborhood. Here is the house where one of my leaders lived, and where we had many meetings. Thank you, troop leader, Mrs. Anthony.
I continued on in Scouting when I moved to Chelmsford, MA going into my Senior year, and do remember my mother forcing me to wear my uniform to Church one Sunday. During several summers in Lexington, I went to a day camp, Camp Cedar Hill in Waltham, MA to help my mother who was a leader there. Prior to that, I went to two different Girl Scout summer camps, one was Camp Four Winds in Plymouth, MA., and Camp Helen Storrow also in that area, each was a two-week camp. Before these overnight Scout camps, I went to a day camp in Concord, called Camp Hart located at Walden Pond. My boating and swimming lessons were in Walden Pond!
All my experiences with Scout camping helped me get my first job. I clearly remember acting as an "adult" when I went to their headquarters on Joy Street in Boston and applied for a counselor position at Camp Runels in Pelham, New Hampshire for the summer of 1962. I got the job and worked there for 9 weeks for a salary of $400. Nice memories there, met a lot of friends and I grew up a little that summer. Also, remember being on the dock with my transistor radio hearing that Marilyn Monroe had died.
Almost 60 years after working at Camp Runels, I drove through the entrance and took a few photos. Sharing these brought back good memories.
Route 38 in Pelham is on the right.
I took this on the way out and didn't realize I was on private property until I was almost to the lake, then I turned back.
In front and behind my car. It was a beautiful cool morning.
Update of information: Recently, I discovered several entries in my baby book and am sharing them here.
1. Brownies at age 7-Installation and Troop 120 meeting on Mon. P.M.'s. (Alameda, California)
2. New Brownie troop - 20 at Mrs. Hamacher's. (Lexington, MA, 1954) Anybody remember her daughter Susan?

Happy Birthday, Ansel Adams
Two things, I told him where to stand and I only took one photo (35mm camera that I had to focus.
The book I had with me was bought at a Yosemite Falls gift shop in May 1978, and I just now looked at it again. Ansel wrote the date 9-9-79 with his name. Perfect documentation. The Sunday was a little cloudy at a little after 4. I don't think I'll ever forget a thing about that afternoon. He passed away five years later.

Lee Harvey Oswald's Wife and my Uncle, a Connection
![]() |
| My aunt, uncle and mother |
I'll share what I was told by somebody, who, I don't know. Either my mother, aunt, or even the doctor/uncle. He was Marina Oswald's doctor, she being the wife of Lee Harvey Oswald who shot President John F. Kennedy. I don't remember my reaction upon hearing this, nor do I remember when, maybe the 60s, 70s, or 80s...I just don't know. Over the years, I forgot about it and even wondered if it was a dream because I forgot so much.
During this time of google searching, my uncle's name came up several times in a document, Oswald, Marina Protective Custody of Sec. Service, Records of the John F. Kennedy Assassination Collection: Key Persons Files. I wasn't totally surprised but was glad there was proof that the old story was true. Once I found his name, I skimmed through the 80-page document and thought I'd just share a few lines from it. When Marina was protected by the Secret Service, everything was documented and may be read in the released document by the NARA seen HERE. My uncle's name is on the page dated January 10, 1964 (page 37 on the tab), and since many of you probably know the surname, you will see it (I'm trying to protect his name from the internet), or just look for the word doctor. Also, reading the historical document might be of interest to you. Perhaps my uncle was her doctor for many years, maybe her husband's? children's? or just Marina's for those months after the assassination, I'll never know. But, in a little over two months, she saw him at least twice. In addition to her hour-by-hour schedule during these months, Marina answers many questions regarding her husband, before November 22, 1963, most things I never knew about, a lot about his rifle. https://www.archives.gov/research/jfk/finding-aids/jfk-key-persons
From the pdf document, I'll share the below:
Protection of the Oswald Family
"In the early afternoon of November 24, 1963, while at the Parkland Hospital, after the death of Lee Harvey Oswald, I received a telephone call from Headquarters stating that the President had issued orders that the entire Oswald family should be protected to prevent any harm befalling the mother, brother, widow, or children of Lee Harvey Oswald.
At the time the Oswald family was at the hospital retrieving the remains of Oswald and were discussing funeral arrangements, and receiving spiritual consolation from the chaplain at the hospital. They had been brought to the hospital by Special Agents Howard and Kunkel who previously had arranged to interview the Oswalds with the assistance of Mr. Peter Paul Gregory. I instructed SA Howard and Kunkel to accompany Oswald to safe destinations when their visit to the hospital had been completed and to continue their attempts to interview each of them. They indicated to me that they had made prior arrangements at a motel."
Feb. 7, 1964: the Protective Detail assigned to Mrs. Marina. Oswald was discontinued at the Willard Hotel.

Seccomb of Massachusestts and New Hampshire -- Surname Saturday
| A Bridge to the Past |
Because of recent snow storms and being housebound, I've been going back to various tree lines, including this one, and I was surprised with how much new information I found. It was like Christmas. There were many New Hampshire documents online and so many of my unknowns were solved by looking at the images and the wonderful FindAGrave. If you read through, you'll see the town of Amherst, NH mentioned a lot, and in the future, I'll be going there for cemetery photos (most already online, so the search should be easy).
If you have this family, you already know there are many spellings other Seccomb. A side note, if you select "Restrict to Exact" on Ancestry.com, that is what you get. Fortunately, I checked Soundex and Phonetic matches as well. New spellings for this family were: Sacomb, Seacomb. Seacombe, Seccoinbe, Secomb, Secombe, Siccombe.
My direct lines are in All Caps. Feel free to write if you have any questions or anything to add.
